It’s a shame they made it thicker and heavier with all the efficiency savings it would have been nice to have kept it the same size & weight as the 15 pro max and it still probably would have had fantastic battery life but that might have to do with the switch to aluminium as as titanium is renown for its strength to weight ratio so maybe that also made the increase

I turned up to Apple Broadway in Sydney at 7.30am this morning and picked up my iPhone 17 Pro Max in Cosmic Orange and my partner’s one in Silver. I was first in line and they cheered and clapped as the doors opened LOL

There wasn’t much of queue and I was in and out of the store in 15 mins, including paying for a Belkin UltraGlass protector to be installed on the silver 17 PM.

First impressions:
  • The Cosmic Orange pops and is very vibrant. I absolutely LOVE this colour but orange/copper/red is my favourite colour anyway.
  • The phone doesn’t feel heavier than the 16 PM but it definitely feels thicker.
  • Bezels are the same as the 16 PM
  • Aluminium unibody is well made but I feel it’s a downgrade from stainless steel and titanium. Looking at the silver and orange, the silver feels noticeable “cheaper”.
I reckon for this year if you want battery life and performance, go for the Pro Max; If you want the most premium and elegant iPhone, go for the Air.

Pics below with the Cosmic Orange and Silver taken in both indoor lighting and in the sun.

Cases include Apple silicone in Terra Cotta, Apple TechWoven in purple and ESR clear case. I actually like the ESR clear case the most and I think Apple should’ve used the same MagSafe ring arrangement than the full white blockout.

There’s a day 1 iOS 26 update as well. Setting the phone up now and will post more thoughts later.

Happy to take questions!

Is the orange quite bright or more on the copper side like these images ?

Yes it is! Good spot.

I was going to get the Spigen Ultra Hybrid T, but I actually think this case is just as good for more than 1/2 the price.
I have the Spigen Ultra Hybrid T for my 16PM and have been very happy with it, so I wanted to get the exact same one for the 17PM. Sadly, the Ultra Hybrid T for the new phones now has that hideous square on the back with their prominent logo. Why couldn't they just keep it clean and clear like the 16PM? If I want it clear then I'd have to get the Ultra Hybrid (non T) but it has a cutout hole for the camera button and it just felt too weird not having a smooth side on the phone. I like the T model because of the flush camera button cover.

Like the OP I ordered the ESR, it checks off my preferences and is cheaper than the Spigen case. Now I still have about half a day to go until I can put something in it.

Hello,

From the photos you can't see the Apple logo on the back of the phone, is it covered by the case?

Thank you

Not fussed on the orange, not sure what Apple were thinking with that tbh. My wife went with the Silver as its the most neutral colour. if I had been upgrading this year, that would have been my choice. It's only the camera lense area that is ever seen for most people anyway as these things are usually cased.

What were they thinking? Let's see...

They were thinking that a lot of people will like it; others, of course, will not.
Quite obvious, don't you think?

But guess what, they also thought that not everyone must like it for it being a success. Because, luckily, nobody who likes a colour is going to be dissuaded by the fact that random people on the forums loathe it.

That's because people are deliberately scratching them to test how easily (or not) they scratch!

I wonder if some of those scratches could actually just be transfer from whatever scratched them, and hence could be rubbed away.

I must admit, giving the back of the phones a fingernail scratching was something I'd consider doing too!

Thanks for posting the silver. I'm still not a fan of the way it looks. It looks very cheap.... I wish they would've had a black version. I feel like Apple really botched this launch with the colors. I am half tempted to just cancel and wait for the 18 series.

Edit: Just canceled the order. I'll see what the 18 brings. I can't bring myself to pay $2k for an ugly phone.
At this point, you can’t cancel an order unless you weren’t supposed to receive it today. From day one, there have been photos and videos of the devices available, so you could have reviewed them before placing your order. So honestly, I don’t understand why you’re making a scene about this now.
