The whole camera module is buzzing while it is in operation, which is audible in recordings. It's like static, even though the room is silent. Doesn't occur on any other devices I have access to.

I've got a 17Pro 1TB that exhibits the clicking (which I'm not really worried about), and also the "white noise"/static hiss from the back cameras (which I think is likely the image stabilization).

I tested my unit by going to the quietest part of my flat, and I initially thought I could hear the static noise in videos, but comparing it to an iPad mini that I hear nothing from... it's basically the same sound interference level. Maybe a little more "crackle" on the iPhone 17 Pro.

I don't know what to make of this yet.

I'll attach the two videos.

Same on my 17pm. Hiss from the back when using rear camera.
Sometimes an audible click when using Face ID. Both are likely to be image stabilisation stuff.

In fact, my iPhone 15 pro Max also makes the hissing noise if you listen up close to the rear of the Phone. Although the 17 is louder. I can’t test Face ID because I haven’t sent up on that phone.

All in all, I would say it’s normal unless you have an exceptionally loud unit.
When it comes to video recording, I do get background hiss in a silent room but I don’t think it’s anything different to normal.

What I found interesting is that if you go to record a video and switch it between 60 FPS and 120 FPS you will notice that the 120 is quieter than the 60.

I have the same issue with my new 17 Pro Max.

Quick online search gave me this:
"A "pop" or "click" sound when your iPhone 17 Pro Max uses Face ID is normal, caused by the Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) system engaging to stabilize the camera sensor. If the sound is accompanied by Face ID not working or performance issues, it could indicate a hardware problem. "

Also, this from another forum post - someone who spoke to Apple:
  1. He told me that this sound is normal, since the mechanism is mechanical and that it is basically due to the OIS lens (they ran a test on the phone and everything worked fine and it didn't give any errors).
  2. Another thing I've been told is to try shaking the phone with the camera closed. If you hear a slight rattle, it's completely normal; it's the sensor moving freely within the module. However, if you open the camera and then shake the phone, that rattle should disappear or lessen. The reason is that, when you activate the camera, the OIS system kicks in, and the mechanism locks the sensor to keep it stabilized. This locking is precisely what produces the slight "click" you hear when you open the camera.
This all kinda makes sense to me........

I’m hearing the static noise from the camera module. (No clicking sounds though)

When I take a video, that static noise is really audible when played back.

Hopefully this gets fixed with a software update.

17 Pro here. I noticed this morning that my camera is clicking when I first turn it on. It is a mechanical type sound that lasts just a second and sound like the camera moving. I also noticed that if I put my ear to the camera, it makes a slight hissing noise. At first I thought it was coming from the speaker but it is from the camera housing.

So is it correct that the sound when first turning on the camera is normal and that the hissing is not normal but is common?

I have two days left to decide what to do with this phone. If it is defective, I'm going to want to return it to the Apple Store this weekend.

Quiet hissing is okay. That’s normal noise when stabilization is working.

Is this what the front camera noise sounds like for others when FaceID is started but doesn't actually unlock?
Ie, if you put the FaceID camera right up to your ear (cos it's inaudible at any distance beyond that) and wake the screen, is this what you hear?

(I've boosted it by +36dB, incidentally – it really is very quiet IRL.)

listened to my rear camera and can confirm it also makes the very very faint hissing sound. It’s probably the ois doing its thing. It doesn’t bother me but I thought I’d report in.

No. It's a single click, almost like an electrical popping sound, but singular.

Even when you hold the front camera right up to your ear with the screen off, then turn the screen on using the power button, so that Face ID doesn’t actually unlock the phone?

Actually the post refers to a click sound when Face ID is triggered, that I have. But what you registered is also audible on my phone if I put my ear to the front speaker when unlocking my phone.
