I agree on most points, but aluminium is NOT a step back. Steel and Titanium were marketing ploys, but aluminium is a far better material for smartphones as it has a better thermal conductivity and lower density, so it makes the phone lighter. It was a bit silly that the pro phones had a worse material. Not as silly as having a pro line, but close enough.
Ever see a used Alu Apple Watch compared to a “worse material” SS or Ti version?

Gonna be real interesting to see the breakdown of the 17 Air vs the Pro models. The Air is going to have the sleekness factor, the Pro becoming the utilitarian line, much more similar to the laptop lines.

Just from the spec sheets, I'm currently leaning towards the Air. The pro seems like a general spec bump upgrade from the same thing we've been getting since the 11 Pro.

Why on gods green earth would we go back to aluminum that makes no sense

Starting to sound like a broken record here with that grotesque camera bump:
- The flash will cast shadows that don’t match the lens
- The mic can’t support audio mix
- The LiDAR has to be as close as possible to the lens so that they read info from the same POV
- The extra material for that long ass bar will cost Apple a lot
- Your fingers will naturally cover the lidar, flash and mic while you use it in landscape
- Titanium is already perfect and aluminum is a step back
- Two-tone materials just look bad and cost more
- There isn’t a single benefit to this design whatsoever (the lenses still protrude past the camera bump, so it will still rock on tables)
its not a real product. relax until September when its actually released.

Macrumors gets earlier, and earlier, every year proclaiming advanced knowledge in this way to such a degree that in March we are getting very confident articles 'this is the new iPhone'. Its a best guess at the most right now.

You don't know until September.

As per your technical worries about LIDAR and mics and flash........ im pretty sure Apple are the experts here don't panic.

Meh - that camera hump doesn't make any sense as long as the lenses still stick out. 24mp front camera is probably nice for selfies and 12gb ram for a "pro" phone is ok-ish. Apart from that, again no reason to buy that oversized, overweight and, most important of all, quite overpriced brick - if that's all, I'll stick with my 13 mini. Glad that Apple intelligence arrived stillborn.
I can’t see the iPhone 17 pros getting 12gb of ram
Considering the iPhone 12 Pro to 14 pro had 6gb ram so that’s 3 years before they upgraded the ram so I can’t see it this time

While the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max are not expected to launch until September, there are already plenty of rumors about the devices.

Wait until they start making iphone 18's out of polycarbonate, iphone 19's out of wood. iPhone 20? we have something special; only the finest grade ivory.

Only sure thing is that whatever they decide to make the next phone out of, they'll brainwash their buyers into believing that the material they use is the best one and whatever was promoted previously is now garbage.

It’s not just cost cutting, the weight was most likely a factor as well. The 16 Pro is close to 200g. A titanium 17 Pro prototype may have hit or come very close to the 206g weight of the heavy stainless steel 14 Pro.
Then why fix something that is not broken ... .15 PRO MAX. best iPhone so far.

Sure, but there seem to be rumblings that maybe even 8GB might not be enough to run Apple Intelligence properly, or at least at the speeds that Apple originally thought they'd accomplish with 8GB. It'll still run on iPhones with 8GB, but maybe not at "premium speed".

I see more and more negative associations of Apple in this forum. Do we fallen of our belief that Apple was supreme? I hope Apple will make better phones, not fancy phones for only use as FOMO. Please Apple listen to these reactions.

“Best” is relative and time-dependent.

I also currently use the 15 Pro Max (and only because the 15 Pro in Nat Ti was out of stock last August), an upgrade from my 12 Pro on an insane deal. And yes, it’s very functional and capable for my use needs. But the relationship I have with it is more along the lines of my (admittedly higher-end) domestic appliances, washer/dryer, fridge-freezer and the like. If I owned an EV (ugh) I’d imagine it to be the same as whenever I’ve driven one as a rental or courtesy. Emotionless competence.

In contrast, I absolutely LOVED my (white) iPhone 4 and sleek steel iPhone X. No surprise really since both of those models represented major hardware and design advances instead of the mealy-mouthed drip-feed incremental BS we’ve been subjected to now for 6 years.

I don’t see any new features in that list. It’s basically a little bump to existing features.

Aluminum dissipates heat better than titanium and is lighter

First they killed the mini size which is the core and the definition of a MOBILE device.
Now the camera bump is growing and is insanely disturbing.
Why can't we at least have a flat smartphone body, like the MacBook?
Impossible to put it on a table without wobbling :(

Same. Holding off till the next anniversary iPhone in 2027 to feel a substantial upgrade. The 13 Pro Max is still a beast even after so many years.

Come on! Seriously? TEN NEW FEATURES? These are NOT features.
  • Aluminum frame: Titanium/Ceramic/Aluminum ... next model Tungsten.
  • Rectangular camera bump: Cameras are in the same place!
  • More scratch-resistant display: This is Super Duper Gorilla glass.
  • Larger battery: This battery is bigger than the last. I BET the next battery will be bigger than this.
  • A19 Pro chip: I'm going to guess next years phone will have a new feature too ... the A20 chip.
  • Apple-designed Wi-Fi 7 chip: NEW FEATURE.
  • 24-megapixel front camera: Why do you need this?
  • 48-megapixel rear Telephoto camera: Next year the camera will be a 62-megapixel camera.
  • 12GB of RAM: More RAM. Wow!
  • Improved cooling: Ooooookay. To solve its own design flaw issue.
I WISH, HOPE, and PRAY Apple would INNOVATE again, not just give us a new haircut. In Australia we have a saying 'Same **** different smell'. These are NOT new features, and it's sad that this is the current benchmark we have now set for ourselves to be 'wow'ed by Apple. I'm losing the faith ... fast.

Soda cans aren't made of aircraft-grade aluminum alloys. Far from it.
Drinks cans are generally made from a 3000 series alloy, which sees common usage in various places in aircraft. There is no defined standard or requirements as “aircraft grade” or “aerospace grade” are just marketing terms, which seem to have worked on you seeing as you seem to have jumped to the conclusion that I was referring to the higher series number alloys used in more vital areas of aircraft.

If it’s used anywhere in an aircraft, you can boast it’s “aircraft grade”. A company could boast they use “aircraft grade steel” because they use metal from the factory that supplies Airbus with their seatbelt buckles.

There was only so long Apple could coast on Steve Jobs’ legacy. For years after his passing, you could still see the trace of his influence in Apple’s product direction. But at some point, the ideas he left behind were going to run out. And now, it feels like we’re watching that happen in real time.

There’s no longer a clear sense of vision. It’s safe, reactive, and sometimes contradictory. And that’s what happens when a company becomes too good at operations, and not good enough at original thinking.

Only reason I’m considering upgrading from my 15 Pro is I’m afraid T-Mobile will raise prices on their plan between the 17 and 18 and I’ll have to start using a more expensive monthly plan to get the “free” upgrade (well usually i think $850 or so off).

This will certainly be the best phone EVER created, but damn it’s boring. It’s all small, small spec bumps. The keynote (for awhile now) will be so boring. A new CHIP?!?!

A rectangular camera bump is a "feature"? Amazing

It does seem kind of silly to me that the only reason they are doing this rectangular cut out for the cameras is for the visual design. Maybe there a reason for it beyond that we aren’t thinking of?
