Someone please enlighten me. What's this "Push" feature I hear so much rant about?
I already have push from my work email and my MobileMe account - I receive my email fairly quickly (sometimes) on the iPhone.
What's the "push" hype for?

Your iPhone has a timed check where it will go and look for new mail at an interval (15 minutes probably).

Push lets new data be "pushed" to your phone over the cellular network regardless of the state of the phone. This is similar to how a blackberry works - I get my email on my blackberry before it shows up in Outlook at times.

Okay - I understand what you mean, but I already have something like this. I get my mail nearly instantly with my MobileMe email, and also nearly instantly when I receive email from work, which is hosted on an Exchange server 2003 with Windows 2003 Server...

I guess I'd benefit if I was using a different provider?
M'kay... thanks!

The iPhone already supports Push email that essentially works like a BlackBerry does.

The feature that people are talking about is application push.

Since the iPhone doesn't allow 3rd-party apps to run in the background, this application push will allow a data to be sent to 3rd-party apps (like instant messengers and stuff) even when they're not the foreground application via an Apple push server and an Apple application that runs in the background of the iPhone.

This article explains it much better:
http://www.appleinsider.com/article..._background_app_limits_with_push_service.html

The "push" people are awaiting is push notification for apps other than mail. So, for example, if updates of your software are available in the App Store, the badge would signal that without your opening the App Store application. Or if a chat message comes your way on AIM, you would would get notice, even though you are not using AIM on the iPhone.

Apple don't give exact dates for updates, and this is why. Now push can come in a later update. It could still come in September, so Apple didn't lie.

Still, stoked about the fixes. Lack of push isn't as much of a pain as the bugs.

Apple's stock dropping and MacRumors forums being full of bitter people posting are two things that happen after virtually every Apple media event.

yep, but the stock was still recovering from the developers conference. Apple should not hype it up so much. In addition rumors are not really helpful. Since most if not all new things from this event were rumored before, people feel disappointed there were no new things that they hadn't heard about...

Sorry, but he already has blackberry-like instant push for e-mail (MobileMe and Exchange server with ActiveSync). The "Push Notification Service" that Apple was talking about but pulled from 2.1 at the last minute is the ability for third party applications to receive information from the internet without running in the background. This means a chat/AIM type application will chime and show the little red circle/number when people IM you for example.

This is actually a big deal, and a lot of people are waiting for it to happen. All current IM apps out there log you out whenever push the home button and you do not receive any incoming IMs until you reload the app later and log in again.

LAME!

I am upset. This is just plain old lame.

We need copy/paste and push.....push is the biggest for the sake of the im applications, certain other ones as well. But mainly the im. ugh.

Hopefully later this month, as Jobs promised we would get the push notification update in september. SO i will be waiting patiently again.

But its still Lame

The stock market in general has taken a major turn south today. 9 of 10 stocks lost value. The Dow is off 2.4%, the S&P 500 3.4%, and NASDAQ 2.6%. It could be the "big" event has something to do with Apple's stock price, but it would be hard to say that today.

There is no proof that Apple hyped it, other than rumors (which, as you mention, are not really helpful).

In regards to rumors regarding its updates, Apple's probably the best company when it comes to keeping them at a minimum.

The developers conference doesn't matter. Apple's stock almost always dives after these types of events where "just updates" are announced. It's been doing it for years.

Disappointing

How disappointing if your using your iPhone as a PDA!

I guess if your into games, its good for your, but I got an iPhone for a phone and PDA, and thus far, I would swap it for a HTC Touch in a flash. It has support!

Come on seriously, are us heavy users of smartphones suppose to just drop and forget all the features and applications we are use to using because Apple wanna be so tight with their codes

I got up early to see what had happened, and now it turns out to be a bad start to the day.
FOR GOODNESS SAKE APPLE YOU SCUM BAGS, GIVE ACCESS TO APP DEVELOPERS SO WE CAN USE SOME REAL APPS, not these stupid little apps you been pumpin out.

DDH - Need access for HandBase
DataViz - Need access for Doc to Go (How pathetic without Doc to Go)
WebIS - Need access for Pocket Informant

Others need access to the GPS Rx, Contacts Database etc etc etc

I guess it was a little obvious at the start if this didnt happen, then after the initial excitement dies from the screen looks and accelerometer etc etc then there will be a distinct movement away from the iPhone.

I for one am ready to move. Friday's release would wana be a lot more than what they have intimated - Bug Fixes........ARE YOU SERIOUS! in an x.x release?? WTF Thats what 2.01 & 2.02 were suppose to achieve

DISAPPOINTING

I think I can summarize this thread with how I feel right now: the announcement made me very happy, while making me very sad at the same time.

I just worry that the things I really want (besides a phone that works properly) may never come.

How do you REALLY feel about it

Genius Playlist

Though it's a cool feature that is playing some songs that I haven't heard in a while in my library it does appear to just use the same technology that their Mini-Store uses and not Pandora technology.
Proof of this is in the fact that if you play something that isn't in the store or an artists that iTunes doesn't sell then it will tell you that it doesn't have a genius entry for this song. If you have any Garth Brooks in iTunes just try that and you should come up empty handed.
It has to be based on what other people bought and similar artists. It's still a pretty cool feature but would be even better with the Pandora Project incorporated.

Just because you don't care about what was announced, doesn't make them any less "big". These announcements are huge for shareholders, as these updates/revisions will keep people buying for the holiday season. Also, apple never "advertised" this event to be big. Hell, they didn't advertise this event at all. They invited the press to a closed event. 99% of the buying public won't see the hype, the live text feeds, the rumors. All they see are the new products, which will look pretty huge to them. Apple isn't in business for us, the geeks and rumor addicts. They are in business for the majority of people who buy. We are not the majority.

Very true, actually...

I didn't believe for a moment that it would be crash proof. That is why I find the responses funny.
I didn't think you did. I just find it interesting reading about other people that honestly had an expectation of crash-proof. Most of my misbehaving iPhone apps will abnormally stop and take me back to the home screen. That's crash-proof right? Or do the readers expect the app itself to never crash which in that case, falls on the lap of the developers themselves.

what happened to push services and turn-by-turn GPS support?

I'm pretty sure that there is an issue with charging the battery while using GPS where the phone refuses to charge to prevent overheating. So, using turn-by-turn GPS while charging the battery (if it were even possible) would fry the phone. Using it for any long drive/trip would wipe out the battery in a few hours, making it a semi-usless function. The charging auto-shutoff would have to be bypassed I imagine. Perhaps the allegedly improved power management in 2.1 will take care of this

How is "apps not crashing" a good feature... come on folks we can only be fanboys to a point.

I am so excited about this fridays new 'crash free apps' feature! Pleeeeeeez!

So true. Now bug fixes are an exciting new feature...?! No crashing apps and FEWER (not NO) dropped calls as well, a FEATURE? What is wrong with this picture, guys? Am I the only one who thinks that that is actually something you would expect right from the beginning...? Granted, better battery life is appreciated and good but this should have been version 2.01 not 2.1!
And btw, I am still on 1G iPhone, waiting for the 3d one (if I can hold of)

I did not hear anyone complaining about jumping to AT&T knowing their network was ****. Now that the iPhone is having problems everyone is complaining. Everyone knew going in what to expect with AT&T.

Sure, I'd love genius and nike+ to be added, but all I really want and need is an iPhone which doesn't suck and works properly.

Sure, an iPod can crash and suck; it's just music. But your phone, email, and work tool has to be rock solid. It is a safety issue and a productivity one.

(Of course, I expect quality on the iPod front. My point is only one is generally a nice-to-have entertainment device while the other is an essential utility.)

I really, really hope 2.1 makes the iPhone a high quality product, because right now the iPhone sucks pretty bad with all the bugs and the painfully slow interface.

Looks like the iPod/Music app took some cues from the Remote app and made song lists better. No longer are they limited to just the song name -- now we get artist and album. Very nice.
