Genius sounds great to me. Anything that has the potential to give me a few surprises is more than welcome.:)

Then why have all the previous software updates been released at the same time for both devices?

Not really though whenever there's an update to the touch the iPhone has to wait much like the iTunes Wi-Fi store which debuted with the touch first but came later to the iPhone.

But i see what you're saying 1.1.3 & 2.0 came at the same time for both but there was no music event around those times. Maybe its safe to conclude that if a multitouch device update debuts at a music event, the Touch gets it first whilst the iPhone waits...probably so press attention isn't diverted

These are just theories i'm pulling out my ass btw

Was there not information flying around that features had been left out of the 2.1 beta released to keep them secret, well i guess that was a lie.

In the words of comic book guy, "Worst Keynote Ever"

IMO, the "features" listed here are a +x.x.1 update, ie this should be 2.0.3. I have a sneaking suspicion that there's more to this update, to be announced later, El Jobso was surprisingly quiet about the iPHone, almost an after thought, we know that is not their real strategy, so the omission of detail leads me to think there's more than he's not saying.

Early Adopters? Buddy, this is 2nd generation. There is no early adoption excuse anymore. The SDK was pushed back for 6 months, 2.0 was pushed back.

Don't be a fanboy and defend Apple's decision-making without thought. It was apple that said the SDK/sandbox/app approval solution would provide crash-free apps and stable phones. This was promised since September of last year.

So don't tell me, I am not reasonable to expect with all of Apple's protection on apps, a crash-free solution like they promised.

Your argument is analogous to "DON'T LIKE THE COUNTRY, MOVE OUT".. it simply doesn't work.

making a purchase is an option. Period.

If you dont like what your buying, OR HOW IT WORKS, skip it, and buy something else.

I dont see how my analogy doesnt apply. I havent used ONE COMPUTER that hasnt crashed at some point, I expect the iphone to behave similarly.

Sounds like I gave my thread plenty of thought.

And why is turning off the phone an acceptable fix to something?

ugh.

It's like saying, oh ... Every morning I have to restart my computer to fix a problem. No one would accept that as a solution.

You're kidding - Windows users have been accepting this as a legitimate solution for 15 years! Hell, I still do a 'therapeutic reboot' on my works Thinkpad once or twice a week now!

"Improved battery life" hopefully does not translate into "decreased performance"

"Fewer dropped calls" - I assume this [hopefully] means no more network switching in the middle of phone calls. If you are on EDGE and talking, you STAY ON EDGE! If you are on 3G and talking, you STAY ON 3G! No more of this "switching" in the middle of a phone call !

Hell, I still do a 'therapeutic reboot' on my works Thinkpad once or twice a week now!

Same here. I have found that as long as I reboot my iPhone regularly every few days, it never freezes/crashes unexpectedly. I'll bet the people that are having the freezing/crashing problems are the ones that never reboot.

They TOLD people there would be a big announcement. Why are we being unreasonable in expecting a big announcement?

I can appreciate that bug fixes are good, but when the new firmware is 2.x instead of 2.0.x, we aren't being unreasonable in expecting something more than bug fixes. I'm holding out hope that there will be more in 2.1 than he mentioned, especially since it was an iPod event, after all. ;)

They were told there would be big announcements, NOT iPhone announcements. Not everything Apple does revolves around the iPhone.

"Bug Fixes"

Woohooo!!! Yeah baby! Yeah! :D :D :D Someone break out the champagne!

By that line of reasoning, 10.5.0 should have been more stable than 10.4.x. Regarding the app sandboxing and the approval processes, these help the situation but the stability of the applications always comes down to the individual developers.

It's always nice when some people bring their own Kool Aid. I guess that leaves the rest of us more to convince ourselves.

thank you. :) 2.0 is new, and it will be fixed in all good time. I guess im just not as concerned as the next guy on this.

 And I interrupted my nap for this...

You've got to be kidding me...Apple calling on journalists to attend because it was really going to be important...a rainbow colored selection of Nano's?...bug squashing software upgrade for iPhone/iTouch?...HD downloads from iTunes 8.0?

how exciting :(

App Crashes are one thing
but OS system crashes, that lock the device up and you are forced to a do a Hard system restore
or you wake up one day, this has happened three times, and your music, movies, are gone, and all the apps including the mail, notes, and all the apple ones are just a shell...and you have to do a hard restore

17 lock ups, and 3 shell incidents since 2.0 came out...

i dont even like to use the touch anymore, and because it takes hours upon hours to restore all the music and movies and apps back on...

i now only have one or two apps, a few songs, and a movie loaded on in fear of another hard system crash

Friday can't come soon enough

Are you SERIOUS? There is only 1 physical speaker on the iphone. The other "speaker" is the mic. Let it go already.

Obviously I wasn't serious. Apparently you are way to serious. A little fun needs to be poked once in a while.

Why is iTunes telling me 2.1 is available.. in the store, and when I click update. It fails though. :(

It's a valid issue. 3g was an early adoption scenario. SDK was pushed back to make sure it was release-ready. 2.0 had to wait so it would would only be crap instead of the mega-crap that it could have been. Why are you so incredibly impatient when it comes to support?

iPhone is a mobile PC to a certain extent. Desktop PC's and even to a lesser extent OSX machines are crash-prone too. It's a fact of life and while it would be nice if it were 100% crash-proof, I don't have that level of expectation considering the complexity of the device.

This is not an Apple-fanboy issue. It's more of a patience issue with any company that does their best to support bleeding edge products. Apple is always trying to make an already good product even better. How many other companies jumps through hoops to please their user-base after they purchase something? Not very many that I know.

In this case, Apple is trying to get their device to work at a level you folks want it to. They don't necessarily have to but I'm pleased - and very patient about it. If an app causes my phone to crash, I don't use it. I'm very happy with my iPhone. Issues aside, it's still a fantastic product. I see it maturing bit by bit however you folks find every reason to sledgehammer them into the ground.

Whatever happened to those days where an unhappy consumer would just return their purchase? Obviously you must have liked it enough to keep it after the 2-week refund window has passed. I'm not pointing a finger at you saying "Shame on you, it's your own d**n fault".

You don't have to leave the country. ;) Just show some patience and be fortunate that Apple is one of those rare companies that actually continues to make a good product even better. Even if "better" means just getting it to work consistently on a day-to-day basis.

It's not the end of the world. There are more important things in life to stress out about than blowing a gasket because Texas-holdem ends abnormally once in a while.

if I do a complete restore when 2.1 comes out, will I lose my voicemails?

how can I just keep my voicemails and my contacts and do a full restore because I want to make sure my phone has a stable OS.

Hence the reason for this article...

No matter what Apple says Tuesday, it'll disappoint

Yes, I was talking about the entire announcement, not just the iPhone-related news.

I don't consider new colors and an accelerometer BIG NEWS!!!!!, sorry. And the removal of the 160 gig Classic? :( Bad news, but not BIG NEWS!!!!

iTunes 8? Good news. Genius Bar? Good news. BIG NEWS!!!!? Nope.

There was nothing in the entire press conference that was as big as they were advertising it to be.

When it comes to apps, this is the first generation. As in, Apple has had zero experience with other peoples code running on the iPhone before now.

There was nothing in the entire press conference that was as big as they were advertising it to be.
Where did Apple say this event was to be big? The invitation that the media received seemed to be as cryptic and sparse of words as every other event...

I personally find it humorous that before the App store release some folks here touted it as a revolution. Quality Apps that won't cause your phone to crash or lockup (or the Apps crashing themselves). This was thrown into the face of the WinMobile folks and the Palm folks that were really confused as to why the iPhones Apps were to be so superior. Now we have folks saying that it isn't a big deal if the Apps crash and that it is a computer is should be rebooted periodically (sounds like Windows to me...).
