If they go back to aluminum, maybe we get red phones again? I will need to upgrade from an iPhone XR at some point. While I couldn't care less about the whole Apple Intelligence idiocy, the increased amount of RAM should allow the phone to work better for longer into the future. Main limitation on my XR seems to be RAM.

Will the main 1x camera sensor be better for once? They have been using the same one since iPhone 14 Pro while superior sensors have existed for years.
Exactly, it is the main upgrade I check for too. Last year's 16PM was rumored to get a newer camera module for the main rear camera which would have had a slightly larger sensor to improve image quality particularly in low light, but when that never happened it was explained the module wasn't available at the time production began. It is definitely available now so there's no excuse other than skimping for profit. I wonder if the wide angle camera also has a newer camera module available too but won't be included this year for the same reason. Also the focus seemed to have been on the configuration of the rear lenses and whether or not it will cause it to rock on a table, if that is a major issue for people just buy a case.

Come on! Seriously? TEN NEW FEATURES? These are NOT features.
  • Aluminum frame: Titanium/Ceramic/Aluminum ... next model Tungsten.
  • Rectangular camera bump: Cameras are in the same place!
  • More scratch-resistant display: This is Super Duper Gorilla glass.
  • Larger battery: This battery is bigger than the last. I BET the next battery will be bigger than this.
  • A19 Pro chip: I'm going to guess next years phone will have a new feature too ... the A20 chip.
  • Apple-designed Wi-Fi 7 chip: NEW FEATURE.
  • 24-megapixel front camera: Why do you need this?
  • 48-megapixel rear Telephoto camera: Next year the camera will be a 62-megapixel camera.
  • 12GB of RAM: More RAM. Wow!
  • Improved cooling: Ooooookay. To solve its own design flaw issue.
I WISH, HOPE, and PRAY Apple would INNOVATE again, not just give us a new haircut. In Australia we have a saying 'Same **** different smell'. These are NOT new features, and it's sad that this is the current benchmark we have now set for ourselves to be 'wow'ed by Apple. I'm losing the faith ... fast.

Some of this is basically "oh crap we needed more RAM than we thought for Apple Intelligence".

There is no point in buying this at all with the uncertainty around.

Sure, but there seem to be rumblings that maybe even 8GB might not be enough to run Apple Intelligence properly, or at least at the speeds that Apple originally thought they'd accomplish with 8GB. It'll still run on iPhones with 8GB, but maybe not at "premium speed".
I can’t see them upping the 17’s to 12gb just yet because if they do that then how are they going to upsell most of their customers down the line.
Because if they up the ram on the 17’s to 12gb then going forward you will be less incentivized to upgrade down the road if future phones have only 12gb of ram in them & from a business point of view it makes no sense to up the ram after just 2 years
They have got to hold something back for the 18’s

If Apple wants to make a comeback from this whole AI bust, they better go live with WWDC in June 2025 and bring the noise. Otherwise, the next lineup is going to be a flop. That's all I'm going to say.

The Pro Max will be thicker again? Jeez. Just stick with one size and shape for a few years, Apple. Anyone notice how every year, the phones are just a little thicker/slimmer, longer/wider? I am convinced this is all just smoke and mirrors to sell new cases.

Keep the same design for 3 years. Then change it. And keep it the same for another 3 years. It's called a long term product roadmap but not sure if Apple follows one anymore.

Absolutely hideous design. Probably not accurate and released as ragebait by a lot of influencers.

I am more inclined to believe the previous supply chain leaks out of china that show the elongated camera module.

Probably wishful thinking

Apple used to follow a tick tock schedule
By keeping the same design for 2 years
And have a brand new design

Ok I'm going to sound the alarm here.

1. Flip-Flopping between Aluminum and Titanium every 2 to 4 years is NOT a DAMN feature! Its a joke. The fact this is even mentioned leads me to believe Apple is paying or feels its spending TOO much for Titanium alloy in their phones and the profits per device is too low to pay Tim Cook if they come out of this upcoming class action lawsuit better than expected.

2. A Camera Bump shape is NOT A FEATURE! Its a SHAPE or Design. Unless it folds into stand or finger through holding devices it means NOTHING but an aesthetic design!

Like serious Macrumors needs to STOP being Apple's marketing sales division and get back to its roots. Peddling this and any user that things these 2 are features needs to get their heads split and checked out asap!

Is anyone else sick of these mediocre sales attempts?!

FYI bigger battery capacity is one thing but Silicon Carbon/Carbide battery is what you REALLY want! I feel that a slightly thicker body is not what you're gonna get from this battery technology but plain old Li-Ion polymer
Apple’s strategy works and they will not deviate from it. Small, incremental improvements. The won’t change it because you or anyone else says they should.

They won’t change it because people just accept it now.

It’s always been that way and it’s the way normal users (not us) like it. It’s a strategy that has them as the wealthiest business in the world. You can’t dispute it.

No the design was on a TikTok schedule with the same design for 2 years
Then Apple became lazy & introduced a little change here & there.
So when people actually get a proper change then they are delighted with it.

I doubt apple will actually stick to that render. Maybe the camera bar but no way will they keep the cameras in the frying pan shape. Especially if there is no use for anything in between. My guess is updated positioning of the cameras, possibly increasing size to take full advantage of the entire space. But then how would spatial capture work unless in portrait orientation...

At this point, just about every reliable rumor source has shown pretty solid evidence that the render in this article is how the camera bump and the location of its cameras will look. Apple might change the arrangement of the cameras at some point, but not with the iPhone 17, it seems. Maybe the 20.

"iPhone 17 Pro models are rumored to have an aluminum frame" Imagine people still defending Apple for going (back) to very, very inferior material. But hey, it's for the "<insert typical Apple made up reason>", and not for profit, right?

In México we still have daily ads which advertises the 16e as “Designed for Apple Intelligence”.

Interesting. I’ve never experienced 1 or 2 on any Android. 3, I can’t say I’m impressed so far, eg Bluecoins an app I’ve been using on Android for years isn’t as good on IOS. I use Revanced Reddit/Youtube etc and they blow iOS versions away. I use no social media other than Reddit, certainly not x or Facebook as I despise them.
4 - I’ve never really tried the Spotlight search, but have never had those problems on Android either.
5 - I’ve had no issues on my Samsung sideloading let alone with permissions. However I am far from a fan of Google and don’t use any of their services, gmail, maps, etc. I also don’t like the way they are going, but they are a feckin advertising company primarily. I also think Samsung are gone to hell, progressively removing features from their phones too even though they once mocked apple for this.
6 - I’ve always rooted myself and agree unlockable bootloaders and things like Knox blowing fuses are unacceptable, I wish the EU would step in here. As for Ai it’s a giant steaming turd and I have no use for it either.

My point is that Apple could easily make IOS so much better, but they choose not to. I’m trying it out in the hope it’s a viable alternative for me, but so far I’ve been very disappointed. Things like multi-window which I use all the time, eg when navigating, as well as downloading torrents (iso as well as other!) and using the file system to manage my nas (dual pane x-plore is amazing), simply can’t be done. iOS is nice in many ways but it is seriously limiting once I try to go out of just messaging, taking pics etc.
You're lucky that you haven't experienced 1 and 2. I don't know how you've missed them seeing how they've been constant complaints about Android for years but it's good that you didn't notice.

I don't like using hacked/modded apps. I pay for YouTube Premium and I just use the original Reddit app. Works fine.

As for the permissions for sideloaded apps, this link explains it all - https://www.androidauthority.com/android-15-restricted-settings-sideloading-3481098/

I do agree that they can do better, and I hope the iOS 19 is that better, but given all the issues I had with my recent Android devices (S23U, S24U, OnePlus 12, OnePlus 12R, OnePlus 13), I've been pretty surprised by this 16e. I mean I'm on the dev beta and even that is solid. Not a single freeze, not a single re-spring, not a single reboot, no missing notifications, and 2 days off the charger with 4-5 hours SoT a day. It hasn't even failed to stay connected to my Galaxy Watch despite the fact that I am using a third party app to connect it to both my OnePlus 13 and my 16e.

Thanks for your Android summary. Those things sound like they’d annoy me too. I only tried Android a long time ago with a Nexus 7, but have been fully in the iOS camp since the first iPhone (even buying it when it wasn’t available in my country).
Anyway, I wanted to say that you can swipe in iOS to switch back to the previous app. Swipe on the bar at the bottom of the screen to go back. You can switch back through all of the open apps this way and swipe the other way to go forward through the apps again too. Hopefully that helps.
You can swipe to switch apps on iOS. Just horizontally swipe the home bar at the bottom of the screen.
Yeah I know that gesture works but on Android I can swipe the edge of the phone to go back from my browser to the mail I was reading and that's a hard gesture to forget.
I've never experienced delayed or missing notifications on android while I have on iOS - in my experience android does notifications better by a landslide, it's not even close.

App quality between android and iOS is hit or miss, some are better on android and others better on iOS, also some apps that cost money on iOS can be found for free on android and there isn't always a difference in quality.

I give spotlight an edge up over android's search feature, but android's search isn't bad at all and android's App Library and management (being able to clear cache or data) is better

One thing you didn't touch on is swiping/navigating in system or apps - iOS is an absolute mess regarding this while android is very consistent requires much less effort and thought to navigate because it's so seemless.

and yeah apple's keyboard is so much worse lol
The notification issue has been a constant complaint about Android for years so I'm confused how so many people claim to have never experienced it. I've seen complaints about it from every brand since Android 12. It's caused by aggressive background app management by Doze and it's especially bad on OnePlus phones where the phone may just decide to close apps in the background even though you've told it not to. Seeing how the Pixel phones are underpowered, North American Samsung phones can't be rooted, and the update policies of the other manufacturers are awful, OnePlus is pretty much the only viable option for me to use Android anymore but it gets exhausting fighting with the OS all the time.

I have no doubt that there are apps that are better quality on Android, just none of the ones I use are.

I much prefer the organization of Apple's App Library honestly.

I did touch on the swiping/navigating and said that Apple needs to improve that. The only thing that really annoys me though is that I have to use the nav bar to swipe back when I open a link from an email. I got so used to swiping the side of the screen on Android that I'm struggling to unlearn that. I can navigate everything else just fine.
