Just to let you lucky folks with Netshare App loaded up on your iPhone - it's still there after the upgrade! :):):) (haven't tested yet though)

listen all you "netshare still works" people. atleast now you should understand that AT&T is not the only network provider for the iPhone. Remember when steve spoke of 70 countries..!!

Well I have now upgraded to 2.1 and I still have no signal with 3G but perfect with Edge. I guess I have to go the the Apple store:(

Same here. I get little to no 3G signal, but it won't revert to EDGE. It just says, "No Service" in spite of my strong EDGE signal availability.

? 2.1 minor fixes / enhancements ?

On a iPhone original 8gig model with the 2.1 update installed.

1) Seems that that back to back video-to-video playing in a playlist bug of the video slightly pausing while the music catches up when automatically moving from one video to another (like a playlist is supposed to do) is fixed. The subsequent videos in the playlist are no longer slightly pausing.
i.e. Metro Station Shake It video transitioning to Lady Gaga Just Dance video transitioning to Lloyd Women Around the World, etc.

2) Double tapping (or using the 'pointing at each other' arrows button) the video playback in portrait mode when the video is playing in a playlist seems to magnify the video a lot more than the 2.0 software. Magnification was always there in 2.0 and before with the 1.x series. Now it seems to magnify more. i.e. Metro Station Shake It video

3) Rotating the iPhone from portait to landscape when playing back a video in a playlist seems to be smoother. I detected a slight video pause when doing this in 2.0 when in 2.1 it doesn't slightly pause.

4) Video and/or audio playback does not pause anymore when docking and undocking to/from at least the iPhone Original dock. Have not tried this on wifie's 3G with the 3G dock nor either iPhone with the 2007 Universal Dock - all these docks have historically exhibited different behaviour.

5) My iPhone with 2.1 seems to be running warm. Not sure if this is all the updating of the 2.1, apps, and now video playback or if this is a symptom of the 2.1. Will keep monitoring.

6) Bug found. I have at least one duplicated calendar event that's duplicated on the iPhone but not in Outlook. This is corporate email Exchange server syncing turned on. Not sure what caused this. It may be confused since the meeting originator keeps sending updates (room changed, phone number changes, agenda changes, etc).

7) 'bug/nit' continues to occur in 2.1 as it did in 2.0 - when doing video playback via playlist, if you hit the home button, the video and audio stop. If just an audio track is playing in a playlist then it keeps playing when you hit home. This is unexpected since if you happen to have audio and videos mixed in a playlist, and you're playing audio and then hit home, the playlist continues to play and even music videos will play while on home if they come up in the playlist - you won't see the video, but the audio portion will play.

Downloaded it this morning and it in the middle of installation I got the error (6) message, saying that operation could not complete.

I tried everything Apple says to try (another USB port, reboot, reinstall iTunes, etc.) to no avail. I also spent 45 minutes on the phone with support to end up hearing the advice to go to a Genius Bar...

Meanwhile, I have a very expensive brick on my hands and had to return to my trusty 5-year old Nokia (which I hate)...

I was using iTunes 8 on an iMac Core Duo 24".

Among other things I tried:
- Restore on another Mac computer
- Restore on a PC
- Restore on iTunes 7.7 (PC)

All for the same result: phone is dead...

What pisses me off: is it so hard for Apple to program upgrades so that everything is transfered on the iPhone and checked *before* totally wiping out the working firmware and setting???

CJ

Maybe the problem is your phone itself, since not many people have had similar experiences to yours(including me).

Couldn't agree more.

im tired of people saying mms is outdated. you know what came before mms? text messages, and those are still around so the "outdated" comment is just people trying to say it ok for the iphone not to have it. its a feature every modern phone has, regardless if you use it or not others do and will continue to use it on other phones/networks. so please stop saying it outdated, you just sound like a fanboy sticking up for apple.

Preach on brotha......preach on....

I'm seeing significant 3G speed increases... My average result was 1.2Mbps, it's almost doubled with 2.1...

iphone_speed_091208.jpg

I agree. Before, on a good day, I was only getting on average about 500kbps, now I'm averaging about 1.5Mbs. So, I've about tripled. This is what the iPhone should have been back in July. Now that they've got stability fixed, perhaps they can start adding some new, fun features :)

nope..

If your phone has been jailbroken, Itunes will no upgrade your phone. One needs to get the image file, place the phone in DFU mode, and restore it manually.

i have jailbroken & unlocked. downloaded the update just fine, normally by connecting the iPhone. obviously haven't updated.

need the unlock.
:p

I'm sure you already know this, but using email, you can send MMS's to any phone... you just need to know the email address associated with the phone you're trying to send an MMS to.

e.g. 4155551212@vwpix.com for Verizon, etc.

Just sayin...

Right unfortunately many people aren't aware and its a pain to hafta look up each carriers email and I also know some people that cant even get those. Its annoying it should be easily implemented.

I am having the same problem. I am currently restoring my iphone and from what I can see on my iphone screen as it syncs i am getting 3 bars of 3g where before the restore it was 0, so ill let you know after its finished if it helped.

Cool, thanks! I hope it works for you (and then me when I try). :)

Does anyone else find it annoying when..

I know this isnt new to 2.1 update, but does any get frustrated when they are connected to a wifi network and they can't see whether they are on EDGE or 3g because the wifi network icon on the top is in the place of the Edge or 3g icon?? Is there a way to see what network you are on with wifi on?

For an accurate test of your 3G signal strength, and to see if the 2.1 update really does someting, other than just bump the bars up visually, put your iPhone into "Field Test Mode" prior to the update and then after the update. Example:

To do so, go to the number pad and type *3001#12345#* hit send.
Look at the numeic indicator next to your carrier logo in the upper left of the screen. The lower the number, the weaker the signal. Keep in mind that all numbers are actually - negative. The closer to 0 the better the signal. This is resulted from the carrier, not from Apple.

-75 gives all 5 bars of strength. Call quality is perfect.
-105 no bars, just barely hanging on to 3G. Call quality is sub par.

to exit field test mode, just hit your home button. Ther are a slew of other things in this mode that you can see, but unless you are a UMTS technician, most of it will be gibberish to you. This will really tell you what is going on behind the scenes of the signal bar.

that's cool! Thanks for that. My phone changes from -83 to -97 here in the middle of Manhattan.

I can use this function in my Itunes and see the genius icon in my iphone but still can not figure out how to use in the iphone. When I select a song and tap the screen I see the Genius Icon. I select it and get a message that says
"Genius playlists are not enabled. Use Itunes to enable Genius Playlists."

Can anybody lend me some guidance here?

I tried a lot of things including syncing over and over. In the end it boils down to this: you must copy some music (or playlist) over from iTunes to the iPhone and the genius feature will work. A lot of people auto-sync so it will work but I manually manage the music. I had to copy over a new song from iTunes and Genius worked. Hope this helps.

I have noticed that there are little circles and half circles by some of my videos and then there isn't any circle by some of them.

Who else is having issues with the gps when 3g is on? My friend and I are in the middle of PA and it says we're in the middle of Belmar, NJ

Trying to find.

Hey folks! I'm trying to find the setting to shut off the extra alerts for SMS text messages. It seems the new update alerts you two more times after the initial alert if you don't look at it. I thought it would have been under "Sounds", but it's not there. Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

After installing the update I notice the following:

  • Apps install very fast! It should be like that from the beginning...
  • Contacts App is fast. No delays...
  • SMS typing is also fast
  • I notice that the 3G signal has increased but could be better
  • Battery life...Well we will have to test it. I guess next week I will be able to say if it has improved
  • the iPod app is faster. Genious works very good
  • Safari is still buggy...I dont think it will ever get better...Maybe the webkit is the problem here. I tried sites that cause issues like www.eurosport.de and Safari becomes very very slow and unresponsive...and at the end closes! Apple has to improve here...
  • Mail.app is also faster

i always have full service now

i honestly have not seen my bars go down at all, its been full for a long time

I have some thoughts. But instead, I will be nice and tell you it is not a user configurable setting. It just happens. And it has been discussed.

dock accessories?

Does this let me use my iPhone with iPod dock accessories again? They used to work, then the last update broke compatibility. TALK ABOUT INCREDIBLY LAME FORCED COMPATIBILITY ISSUES. I get you Apple, you want people to keep buying iPods. But I have one, and I still sometimes need/want to plug my phone into a dock and hear some music.

And while I'm venting, does it fix the sluggish keyboard? Or the intermittent sound? As in, sometimes there are key clicks, sometimes there aren't.
