Again, absolutely. Go look at or pick up an iPhone 6, it's actually unbelievable how thin it is.

Yeah but isn't that the one that infamously bends? And didn't they move away from that design because people liked flat edges better and didn't mind 1mm more thickness?

Do you just purposely ignore the fact that weight is mostly tied to thickness? The 16 Pros are too heavy so there's a market for this. Also, you have no idea how much more impressive this so called iPhone 17 Air could look like compared to the rest, just because of that - difference in thickness

Is it?

15 Pro - 187g, 8.25mm
16 Pro - 199g, 8.25mm

I really have no idea what the extra 12g gained with the 16 Pro.

3 sizes 2 of which nobody buys, sure .

There aren't tons of people who want a smaller phone, Apple has the actual numbers which were so bad that they killed the 13 mini a year before the regular size 13 (while for example keeping the 14 plus in the linup alongside the regular 14).

Which two are the ones nobody is buying? Seems like just the Mini was the odd phone out. People buy plenty of medum and large, standard and Pro. Even in this thread, the people saying they want it thinner elaborate to say that what they actually want is for it to be lighter. Everyone who says the thinner phone sounds like a good idea is describing the iPhone Mini.

There is already a larger, lighter phone in the Plus. The phone in the article sounds like the Plus, but 1mm thinner.

The more I think about it, the less this seems like a new thing.

I’d prefer they just even out the back to get rid of the camera bump.
Would you please think about that for a second?

Here are your options if you want a flush camera island:
- make the iPhone thick enough = much thicker and heavier device
- make the camera island thinker = big reduction in camera quality

I don't think you realise those are 2 terrible options. So what Apple does by having a great camera that sticks out is by far the best option.

- make the camera island [thinner] = big reduction in camera quality

this is not a terrible option but rather my dream

I want a phone/communicator/iPod/nearly everything else it does

no need for a camera

there are plenty of quality stand alone cameras available for wannabe photographers

Yeah but the 6S is just as thin and didn't have any issues. And not sure they moved to flat sides because people liked it better, more like they moved to flat sides because they wanted a design refresh and people like that lol. But I don't see any reason why Apple couldn't make a phone as thin as the 6S with flat sides (and sounds like that's exactly what they're doing).

Really that big? I don't think today's HUGE BUMP size is an ACTUAL need. It could be significantly reduced without any real difference. These oversized bumps are just for a marketing purposes (bigger = better), which, to be fair, started Android phones. Apple simply doesn't want to be "left behind".

I'm thinking that Apple is using flat sides on iPhone and iPads because it's somehow easier and more cost effective to produce. On iPhones, squeezing the flat sides is not that uncomfortable, but I don't like the sharp edges on my 11" iPad.

According to https://www.macrumors.com/2024/11/21/best-selling-iphone-model-sizes-revealed, the most popular iPhone is the regular/base followed by the Pro Max, Pro, and then Plus

How does the SE phone fall within those rankings?

Does Apple offer a Fold, Flip? Who is making the display panels on iPhone? Hmmm
They do not. And that kinda reinforces my point, Apple isn’t making a foldable just because other companies are doing it. I know there’s been a rumor or two about it, I’m unconvinced. I mean if you take those rumors seriously, Apple was supposed to release a foldable as early as 2020.

And to answer your second question, BOE, LG, and Samsung manufacture the Apple-designed display panels.

I do think it's too thick, but at the camera bump. I hate, hate, hate, the massive camera lens bulge. I'd be happy if they even went back to 11 and 12 camera bump dimensions.

As for Pro models weight, it went down on the 15, then right back up on the 16..so they solved it, then unsolved it:

13 Pro - 204g
14 Pro - 206g
15 Pro - 187g
16 Pro - 199g

I never liked the weight of my 13 Pro. It wasn't that it's too heavy, I just didn't like it. I equally don't like the weight of my 16 Pro, and even though I didn't pay for it (my employer did), I regret picking it over the lighter base model 16 at 170g.
I think this illustrates, that it would make more sense to market this new iPhones “Air” as the lightest weight iPhone instead of the thinnest.

It would be cool if it’s supported the Apple Pencil

I would prefer many things over thinner. No island/notch, flush cameras on back so no table wobble, tandem OLED display, better battery life, TouchID or under display FaceID, physical mute button, eliminate camera control button or move it to a natural placement and make it work for whatever I want, open up ability to install any App I want from any store (I bought it and should be able to do whatever the heck I want with it - like EU), stop anticompetitive practices to ensure iPhone has open interoperability, don’t lock to carriers, and the list goes on.

The thinner :apple: can make it the more desirable it will be; let’s go 5 mm \o/ However, I would say iPhone Air should not compromise on sound and microphones. A good selfie camera wouldn’t hurt.

Any news about iPhone Ultra?

Whatever takes their mind away from thinking about commenting on every article on MR telling us how much they want the Mini back is fine with me.
Perhaps what happened to the iPhone mini is actually stirring your own pain about what happened to the 27" iMac. In your own special way, you're one of us. Hugs
