Do you have to turn on sms alert reminders, or does it automatically do that now?
I couldn't find the option.

Anyone else having a problem where the backup is taking 2+ hours before the update? I am still waiting here and getting angry.

I'm at over 2 hours for the pre-install back-up and it's about 1/3 of the way complete. At this rate, I'll be able to use 2.1 tomorrow morning.

The other odd thing is that it is backing up without the phone being in sync mode.

Call me a noob. :)

But, what is all this negative numbers?
What's the purpose? What does it show and TEACH ME.

It is just the way the program works. the lower the negative number is, better reception(actually the higher the negative number is), if you understand. OK, if its -75, it is really good reception, but if it is -105 it is bad reception.:D

Wow. I can't believe how fast this thread filled up with comments. I guess people were really frustrated by the last update.

I don't have an iPhone, but I'm glad a lot of people are happy with the results.

If you want to power off-hold the power button in until the "power bar" appears, 5-8 seconds seems like.

As for bricking-no such thing-put it in DFU mode and restore...

I can't power down like normal...it just sits on home.

I let the power drain and then did the normal stuff and it seems to be ok now...trying the upgrade.

? 2.1 minor fixes / enhancements ?

On a iPhone original 8gig model with the 2.1 update installed.

1) Seems that that back to back video-to-video playing in a playlist bug of the video slightly pausing while the music catches up when automatically moving from one video to another (like a playlist is supposed to do) is fixed. The subsequent videos in the playlist are no longer slightly pausing.
i.e. Metro Station Shake It video transitioning to Lady Gaga Just Dance video transitioning to Lloyd Women Around the World, etc.

2) Double tapping (or using the 'pointing at each other' arrows button) the video playback in portrait mode when the video is playing in a playlist seems to magnify the video a lot more than the 2.0 software. Magnification was always there in 2.0 and before with the 1.x series. Now it seems to magnify more. i.e. Metro Station Shake It video

3) Rotating the iPhone from portait to landscape when playing back a video in a playlist seems to be smoother. I detected a slight video pause when doing this in 2.0 when in 2.1 it doesn't slightly pause.

4) Video and/or audio playback does not pause anymore when docking and undocking to/from at least the iPhone Original dock. Have not tried this on wifie's 3G with the 3G dock nor either iPhone with the 2007 Universal Dock - all these docks have historically exhibited different behaviour.

5) My iPhone with 2.1 seems to be running warm. Not sure if this is all the updating of the 2.1, apps, and now video playback or if this is a symptom of the 2.1. Will keep monitoring.

6) Bug found. I have at least one duplicated calendar event that's duplicated on the iPhone but not in Outlook. This is corporate email Exchange server syncing turned on. Not sure what caused this. It may be confused since the meeting originator keeps sending updates (room changed, phone number changes, agenda changes, etc).

7) 'bug/nit' continues to occur in 2.1 as it did in 2.0 - when doing video playback via playlist, if you hit the home button, the video and audio stop. If just an audio track is playing in a playlist then it keeps playing when you hit home. This is unexpected since if you happen to have audio and videos mixed in a playlist, and you're playing audio and then hit home, the playlist continues to play and even music videos will play while on home if they come up in the playlist - you won't see the video, but the audio portion will play.

CRITICAL UPDATE - I just took a 1 hour meeting away from my desk charger where my iPhone was not being charged during the meeting (12 noon - 1pm Mountain). And my iPhone battery drained to about 50% of the battery bar in that short amount of time. I think I maybe played a few seconds of a video, looked at one email, and brought up the macrumors page in Safari.

I have not had any battery issues before.

The back case seems a bit warm to the touch. And it seems that maybe an App is running in the background as I've encountered this situation before with app crashing on 1.x and 2.0.x before. Or it could be syning to email more often than before.

If this keeps up, I'm going to have to go back to 2.0.

This is a iPhone Original 8gig with 2.1

Will keep monitoring. I am shutting it down and rebooting to see if that clears it up.

Any other early word you all have on battery life when NOT CHARGING?

iTUNES 8.0 SUX, iPHONE 2.1 SUX

To say that I'm pissed would be an understatement.

I'm on my 3rd attempt to install iPhone 2.1 software.

iTUNES 8 has failed during backup (an hour later) TWICE NOW!

I really don't like having to FORCE-QUIT iTUNES or unplug my iPHONE, but when the software hangs for a half hour, I think I've given Apple enough of my time!

THIS IS RIDICULOUS.

APPLE IS TURNING INTO A REAL SCREWED UP COMPANY!

ADVICE: Wait for iTUNES 8.01 and iPHONE 2.1.1

The only good news is my iPhone wasn't BRICKED this time like the last update debacle, at least not yet. I'll post back when I get past the BACKUP stage!
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

why can i no longer see who my text messages are from? it used to have a name now it just says new text message? i dont understand.. i dont want the preview but i want the name...

I dont think you can. I think the whole point is if you say no preview it will inform that you have a message but not who or what it is. Should be an option to show the person but I doubt they do. And it makes sense in that if you dont want people knowing that you are getting a text message from someone in perticular. But apple should work on the show me, dont know me but show me who its from, not just notify not dont show any information.

What's so funny? Works great for me. The only problem is knowing which carrier to put after the @ sign.

Maury

Maury - I wasn't laughing at the suggested solution. It is very useful, and I personally use that method to send text messges to several ppl. I think you missed the humorous part of the quote from the original poster...I bolded it this time ;)
Dear retards who want MMS:

Take a picture. Email it to your friends PHONE NUMBER. They get it on their phone.

Love this update. Everything seems much better so far..

Only thing I think they could have done better is the location services stuff ! Why not have Google Maps ask if you just want to use Location services for this session and then when you quit Google Maps it switches it off again.

I agree whole-heartedly ONLY if you never jailbroken your phone in any shape manner or form. If you did then I dont really have much sympathy for you.

For an accurate test of your 3G signal strength, and to see if the 2.1 update really does someting, other than just bump the bars up visually, put your iPhone into "Field Test Mode" prior to the update and then after the update. Example:

To do so, go to the number pad and type *3001#12345#* hit send.
Look at the numeic indicator next to your carrier logo in the upper left of the screen. The lower the number, the weaker the signal. Keep in mind that all numbers are actually - negative. The closer to 0 the better the signal. This is resulted from the carrier, not from Apple.

-75 gives all 5 bars of strength. Call quality is perfect.
-105 no bars, just barely hanging on to 3G. Call quality is sub par.

to exit field test mode, just hit your home button. Ther are a slew of other things in this mode that you can see, but unless you are a UMTS technician, most of it will be gibberish to you. This will really tell you what is going on behind the scenes of the signal bar.

Here it is.:D:apple:

I haven't read through the whole thread so I don't know if this has been reported yet or not but I've noticed a pretty annoying change with podcast playback.

If you have more than 1 podcast from any given feed on your iphone and you play the latest one, when you finish it goes to the next one on the list instead of just stopping like it used to. So now when I finish playing the podcast that was released today it then thinks "hey, now you want to listen to the one released last week. right? RIGHT?!"

I did. Just updated, shortly after reboot saw the message "No service"- Switches the phone off, than after 2 minutes on. Now I have from 3 to 5 bars of service in 3G, whether I had only 1 to 2 before the update. I hope it is not only the grafic what has been changed. :D

My boss has a 8gig 3G model and did the update this morning. He seems to had temporarily lost 3G then Edge went away, then No Service.

Then he shut down and rebooted his iPhone and now everythings working normally again - 3G, etc

(I have a 8gig Original model and did not see that issue. We sit 3 offices from each other and have the same basic coverage reception.)

The only good news is my iPhone wasn't BRICKED this time like the last update debacle, at least not yet.

Your phone was BRICKED and, yet, you're still using it now? Doesn't sound like it was BRICKED after all.

Still, it sucks you're having this trouble. I'd be pist, too. Good luck.

I am outside of the scope of problems many people have experienced with the iPhone 3G - I never had long backups (most were within 15-20 seconds), my 3G reception was relatively clear-cut, and I've only ever had 3-4 app crashes total.

I will say, though, that this update makes everything (and there's no better word for it) snappier. After the 5-10 second 2.1 download (I love internet speeds here at school), I've had no lag between contact info and SMS, better reception, overall better finger response, my backup was about 5 seconds long... I'd say this was the update everyone was looking forward towards.

One anomaly, though. I read that Airplane mode being on might help for the update process. Seeing as I'm a popular guy, I did that to avoid interruptions anyway. After it was finished, the first thing I did was open up Settings to turn off Airplane mode and mess around... only to see a new option between "Wi-Fi" and "Fetch New Data" named "Carrier" with the logo of the "Phone" option lower down the page, but grayscaled. (This was before I'd connected back to the network, obviously, as airplane mode was still on). Naturally curious, I tapped it, and it said something to the extent of "Available networks", where I got a similar-to-SMS message popup saying "No networks available" (again, airplane mode). As soon as I turned off Airplane mode and AT&T kicked in, this option flat out disappeared.

Anyone else seen this before?

Oops

I forgot to unhide my icons with BossPrefs before commencing the update so now I have a ton of hidden icons, and no launcher. Is there any way to remedy this? I tried doing a full restore (with backup), and I still have hidden icons. I'd like to not have to restore without backup, but will do so if necessary.

But before the 2.1 update i could see who sent the texts, can anyone tell me why that no longer is the case?

You are flat wrong buddy! I have compared db of AT&T HSDPA reception between the iPhone 3G and an HTC TyTN/AT&T 8525—which is not known to have THAT GOOD of reception—and the results were staggering; I don't remember the exact results but the iPhone was <-100 while the TyTN was >-80. Don't make unbacked claims; while at&t's 3G network is far from perfect, the iPhone is very much to blame here.

The TyTN is an Edge phone...
