17e now with 256gb base storage and the price staying the same - that's quite a statement in these times of ai-server craze
In terms of the iPhone lineup it does represent some pretty insane value. I often find that 120hz isn't as pronounced on iOS as Android because the base OS has smoother animations at 60hz, at which point the question must be asked: Is the iPhone 17 worth the extra $200 for what essentially amounts to a 0.5x lens?

Good news that base storage is finally 256GB and price has remained the same. Hoping this is indicative of 512GB as base for Macs now too (although maybe not the new A series based laptop).
i'v been hoping that for years but it never seems to happen. Macs are almost unusable with 256. crazy to think 1tb was the minimum before they phased out HDDs meany moons ago

The change is especially notable, given the surge in price of DDR memory in recent months owing to the AI server build-out.
It's even more notable given the surge in flash-memory prices in recent months.

The real budget phone is the 16e below 500.
If by budget you mean "high budget", sure. People who are really on a budget will probably get something around €200 including VAT. So, no iphone, but more cameras.

Decent upgrades but it's still overpriced for a "kids" and "parents" phone...

So what phone do they have now?

Starting prices for iPhones:
$799: iPhone 16, iPhone 15, iPhone 14
$749: iPhone XR
$729: iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 12 mini
$699: iPhone 11
$599: iPhone 17e, iPhone 16e
$429: iPhone SE (3rd gen) (2022)
$399: iPhone SE (2nd gen) (2020)

Only the SE models have been cheaper and the newest is now four years old.

The iPhone 17e now comes with 256GB base storage, up from 128GB in the iPhone 16e. The change is especially notable, given the surge in price of DDR memory in recent months owing to the AI server build-out.

How is storage related to DDR memory?

Seriously I already heard from the mother-in-law. Hey iPhone is a pink phone. I need a pink phone.

I'm not the target market for this device, but this looks like a decent update for the price, especially when you factor in sales and carrier deals here in the U.S.

Still no Ultra Wideband for easier AirTag finding? Such a tiny chip that would help Apple sell more AirTags and they can’t include it at $599? The SoC seems like a pure copy/paste with the exception of A19.
it's not quite Apple Pencil level, but it does seem weird to have such a gap in potential accessories. I guess people with those will just have to live with 3rd party FindMy compatible bluetooth trackers?

But just fine for a corporate phone, which I think it mainly is.

Either way, prepaid carriers will, soon enough, have this on sale for $299 or less, and post-paid will give it away with a new line.
Exactly. This is perfect for a work-issued phone. Apple focused on the upgrades that such users will notice, such as MagSafe and better connectivity.

Still a bit pricey for a phone, I did think about the 16e, when my old Oppo started to play up, but the lack of a fingerprint scanner, as well as the price put me off, which is why I went for a Motorola.
Still, for someone who really want an Iphone then the 17E maybe the way to get one.

So do people still think the MacBook A series will have an A18 chip if the budget iPhone has an A19? I am thinking the early internal units had A18s due to the availability of the chips but that's not really meaningful. Inside many alpha products are older generation parts.

Agreed. Apple should be pushing this out for $399.

When they sell an iPad for $349 this phone has no business being $599.
How many generations behind is that 349 iPad processor again?

Can the iPad make calls? Kinda via apps, but thats $599.

This is a budget phone from a company that gives a damn

Is this one waterproof?

I liked the Nothings when I tried them in store, but they have alot of shortcomings that make it a budget phone, and not a premium-budget phone.

$499 is were the iPhone E price should have landed IMHO.

If this had supported AirTag, I’d have been on board. As it is, I’ll look for a gently used iPhone instead. I see some solid deals on the 15 Pro…

At a decade when even $100 Android phones have atleast:
<snip>
Ah yes, a $100 Android phone, the Trojan horse in your pocket invented for the sole purpose of knowing where you are, what you do and sending that data to an ad company so they can sell it to their customers.

Probably the filthiest, most-evil, worst piece of technology of the last 20 years with zero regards for privacy.

Sounds like a winner!

”Almost unusable”, come on man, it really isn’t. 512GB would be nice as a base but 90% the MacBook Air buyers is probably just fine with 256GB. The vast majority isn’t editing video, playing games, or has their entire photo album stored locally.

I'm a power user so it's definitely unusable for me but even average users like my cousin, who's a parent and takes alot of iPhone photos of her kids, that storage is gone in no time unless you're buying external drives to put stuff on. I stupidly recommended a base air at first and they had to replace it the next year with one with a terabyte... which again used to be the standard low level in the HDD days.

I sprung for the 512GB MBA and with 350GB free I kind of wish I would've saved my money. I don't keep all my photos and documents on a device where by I would lose them all if the device dies, is stolen, is lost or say the house burns down. Subscriptions are annoying but cloud storage is pretty cheap and seems like good insurance against losing photos and important documents.
