Ha ha, joke's on you, Jack.

The post just before it said you have to shake to activate the phone. Another joke.

Who looks like a jackass for posting before reading now?

I admit i misconstrued but so did you jackass

The previous joke was about shaking to activate repeated alerts. I thought he meant to activate shake to shuffle...you seem to think it was to activate the phone itself as in via iTunes server, but you'll tell me i got that wrong too now wont you

On another note

My battery seems to be doing better yesternight i installed 2.0.2 in anticipation of 2.1 and to play two new games id just bought. Suffice it to say after 3 rounds of games my phones battery was at around 75%

After the update i've watched a Youtube video, played two rounds of games, a phone call, 2 SMSs, and a track from iPod. After all that my battery is still full...98% i'd guess

the new edge and 3g logos!

I'm gonna post this every page until the cannon fodder gets it.

For the love of God:

* There is NO "setting" on the SMS alerts. It just happens if you don't view a text message.
* The yellow tint message was a JOKE by the OP.
* Your phone will not have faster backup until AFTER the update. Before and during the update it will continue to be slow because the UPDATE HASN'T BEEN APPLIED YET
* The 3G signal strength adjustment was to the DISPLAY of the signal. you will still have the same signal strength you had before the update - the difference is that the phone will show a higher number of bars for that, even though the signal itself has not changed.
* This update will do NOTHING for your speed. That is a function of the cellular network and not the phone.
* The 3G and Edge ICONS WERE CHANGED. They now do not have the boxes.
* There is NO SHAKE TO SHUFFLE in this update.
* GENIUS DOES WORK after applying the update. You may need to re-synch 2-3 x to get it to display.
* The headphone cable DOES NOT act as a cellular antenna. That was another JOKE.
* Don't bitch about features that WERE NOT ADVERTISED as being part of the 2.1 release. 90% of the people here just want a phone that works as it should first. After that, we can worry about enhancements.
* I know the thread is long, but at least READ BACK 4-5 PAGES or so.

You seem cranky...

You don't really know what you're talking about.

For one, Genius and the Genius Sidebar are two different things. They are completely independent of one another: I have Genius turned on, but I hide the Sidebar. Poof! No pesky music recommendations from the iTunes Store! Amazing how simple that was; all you had to do was listen and not jump to conclusions.

*snip*

I'd just like to add this. There's no iTunes store recommendations in the iPhone Genius. Just playlists generated that fit together.

It's awesome.

You can install 2.1 via a computer you are not synced with. I just did it successfully without losing any music or apps. Note this is with iTunes 8, I do not know if it is true for older versions of iTunes.

Just say no to any requests to backup or sync. That will allow you to click on the check for updates button and start the process. Remember, every time iTunes asks you to backup or whether you want to sync, say no.

After the update installed, everything was still on there. It is only when you sync do you run the risk of losing music/apps.

I think thats the problem, most of the processing and intelligence must happen in iTunes and then part of it is sync'd over with all your music. It looks like below:

If someone had read the prevoius threads you would see there is no reason to bang your head. If you do then you might be a REDNECK. LOL

I have the Genius icon in my iphone as I stated before. When I press it I get a message that states:

"Genius playlists are not enabled. Use ITunes to enable Genius Playlists"

I am able to use the Genius in Itunes so what am I missing. I have tried to rsync and that just does not get it.

Please assist not give me hell. Just looking for help, this is a forum right????

It's my understanding there's no "setting" for the 2 additional text alerts. It is enabled by default and works like this:

You receive a text message. The phone alerts you with vibration and sound. You do nothing to your phone. The phone automatically gives the vib/sound notification again after a set time period. You still do nothing. The phone does the vib/sound notification one more time after a set period, then stops.

If you view the text message before the two extra alerts (or after the first extra), then the phone will not alert you again.

Thanks for the explanation. I was also looking for a "Setting" on this.

I think it would have been more useful to some folks to have the option (as in, you can choose to have it or not) of additional notifications for a new voice mail. Some people are used to some external notice (LED blink?) on their phones to alert them that they have voice mail if they happened to miss the initial notification. It seems with the iPhone they need to wake it up in order to even check to see if they have voice mail.

While it may not actually affect the antenna directly, using the headset should give you a better signal because the phone is sitting still. with relatively little interference from having a body close by holding it and sheilding some signal away from it. My signal is so crappy in the living room of my home that I leave it sitting in the only spot in which I get a signal at all, and when I make or receive a call I just plug in my headphones and use it while it sits there..

I think you are correct on the interference from a body. Radio doesn't penetrate dense substances like water very well, and the human body is mostly water. (And some people are even more dense up in the region of the head...)

I have an old MP3 player where they clearly documented that the headphones were used as an FM antenna. That may or may not apply to the iPhone, however.

I think sitting still isn't much of an issue, the Doppler effects are minimal, given that the phone works fine when inside a rapidly moving car.

My backups have never taken more than 5 minutes, even with over one page of third-party apps, but now they're even faster.

All apps and iTunes media on the phone remained intact after updating. It did not have to restore anything from the computer (for sure, since I applied the update from my laptop at work and ALL my media is on my desktop at home).

More bars reported on 3G service here in my office at work. And where before I could not load a webpage with 3G, I now can - so its not just showing more bars, but its actually seems to have something to improve signal utilization. IIRC, the # of bars is more of an indicator of signal QUALITY, not strength. (AT&T in US). Anyway, more "bars" or not, 3G is working better for me in limited testing so far.

Keyboard lag fixed. Contacts lag fixed. SMS lag fixed (though was never very bad for me).

Haven't tried Genius play lists yet.

DataCase icon is fixed - you can see the rounded square background (and this is not due to a DataCase.app update, since it changed immediately after updating iPhone to 2.1. Unless the update made all the icons reload themselves some how....

Way too early yet to assess battery life.

So far, A+ update.

so I can't figure out the genius playlist thing.

This might of been said already, but i noticed when you take a screen picture (press off/on button and home button at same time for a second) it now makes a camera shutter sound. before it just used to go to a white screen without making any noise.

just installed 2.1. started at 9:35am and finished on 10:15am. i used to have 2 bars for 3G at work, now i have 5. but it doesn't matter because the speed has not improved. i usually check speeds on the apps store and going to top 25 and seeing how fast all the icon images load. for wifi, it's instant. for 3G, it's almost... but not the 3G with 2.1. it feels just as slow as edge, which is sad... i guess i'll see how 3G speeds go within the next couple days...

me neither... it keeps saying "genius playlists are not enabled. use itunes to enable genius playlist."

i have itunes 8 and enabled genius playlist there. however, i don't have any songs on my itunes library. is that why it doesn't work?

3g speeds...all about att

The 3g speeds are all about att and not apple.

I started my commute this morning in NJ where I got top speeds on 3g. Once i hit work in NYC it dropped to slower than edge. Apple could release the mother of all updates but it will not change the 3g speeds.

My EDGE speeds absolutely piss me off. I just ran three tests on EDGE:

70 Kbps
18 Kbps
44 Kbps

I get 1-2 bars of service in my area which is pretty populated although my area is quite ghetto'ish. I wonder if that is a factor because when I lived in Wilmington, NC, I worked in an area where there is absolutely no EDGE signal and maybe 1-2 bars of service (of which was in a ghetto).

A coincidence? Hmmmmmmmmmm...

I updated and the whole process took about one hour. From download to update...

Things seem to be very smooth. So far, no complaints. I notice the syncs don't take AS long..

i like this update so far..

My 3g connection actually got worse! How could that have happened? I upgraded from 2.0.1 to 2.1 and before in my house i got 1-3 bars on 3g, now I can't get any 3g and have been stuck on 5 bars edge. WTH is up?

me neither... it keeps saying "genius playlists are not enabled. use itunes to enable genius playlist."

If you don't have music in your iTunes playlist, how exactly do you expect the phone--or iTunes, for that matter--to create a playlist of your songs that goes with the current song being played?

You have to have music for the function to actually work.

OK maybe that was a joke.......if it wasnt then you need Music in your library for genius as it uses your own music to a) recommend new songs and b) create playlists based on music that you select.........

I thought MMS was a poor excuse for email.
Get with the program MMS is dead!

Wrong! e-mail is a poor excuse considering you want to send it to any other phone in the world. Hell if you want e-mail so bad then just send a text as an e-mail. MMS is a big feature thats missing and its ridiculous! I dont even get notices about picture messages I cant look at.
