This news mattered for people like me who have the first gen IPhone and who have lost their email capability since the last update. (I know another person with the same problem only he lost the setups - I still have it setup correctly, it just isn't sending me my email - except for one day).

My phone froze up the other day - never happened before. Wouldn't work for a couple of hours. Then it worked again. I wished I had never updated!

So this bug fix announcement saves me a trip to the Apple store to try to fix it. I can wait until Friday.

So how long is "Significantly longer battery life"? With my use (listening to music on Subway, checking email on my WiFi connection, etc), I have to charge mine daily. :)

I'm as excited as the next guy about bug fixes, I just don't understand why they gave it the 2.1 name. At best, it should be 2.03 or whatever 100th place decimal they would be at with this improvement.

I'm glad that 2.1 and Snow Leopard and such are going towards stability issues, but that very childish, eager-to-be-blown away side of me craves something ... exciting.

I'm happy with bug fixes. Even with its problems, my iPhone has really changed how I go about my daily business. The perfect device doesn't exist for met yet, but it's close enough for now

LOL @ all the fools who are moaning about the keynote being disappointing. 80% of the iPhone discussions since 7/11/08 have been about bugs and problems. 2.1 is announced to fix bugs and problems, and you're disappointed?

Well I'm going to guess that it's because they paid for a piece of crap. As well as paid for the opportunity to be beta testers for Apple.

Look, I love Apple products, but the company itself can eat a big one. So many people think that everything they do is gold, yet realistically the iPhone has been a joke, and this 'update' just proves it.

"hey cool, let's fix a bunch of crap that should have never been in a final public build of one of our marquee products...cool"

Please. If it was any other company they would have been crucified by now, but I'm always amazed at how much slack people give Apple.

FWIW, if the firmware is coming out on Friday, they're not going to spell out the new features today like they did with the new touch.

I just put myself through another 4 days of a drawn out wait. And then however long it takes to get 2.1 jailbroken.

so iPhone 2.1 update is available on Friday, but is the iPod Touch 2.1 update available today, or Friday too?

by all means i'm delighted about the firmware upgrade, but i think the claims are a bit empty.

why didn't they say exactly how much the battery life would improve by?

People who are soo disappointed in no real iphone news. Was their ever any indication by APPLE, not by the rumor mills that this event was an iphone event in the first place? NOPE

Did the event have an ipod screen on the invitation? YES.

It wasn't an iphone event. There are a zillion new features that would be cool with the iphone right now but honestly, when I'm browsing a page and it spontaneously quits on me and then I have to find the page again, because its not the in history, and I have to load it all again. Its just really annoying. Battery life and no more crashing? Thats awesome to me.

Careful the words you use when you write these posts. Nobody said "no app crashes". That would be crazy for any company to tell people. He said fewer app crashes. Apple doesn't have control over other coders and occasionally flawed software may make its way onto the App Store.

WRONG

According to MacRumors.com, he said NO APP CRASHES.

Some of you fanboys are too funny. Are you seriously going to get excited over a feature as "NO APP CRASHES"? That's not a feature guys..

I own an iPhone, and Apple has really screwed up their 3g launch. 1) MobileMe is a disaster, it could never do "EXCHANGE FOR THE REST OF US". Push according to apple, is 15 minutes wait from your computer. 2) iPhone 3g itself, plagued with 3g problems, instability with apps, and overall laggyness to everything.

I thought this whole "SANDBOX SDK APPROACH" was going to fix everything? Right now, my iPhone apps crash more then any treo or windows mobile phone I had. It was an idiot approach to the solution. Apple should have allowed people to do what they want, background etc. Let the people decide by their wallet on what apps deserve to stay or go. Simple Economics, steve obviously didn't take an economics course in college.

This seems like troll baiting, I am just ranting. This "Let's Rock" event was a slap to the customers who was promised a whole lot, and got back a buggy implementation of their promise.

does this update include speeding up the slow typing during SMS and other things? anyone know/think?

I mostly fixed this by doing a hard reboot every morning, right before I shave and brush my teeth, so it's done by the time I'm done. Note that this is by holding home+power buttons down until it shuts down, and not by the "slide to turn off" method. Or sometimes I use Powertool from Cydia.

And why is turning off the phone an acceptable fix to something?

ugh.

It's like saying, oh ... Every morning I have to restart my computer to fix a problem. No one would accept that as a solution.

Maybe the secret untold update will be the 2nd speaker will now mysteriously start to function on the iphone.

I personally do not see a need for a big event to release new ipods and updated firmware for the iphone and touch.

I'm thinking they just figured out how to turn off Location services when you're not using them.

Cause that alone has allowed my iphone 3g to have as long of battery life as my 2g iphone had.

NO app crashes?

Yeah right.

I think it is great that they are releasing this, but lets not make promises that are pretty much impossible in the computing world.

I wonder what the deal with "hidden features" is. Can't wait to see!

itunes 8, installing it now

I kinda hoped that they would redefine the interface, make App Syncing better, easier to browse apps, and a whole sleugh of things they could do to make the interface better...
like note syncing maybe

gonna restart the system and try out genius

Are you SERIOUS? There is only 1 physical speaker on the iphone. The other "speaker" is the mic. Let it go already.

Now that I think about it.....do you think there is a reason they are holding off on the iPhone 2.1 till Friday for a reason? It seems odd to release 2.1 for the touch and 2.1 for the iPhone a few days later....

then don't restart your phone and live with the lag. I don't live in a perfect world, some flaws I accept, some I don't, but I work around as many of them as possible.
