Just tested installing an app and it (Facebook app) took about 7 seconds to download and install. That's a HUGE improvement at least from my experiences.

And I still get a 2 second lag when I bring up my contacts through the "Contacts" app, but no lag when I bring them up through my phone app. Strange.

Updating on a XP machine you don't normally sync with

You can update with a windows machine without losing your data. I sync with my iMac at home, and just used my XP laptop to update. Nothing was lost. I choose not to do a back-up when I was asked.

You're not alone.

I wouldn't, but if you can't wait, and don't mind losing your music, videos, and podcasts, go for it.

Why would you want to skip the backup when it would mean that if something goes wrong, you won't be able to put everything back into your phone? Makes no sense to me, just to save some time...

3G Strength - The Real Test

For an accurate test of your 3G signal strength, and to see if the 2.1 update really does someting, other than just bump the bars up visually, put your iPhone into "Field Test Mode" prior to the update and then after the update. Example:

To do so, go to the number pad and type *3001#12345#* hit send.
Look at the numeic indicator next to your carrier logo in the upper left of the screen. The lower the number, the weaker the signal. Keep in mind that all numbers are actually - negative. The closer to 0 the better the signal. This is resulted from the carrier, not from Apple.

-75 gives all 5 bars of strength. Call quality is perfect.
-105 no bars, just barely hanging on to 3G. Call quality is sub par.

to exit field test mode, just hit your home button. Ther are a slew of other things in this mode that you can see, but unless you are a UMTS technician, most of it will be gibberish to you. This will really tell you what is going on behind the scenes of the signal bar.

As I told all of you, I just synced for the first time to update to 2.1, which only took 12 minutes (because I had no Apps and no songs to backup).
I have a question though ... how do I transfer photos from my iPhone to my computer? I created a new (empty) folder on my computer and clicked "sync" but it didn't transfer the images. I want them deleted from my phone also; hence "transfer" the photos.

Should I use iTunes or "My Computer?" Can it be done in iTunes?
Thank you.

iPhoto (or your normal photo-importing program)

The phone has a camera. The computer treats it like any other digital camera. Just import like you would any other photos from any other camera.

Sync Error

just installed 2.1

iPhone goes thru the whole sync process then display the error below.

Anyone else?

I have never used iTunes/iPhone in Windows, so am guessing here. Does the folder with the photos in need to be in "My Pictures"?

Thank you. I'll just use "My Computer" then. Thanks. :)

BINGO !!!! When you go to "My Computer" and click on "iPhone3G," all the photos pop up, just like a flash drive or digital camera.

It doesn't ask, it just does it. Mine has been backing up for over an hour and I am about 75% the way there. My phone is currently broke for all 3rd party apps. I am more than curious to see if the update fixes it or if I have to nuke the phone first. When my gf updated her touch to 2.1, all 3rd party apps magiclly starting working again.

Mine was broke for 3rd party apps as of yesterday afternoon. I didn't restore, hoping 2.1 would fix it. I'm happy to report it did. :)

Hopefully it also prevents it from happening again.

Nope. Didn't fix it. In fact, all of the apps showed up as Other in the what's used bar. Nuking and reinstalling for hopefully the last time.

If you've synced, go to playlists, it's there.

And with over 700 contacts, my contacts start scrolling immediately after I open it. NO LAG whatsoever! :)

Do you get any lag (meaning, if you swipe the instant the app comes up it won't respond immediately) when you look at contacts through the "Contacts" app? As I just mentioned I get a lag using that app, but not when I go to "Phone" with the contact tab as the default tab.

-71 at my office building in Nashville, TN

ooo :)

Up to -69 now.

What we're complaining about is that it is taking so ridiculously long to perform the backup. That's the point. I realize 2.1 is not on my phone, but I'm still backing up so I can install and it's been an hour and I'm less than halfway done. Let people use the message board. All messages do not require your approval.

Yeah, I know what you're complaining about. I'm waiting myself and it's been more than an hour. If you did realize that 2.1 is not on your iPhone then what are you complaining about then? Why would backup times be different before the update? They have always been slow!

The person that I was quoting obviously did not realize it or else he wouldn't have said that he thought backups weren't going to take so long. Comments don't have to meet my approval but posting up the same trivial complaints as others clutters up the board when all you'd have to do is skim the posts and look for the answers to your gripes. It's a waste of everyone's time, not just mine.

very slow 3g network speeds with speed test, I'm wondering if they simply made the bars show a stronger signal then they actually do, that way if we complain about signal strength they can say, "well you have 4-5 bars, its not our problem"

I used to get 1.3 mbps now its 200kbps

I was hoping to have SMS forwarding but I guess not.

Stability wise...

Reception: Had 2 3G bars in my house now 4-5 bars
iPod shortcut:iPod shortcut from double tap home button works like 2G iPhone on 1.1.4...the soft buttons don't lag, even when in mail, safari
Safari: hasn't crashed yet
Contacts: My contacts are sync'd to mobile me and use to take a few seconds (5 sec), now there's no lag. No lag in scrolling.
Typing: No lag. Predictive text now working like on 2G iPhone 1.1.4

Update good so far.

Doing first backup now since upgrading. Will know how fast on the 2nd sync after disconnecting from my mac.

wow - the speed increases are great - typing, backing up and installing app are indeed miles faster!!!:D

Haha, that's cool! I love tech screens that I don't really understand. Makes me feel like some sort of expert.
