That's why I ordered both. I'll check them out tomorrow in store for my pick up and then go with the one I live better. I really like the blue but the orange is gaining on me too.
I’m an afternoon pick-up time, if you’re in the morning, please let me know your thoughts! I’m probably gonna try to snag a 1TB blue for in store pickup tomorrow AM and then cancel one when I’m there.

For me its the unibody design that has me sitting on the fence. The phone does not have to be a unibody design to take advantage of the vapor chamber. If they kept the squared off edges like the previous models then sure its a done deal. I know it's gonna be in a case but if I'm gonna spend $2K for a phone....
I think the unibody design aids in the heat distribution, so it works in combination with the vapour chamber. I agree though that the design they’ve gone with is ugly, and doesn’t give me Apple vibes.

Excuse my crude mockup, but I feel like they could have still had a unibody frame with a full glass back or done something along the lines of the iPhone 5, both of which would have looked better than this cutout design to my eyes.

Interesting... I don't mind the new design but I'm interested to see how they refine it mainly the rumored transparent back. I always get white/silver (15PM WT) so I'm not quite sold yet 🤔

I didn’t realize they’re still doing SIM cards in Australia.

What’s strange to me about the design is the off-center Apple logo with the two-tone design. It looks like there’s a battery pack attached to it.

I think the official cases actually center the Apple logo, no?

Edit: I wish it were in black.

Yeah it’s weird as the phone itself has a lower Apple logo but the case has the logo higher up.

How thin is the ESR case?

Not really thin. It’s like the Apple silicone case in terms of thickness

I have a different take on the design topic. I always shove my phone in the biggest, most bulky & rugged case I can find due to being a dairy farmer who happens to also be clumsy (guaranteed phones gonna fall in the gutter full of manure within a week) lol. The design doesn’t matter to me as long as the phone doesn’t lose its durability. My hubby gets my 2 yr old phone when I update so a design that can last 4 years is what’s important to us.

You need glass for magsafe wireless charging and aluminum for heat dissipation. The actual design is what ended up being the most effective. Apple chose utility over form for the Pro series, which is understandably not to everyone's liking.

Thanks for posting the silver. I'm still not a fan of the way it looks. It looks very cheap.... I wish they would've had a black version. I feel like Apple really botched this launch with the colors. I am half tempted to just cancel and wait for the 18 series.

Edit: Just canceled the order. I'll see what the 18 brings. I can't bring myself to pay $2k for an ugly phone.
It is just... shockingly ugly. I still cannot believe it's a real release from apple

I turned up to Apple Broadway in Sydney at 7.30am this morning and picked up my iPhone 17 Pro Max in Cosmic Orange and my partner’s one in Silver. I was first in line and they cheered and clapped as the doors opened LOL

There wasn’t much of queue and I was in and out of the store in 15 mins, including paying for a Belkin UltraGlass protector to be installed on the silver 17 PM.

First impressions:
  • The Cosmic Orange pops and is very vibrant. I absolutely LOVE this colour but orange/copper/red is my favourite colour anyway.
  • The phone doesn’t feel heavier than the 16 PM but it definitely feels thicker.
  • Bezels are the same as the 16 PM
  • Aluminium unibody is well made but I feel it’s a downgrade from stainless steel and titanium. Looking at the silver and orange, the silver feels noticeable “cheaper”.
I reckon for this year if you want battery life and performance, go for the Pro Max; If you want the most premium and elegant iPhone, go for the Air.

Pics below with the Cosmic Orange and Silver taken in both indoor lighting and in the sun.

Cases include Apple silicone in Terra Cotta, Apple TechWoven in purple and ESR clear case. I actually like the ESR clear case the most and I think Apple should’ve used the same MagSafe ring arrangement than the full white blockout.

There’s a day 1 iOS 26 update as well. Setting the phone up now and will post more thoughts later.

Happy to take questions!

We don’t have an Apple store in NZ however all three phone carriers in my local ****** mall all had display stock and I presume plenty of stock… I had a hands on with all the new models… I really like the cosmic orange but also the blue Pro… The Air in black was also very cool… but the green iPhone was my favourite…

There are apparently a lot of people who can't even seem to imagine that there are a lot of other people who live and work in places and jobs where their phones get dirty, dusty, wet, beat up and bounced around, and where a sturdy case is a virtual necessity.

That’s a big reason why I have an iPhone, androids never lasted more than 6 months for me. I appreciate the people that value the aesthetics of phones, they have the sorta jobs and lives us dirty folks would be horrible at, sitting at a desk is a form of torture to us! But that’s what’s been great about iPhones, they’ve built a phone that looks nice enough for folks to not put a case on it and strong enough to survive a cow stepping on it.

For me I’ve gone silver. Orange is too in my face personally. I like the colour but it’s too much for my liking. And blue is too boring. It’s black without being black.

I like the look and feel of metal without colour and so silver it is. Although I would have liked the back glass to not be white. They could have really made it interesting. They could have even gone black or blue or orange with that glass.
But silver looks cheap and basic. Looks like an entry level $199 cell phone.

I know it’s your winter/spring right now, but can you get the screen to dim in direct sunlight from overheating? That’s been my biggest gripe with the 16 PM and honestly the biggest reason I am upgrading is the improved thermal management that we’re supposed to be getting.

In response to DesertSilver, I know, perhaps if we could pool our money... We might be able to afford the 675LT. The F1 will probably go for USD$50mil - that's if they go individually. I suspect the lot will go together, probably for more than USD$100m.

The whole lot are beautifully finished. If I could have any of them for sure the P1 or the F1, money no object of course.

Sadly that kind of $$$ is out of my league.

This could be a business thing for Apple, bespoke customised iPhones and other devices. Special cases, special colours, etc. "Apple Special Operations" division.
