iPhone 2.0 Firmware (5A347) Available Early

Tut tut tut silly thing to do.... this version has only been in the wild for a short period of course nobody has jailbroken it or unlocked it.... back to 1.1.4 i tells ya!!

It would have been wise to wait until someone had jailbroken this firmware before you installed it. Sounds like you'll be sans phone for a while.

Folks, what you're downloading is not a final version of the iPhone v2.0 software.

The linked filed is a development version which contains a significant amount of debug code useful only to Apple engineers. The reason for the slow downs that you are experiencing is that this version is designed to dump debug logs from cache when it fills to 32k. As there is no location specified to dump the log to, the OS must wait for this process to time out prior to continuing on with the task which you've asked it to do.

As far as the OS restarts are concerned, this is likely due to 3G API calls being made on a non-3G phone, which in turn is causing application crashes.

-Reboot
-Attach the phone and open iTunes
-When you get the message telling you that you're in restore mode, and it forces you to restore(you will see update is grayed out)
-Hold down option while you click restore, then select the 2.0 software you downloaded. It took me 40 minutes to restore from it, but i'm back to normal now.

For anyone having problems let me tell you what I did and how I got this to work.

Setup:
MBP
Mac OSX Leopard 10.5.2
Firefox 3.0
iTunes 7.7
Unlocked ziphone iphone software version 1.1.4

Just download the file, In itunes under the device pane hold down option and then check for updates, select the file you just downloaded, It will load up your all good to go.


PS The app store is probably the greatest thing all of time I LOVE APPLE AND IPHONES I WISH I COULD MARRY YOU

Also note it shouldn't matter if your phone is unlocked or not but it does matter that your using firefox, if you dont have firefox download it now

Also if you wish for applications to be displayed in itunes just go to preferences and check applications

Yeah... ummm not true.
 
For those of you getting the (20) error

Here is what I did to fix that. I used the same shift+click... or whatever it was and reselected my 2.0 file. Make sure it is complete! It loaded after that and I was able to get it all back... except my friggin' contacts!!!!

I had rather guessed that about the 3G or GPS since it often seems to happen when it's trying to transfer location data.

and where then able to use their iphone, then a conflicting poster said that this did not work.

I am on a simplicity contract, running 1.4.

Could anyone confirm that this actually worked for them? so i dont spend the rest of my eveing recovering back to 1.4..

It worked for me. Don't get worried when it asks you to activate the iPhone; its just connecting your iTunes account to your iPhone. I got worried at that point, thinking it was going to ask me to sign up for a new 18 month contract. But it didn't, thank goodness. Phew.

I also had the error code 20 problem (restore mode) and fixed that by pressing 'option' when I clicked on Restore and then selected the .ipsw file again.

My SIM is an old O2 'Pay Up Front For Life' contract SIM -- I get 50 minutes to UK landlines and O2 mobiles. And its free, forever. Well it has been for the past 4+ years at least.

The early reviews (NYT, USAtoday) have noted that the battery life sucks, with reviewers running out of juice by early afternoon.

And the GPS is pretty paltry.

Last night I did a bandwidth test on my EDGE. I hit 230kbps.

I'll enjoy 2.0 on my 2.5G iPhone for quite a long time. I assume it will take them another year to get the battery life back where it belongs... 2-3 days without a charge.

Some of the apps def. need tweaking - the facebook app doesn't even let you see people's walls...isn't that the primary purpose of facebook? Walls? If I'm missing it btw let me know how I can access them, because as far as I can tell it's not possible.

Also, the AIM app works well, but I need an iChat app - I don't know half of the SNs on my buddy list, because as soon as I get a new sn I just put them in my contacts and I see their name.
 
The update worked fine for me, but none of the Apps will install. iTunes gives a message that my computer is not authorized for it.... ? Anyone else?

yeah that is about what i figured.

i am blown away by all the people willing to download unknown stats software for different kit that what they are installing on and then being shocked that things don't work.

have you also installed vista on your microwave?!?
 
There were quite a few scary moments in this process with the iPhone being wiped, restarting like twice, reactivating (even the nervous moment realizing my ATT bill is past due!), but eventually it worked fine, but it does take a LONG TIME, and its important to not interrupt the process or god forbid disconnect the iPhone at any time during. And yes, you need to be online, duh. And I had to re-sync everything that was originally on the iPhone from scratch (I wisely removed a lot of videos ahead of time to make lots of room, but i'm not sure if that's necessary or not).

OVERALL, it worked out AWESOME! :)

The iPhone iTunes remote ALONE is worth the risk, I've been using all day long from my upstairs bathroom to blare music into my roommate's rooms from a concealed location!!! :D

Seriously, the FREE iTUNES Remote is EASILY worth $20 to me, shhhhhhhh!

AOL Instant Messenger is also working fine for me. I haven't tried to much else.

I thought it could do that, if you don't use 3G. You're asking for a huge battery improvement otherwise - something like a 4-5 fold increase in energy density.

you hav e an unlocked 2.0 iphone with a non o2 iphone contratc sim in?
