iPhone 17 to Feature 12GB RAM, Up From 8GB in iPhone 16 Models

Further proof that AI was not meant to ever come to the 15 or 16 series of iPhones.

they rushed it and the real AI iPhone is the 17.

I've said this for months now, apple AI is just not ready for prime time, they're so far behind google right now it's embarrassingly Samsung like.

and NO, the current AI beta on 18.1 is NOT AI, its like two features and not even useful ones.

The amount of RAM in an iPhone is such a silly thing to get frothed up about.

I've had different iPhones going on around 13-14 years. And have *never* suffered in any way or manner with whatever amount of RAM was in my iPhone. Never. They just work. Always.

Camera and related improvements are what interest me (being a photographer).
Gunny, since photography is one of the area where AI kicks in the most. But unless you take your pictures in raw mode, the picture is a heavily AI modified version of the raw camera data.

Being a photographer you are of course aware of this fact.

It’s obvious that Apple is putting much more effort into the 17 series so anyone buying or thinking of buying a 16 should be aware that next year’s phone is the real upgrade not the 16.

Also, this AI thing is so overrated literally no one will use it… It won’t change your life, it won’t make anything better and is a tremendous waste of resources both in the phone and in the outside world. Disable it and you’ll see the benefits of having all your phone’s RAM available to you as well as not worrying about some dumb gimmick.

Nobody knows for sure where this AI stuff is going but if you want your iPhone to be future proofed as much as that is possible you better ensure your phone has the hardware to run AI models, that means lots of ram.

It's silly trying to rationalize why 6gb or 8gb is enough ram when all indicators are that it won't be .

Don't understand all the fuzz about this. Never had I ever had any issue with an iPhone's memory management.
As they say in the financial world: Past performance is no guarantee of future return. It’s a different ballgame now with AI.

Courage. /s

Less interested in the 16 now and thinking a discounted 15 Pro Max is the way to go.
It might be iPhone 18 before Apple Intelligence is be properly baked.

Well, that’s what we’re hoping anyway. I wouldn’t put it past Apple to dedicate 8GB of RAM exclusively for AI. But I’m hoping that you’re right and my thinking is all wrong.

Yep, ram does matter now that's the trend tech is heading into with AI.

Just because iPhones managed to make do with low ram counts in the past doesn't mean it's a good idea to ignore where the future is heading with ram intensive AI.

Buy a 6gb or even 8gb ram iPhone and good chance you'll be in for an early forced upgrade if AI takes off and becomes essential like it's threatening to do.

It's a little more - $20 but I get you :)
You're right- prices have just about doubled in the last year, interestingly, after years of declines. It was the 128/256 price difference I was thinking of, from about a year ago, when manufacturers were trying to incentivise the 256 units while limiting production on the 128.

Same thing, I don't understand all the fuzz about AI. Don't have a clue at all how it will benefit my iPhone usage. I just hope we can disable as much as possible from it.

I guess we’re gonna have to wait to see if Apple surprises us and decides to bump the RAM at 12GB for the Pro models.

I’m on the fence about upgrading from a 13P.

Anyone who says they've never had an issue with RAM on an iPhone is either lying or completely clueless.

Anyone remember the RAM issues on iPhone 6? constant reloading of every single thing.

AND It's still an issue TODAY! the ram management on iPhone is TRASH and the myth that its somehow great is just marketing BS.

mean Pixel 9 Pros come with 16GB RAM for AI future proofing.

12 GB should be a minimum, at least for the pro models. Imagine selling a $1000 pro model phone with 8gb of ram in the AI age.

That black iPhone 16 pro does look good though, I'll likely upgrade from the 15 pro just for the color - 1st world privilege I know.

17 Pro will replace my 15 Pro Max. This year is definitely not looking like a year to upgrade for me.
