you serious? I'm still on 1.4.4 and weary of updating

Going to 2.0 will relock it. 2.0 has a radio update in it (so you'll get it by going to 2.1). I think it added the Locate me as a "turn off" "turn on" feature.

Just pwn it to 2.0 and then update to 2.1 :)

How do you skip backup? After 6 weeks of having my phone, I just synced it with my computer for the first time. The 2.1 update took 12 minutes from start to finish. If it took that short of a time, does that mean it did not backup? Where do I have a choice? I don't recall it asking me.

It doesn't ask, it just does it. Mine has been backing up for over an hour and I am about 75% the way there. My phone is currently broke for all 3rd party apps. I am more than curious to see if the update fixes it or if I have to nuke the phone first. When my gf updated her touch to 2.1, all 3rd party apps magiclly starting working again.

I have just applied the 2.1 update and have noticed the following changes:

- The screen seems more yellow
- iPhone is definitely snappier
- The internal speakers are definitely louder
- The second speaker now works on the bottom of the phone (it has never worked since purchasing iPhone)
- If you shake iPhone when playing music, it shuffles the current playlist
- 3G signal strength is vastly improved, before I could only get the 'washing machine' icon now I get full 3G coverage!
- Battery life is MUCH improved. I haven't had to charge iPhone since the 2.1 update!

A big pat on the back goes to Steve and the team.

Your so funny:rolleyes:

weird problem, i had my phone jailbroken and decided to go back to being legit with this f.w. update. one of the programs i had installed was make it mine. i changed the att logo to the word "blurg". after updating, it is still there. the att logo did not come back, that doesnt seem right?

That's right. It changes the image that gets backed up by iTunes. So after a restore, it should put it back. My Carrier logo has been set to "w00t!" for a few firmware versions, always seems to come back. :)

I'm pretty sure one of those "speakers" is a microphone. If you're now hearing something out of it, you might be crazy.

But I could be wrong.

Edit: doh! I get it.

Genius Mode

For everyone that was having problems finding the Genius mode after updating, i could not find Genius mode until I did a re-sync and then it appeared as if by magic.. Woo Hoo I love Genius mode on itunes 8 looking forward to it on my iphone, too bad that was a false rumour about Genius mode being added to the older classic ipods (I have the 80 gig 4G).

I think the iphone shouild startup on the middle page of apps being the main one?

So for example say there are 5 pages of apps it should start on the middle (third) page, that way you only have to scroll half way for the other pages.

Did that make any sense to anyone other than myself?
I hate that idea.

Beyond the dock, I have the rest of my most-used apps on the front page.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5F136 Safari/525.20)

did anyones events get wiped on calender when they updated cuz mine did?

When I click Settings - Date and Time, it jumps back Home. Can anyone confirm this bug ? The only thing I changed was the keyboard from English to Czech...

Re: AIM not able to connect...
Just delete it from your iPhone and re-download/install it from the App Store. It will work again - regardless of firmware.

(Sorry, already asked and answered.)

VERY INTERESTING. Okay, since I had never synced my phone to my computer before, and therefore I had zero songs and zero Apps, then perhaps that explains why the backup plus installation took a total of 12 minutes total. I'm going to remember this next time I think about adding Apps.

Just finished 2.1 download. Took about 2 min on my cable connection. 237.8 mb.

Now doing the auto backup before the install...and it's taking painfully long!! They couldn't fix the backup first with a small fix? My longest backup was an overnight job. Not sure when it actually finished but it was well into the 2 hour range. This better not take that long. I MUST start counting 3g bars immediately!!!

help me.

omg, i was about 40 minutes into the install... and i got an error msg saying that my iphone had been "disconnected" so it not complete the update. but i haven't movved my phone from my desk! argh! i just hit "update" again and now it's starting the install and back up all the way from the beginning again... ARGH!!!!!

Location Services Sucks Now...

the new update changed the way location services is used by the map application. Previously, if you had location services turned off (to save battery) and you tried using the map application, it would ask you if it could use it. Tapping ok would automatically turn it on for you and you would continue directly within the map application. The update now asks you to go to settings to turn location services on, so then you have to go back to maps afterwards to continue what you were doing. They basically added an extra step...WHY????

Also, turning 3G displayed a beautiful 5 bars (where I only used to have 1-2 bars) but this lasted only a few seconds before the signal jumped back and stayed in E. This didn't happen before in the same location (it stayed with low bars in 3G).

Contacts loads *somewhat* faster, but other than that, I'm really frustrated with the location services overhaul.

First Impressions of 2.1

Contacts and typing definitely more responsive, not going to say snappier! Note, I did a full reset before installing so that I could do a like-for-like comparison.

Never really had a problem with backup -- but I only have three pages of apps. But, get this, first back up took nearly a minute and a half (longer than usual). Second backup took about 30 seconds (bit longer than usual). Third backup took less than 2 seconds (honestly not exaggerating!). Quickest ever.

Genius only showed up after a couple of syncs (can find it under Playlists>Genius>Select a Track or tapping album art on playing song, middle of the slider).

Others have already mentioned the new green apps indicator in iTunes memory allocation bar; new GPRS, EDGE and 3G symbols.

Calls and data same as before, but not had a chance to test it elsewhere -- always had good reception at home and work.

All in all, this feels rock solid. A few new features for me, and all in all a bit more slick. Liking this update!

Right after plugging the iPhone on iTunes you just click the 'x' on the right of the iTunes display during the "backing up" phase of the sync. It will skip the backup and start syncing info.

I highly recommend plugging your phone into your computer more regularly. Six weeks is way too long to not back up all your info, especially your contacts. If something should happen to your phone or it gets lost then you're totally screwed. Then I have to hear loud complaints from customers at the Apple store crying because they lost all their info (true story and Apple was offering to replace her iPhone to boot, how ungrateful)

Yes

Do you have the translucent menus hack installed in Mac OS X Leopard? My iTunes 8 wouldn't start up until I reversed the hack. If you don't know what I'm talking about then you don't have the hack.
Same here, I reinstalled OS 10.5.4 without hack now iTunes 8 working

Well it's been consistently showing 5 bars so far since the update before it used to usually hang around 3 bars in my house. Looks good so far.
