Installed this morning at work and things seem to be working great. The phone feels to be responding much faster. Overall I'm happy with it so far.

I'm still waiting for the backup before the install starts. Damnit I hope that speeds things up this time around.. Backups are the mortal enemy of the iPhone user....

For what its worth the backup took about 20 minutes on my PC. When it showed 3/4 of the way done it stayed like that for a while and then it immediately started the software install.

Not 100% convinced that the signal bars is a true indication. Just did a test with the Speedtest app and only got 578k for down and 116k for up and this is with 5 bars on 3G. Before it would be 1 maybe 2 and would jump back to edge. Sometimes now after the update it will be 4-5 bars 3G then it would switch to Edge with the bars still reading 4-5. weird. Then again I'm in an odd part of the office. Bars are way more than before but not really sure its a true indication.
Speed and signal strength are two totally separate things. You can have five bars, but the network might be congested and thus you get slower speeds. The bars won't tell you how fast your connection is, just that you have an adequate signal.

What a rip! The new update doesn't have the genius feature found on the new touch or nano. Or am I missing it?

And I would've really like the "shake to shuffle" feature. Can't find that anywhere either.

If I followed this thread correctly genius should be available but shake to shuffle remains a ipod nano feature.

Okay i must be stupid :) I went through this whole thread. I don't see the new option for SMS alerts. Or is it just default?

I didn't have permissions to upgrade to 8 on my work computer, but I did have 7.7. I was able to run the update using 'shift - update' and manually selecting the file. One note after the update I am unable to use the phone with iTunes anymore (just have to wait till I get home).

oh...and it wiped one of the iTunes rentals I had. Crap now no movie for the plane ride home.

or you could of waited until you got home and then updated. another macrumors loser bites the dust.

Please read some of the posts before repeating what many others have already written. Same goes for people complaining about how long it's taking to back up the iPhone BEFORE THE UPDATE IS EVEN ON THEIR IPHONE!!!!!!!!!!

What we're complaining about is that it is taking so ridiculously long to perform the backup. That's the point. I realize 2.1 is not on my phone, but I'm still backing up so I can install and it's been an hour and I'm less than halfway done. Let people use the message board. OK. I just updated. took about 15 minutes, but thats fine.

First thing I noticed, the phone is on and it says "iPhone is Activated" and when you slide the bar it ask you to dismiss that message, I just think this is weird.

Now, I used to get about 1 to 2 bars of 3G in my office, now I get Full 5 Bars. NIIIIICE!!!! but wait  I'm doing a speed test, it SUCKS!! 47 Kb/second download and upload is 79.268869 Kb/second.

OK, What the heck is going on? I just powered off my iPhone and i'm restarting. Lets see what happens. Still sucks!!, maybe everyone is testing at the same time. i'll try later.:apple:

Why not just move that app to the correct location when it's downloading. After it's done the old one disappears and your organized apps is back! :)

not sure about anyone else, but i just updated an app on 2.1 and it showed it downloading at the end of the list, but it kept the software where it was upon installation. seems to be a fix...

When upgrading from a jailbreaked 2.0.1 iPhone 3G, mine froze on the Apple logo while restarting after the update finished. I am now performing a full restore to see if it will fix the problem.

Understand that but the changing from edge to 3g when there is 4-5 bars is odd. I'm just chaulking it up on the location of where I am even though I'm in front of a window the window faces a side of the other part of a building.

As I told all of you, I just synced for the first time to update to 2.1, which only took 12 minutes (because I had no Apps and no songs to backup).
I have a question though ... how do I transfer photos from my iPhone to my computer? I created a new (empty) folder on my computer and clicked "sync" but it didn't transfer the images. I want them deleted from my phone also; hence "transfer" the photos.

Should I use iTunes or "My Computer?" Can it be done in iTunes?
Thank you.

May have been answered, but does it upgrade the modem firmware?

Well, stupid question maybe, since it is supposed to improve 3G performance.

I noticed, quite by accident, that wiping my finger left and right across the email lists enables and disables the "Delete" button for whatever email was under the finger motion. I suppose it's a handy feature although I'm going to be upset if I actually delete mail by accident because of it. The Edit button was a lot safer, IMO.

It was always there in ver 2.x

Well good, you're the one who's not confused.

But everyone else with this complaint is saying stuff like "I thought this version was supposed to be faster!"

So, like it or not, you're going to get lumped in with them.
