I surprised people aren't talking about the lack of Push for iPhone Apps. Apple promised it would be in this update and was until about a month ago when it was removed from beta. Yes the phone supports push email, but say for instant messaging with Mobile Chat, it logs you out when you close and App. Push would have allowed you to still receive IMs when not logged in. Are we positive its not included as promised?

They never ever said it would be in this update. They only said it'd probably be available in September. Last I checked, there is still two weeks + left in September. Even if it doesn't get released before the end of the month, they didn't pinky promise or send everyone an email saying that it would def be available. It is not hidden in 2.1 either. If it was there and functional, I'm pretty sure they'd let everyone know.

Wow I couldnt wait to get home so I decided to update anyways with a work computer and lose my content. Since I dont have my music and things on my work computer. But I clicked on backup and it actually did a backup with content and restored with updated OS and restored with all content. NOW if it functions well then finally its a star performance again.

That is new, it used to backup everything except pictures, music and movies.

Who else is getting "No Service" with 3G turned on?
I did. Just updated, shortly after reboot saw the message "No service"- Switches the phone off, than after 2 minutes on. Now I have from 3 to 5 bars of service in 3G, whether I had only 1 to 2 before the update. I hope it is not only the grafic what has been changed. :D

Maps now will function even if I have Location turned off
which is nice

Maps always functioned with location services off. it just didn't track you with GPS or cell tower triangulation. If maps just didn't work at all, that's a unique problem to your phone.

Just finished the process on my 2G iPhone. Very quick. Whole thing took less than 20 minutes. I'm most interested in messing around with the genius playlist thingy.

I skipped the 2.01 and 2.02 updates and now I'm glad I did. Now all I need is the push capability that'll hopefully be in the next update and I'll be sound as a pound.....

What about PUSH for apps?

okay now seriously....

Where is the background PUSH service? This should have been up months ago

AIM is kind of worthless without PUSH, as well with many other Apps.

Does ANYONE have a working PUSH service for there Apps?

? 2.1 minor fixes / enhancements ?
7) 'bug/nit' continues to occur in 2.1 as it did in 2.0 - when doing video playback via playlist, if you hit the home button, the video and audio stop. If just an audio track is playing in a playlist then it keeps playing when you hit home. This is unexpected since if you happen to have audio and videos mixed in a playlist, and you're playing audio and then hit home, the playlist continues to play and even music videos will play while on home if they come up in the playlist - you won't see the video, but the audio portion will play.

Related: when you "power off" the screen, video pauses but audio does not. I know this sounds like a good idea, but most of the video I "watch" is news shows (Daily, etc.) where the video is not all that interesting. An option would be nice...

I'm inclined to call this update "AWESOME" even though it should have been like this from the get-go. Good work, I think Apple has made up for all the hassles with this... Everything seems to be fixed now - at least for me. I am finally able to use my iPhone 3G like the old one :D

Technically it should, because the ALoD was there because apps were taking so long to install.

Now that they install faster, it should be fixed. As long as an application doesn't take what, more than two minutes someone said?

Well, it hasn't fixed mine, but what I did notice is there was the fix that worked sometimes when you hooked up your phones, then after 5 mins when the phone goes dim, then you restart it 3 times. It does it automatically for you. But I have let mine running doing this and it hasn't fixed it. :(

Does ANYONE have a working PUSH service for there Apps?
Nope. It will hopefully appear in 2.2 of more likely in 2.3. This pretty crappy, of course. But if you could not live without it, go buy Nokia Smartfone, they have the feature...

I have noticed that there are little circles and half circles by some of my videos and then there isn't any circle by some of them.

See attached

The half circles are for movies you already started watching, or "in progress"

iPhone 2.1 Update Stalling on Backup

Anyone else having a problem where the backup is taking 2+ hours before the update? I am still waiting here and getting angry.

I'm in Tigard, OR (Portland suburb) and the blue dot is right smack on top of my house...

Did you hard reset yet?

Dude did you ever got to houston. Maybe you didnt click on the eye icon on the bottom right and is display the last place you did locate. By default it doesnt start to locate where you are at. Click on the icon. Now if you did then take it to the store and have it checked out.

Who else is having issues with the gps when 3g is on? My friend and I are in the middle of PA and it says we're in the middle of Belmar, NJ

I think we all have days where we feel we are in the middle of Belmar, New Jersey...

If it's done downloading, click your iPhone in the devices list in the left column. You should see the update button on the main page.

sorry i meant i downloaded the file without itunes it kept saying 4 hrs to finish. I downloaded 2.1 off of here. Its finished downloading how do i get it into itunes to update phone???

Nice, just in time for Ike.
The extra battery life will come in handy if/when we lose our power (I live in Houston near downtown and there is a possibility that the eye will pass right over us!).

Why haven't you evacuated?
