The difference is pretty amazing. Everything seems to work silky smooth now. Well done Apple.

We'll have to see how network transition and dropped calls goes.
Maybe the changed the software to show more bars than it did before SO THAT it doesn't switch from 3G back to EDGE as easily.

The "3G" logo is different.

Yeah, but gas prices are still way too high.

weird problem, i had my phone jailbroken and decided to go back to being legit with this f.w. update. one of the programs i had installed was make it mine. i changed the att logo to the word "blurg". after updating, it is still there. the att logo did not come back, that doesnt seem right?

Can you post a screen shot ?

I think the iphone shouild startup on the middle page of apps being the main one?

So for example say there are 5 pages of apps it should start on the middle (third) page, that way you only have to scroll half way for the other pages.

Did that make any sense to anyone other than myself?

that happens to everyone who used MIM. it's because it's not really a jailbreak hack. The system allows carriers to change the name at will. You can even use Caption Crunch to change it without JBing.

does this update require the phone to re-activate? im overseas and keeping it on airplane mode currently. i dont want to wind up bricking it until i get home in two weeks.

not sure if it's been posted. but since installing 2.1, my 3G and E icons are now reverse of what they used to be. ie the letters are now the colour of the box without a box around them. anyone else with the same thing?

hey if you guys tap on the battery icon does it change to the percentage?

been about 24 minutes since I plugged in my iphone and started this... and it's still backing up. grrrr... i really hope this update is worth it, i'm gonna be so late for work!

Note:

It appears Itunes 8 is NOT required to update the phone. I just restored to 2.1 using Itunes 7.7. I'm on the verify step at the moment.

This happened to me too. Disconnect the iPhone and quit iTunes. Reconnect the iPhone and everything should work okay
Ok, tnx. Did that and I seems OK now.

My findings so far:

- much faster contacts scrolling
- no more apps crashing
- little GUI changes that will not increase my heart beat

IMHO they better could call this upgrade 2.0.2001

When my phone was done, iTunes said "your phone is being activated," and then it said "your phone has been activated," and then on the phone it said "Your phone has been activated." I never saw the word "Reactivated," but I don't know if it's the same thing or not.

Knowing AT&T, they'll try and charge everyone an activation fee again!

Genius playlist seems pretty cool. Backup was super fast. Apps downloaded without crashing and fast.

Gotta go golfing ... Hope this fixes most of the problems everyone has been having.

So here is my question: does this firmware restore the iPhone 2Gs responsiveness to the 1.x.x level? The one thing I hate about 2.x.x is it made my iPhone slow and laggy.

I don't have the Mac I sync my iPhone with me and won't until Monday, so please give me something to look forward to by telling me this update will give me back the slickness that was my iPhone prior to 2.0. (Love the 2.0 features, just not the lag).

When my iphone restarted I didn't have to restore from backup. Did this happen for everyone?

Everything was there- nothing missing at all. It almost was an archive and install as opposed to a fresh install. Strange? Or normal?

Good to know. Thanks!

i am a little worried about the battery/standby issue that has surfaced with 2.1 IPod Touch users. Hopefully, does not affect the IPhone 3G.

PS. The backup before update is painfully slow.

Here is a speed comparison of 3G between 2.0 and 2.1.

Tests performed at iphonespeedtest.com. I took 3 tests each time and gerived the average.

2.0 - 270 kbps
2.1 - 439 kbps
