Wow.

Very fast, now. And five full bars at my desk, where before I only had trace service, if any.

Pleased customer.

One tip: after you download, do a hard reboot (or whatever it's called). Turn your phone off and on. Before I did that, Safari kept telling me it couldn't get onto the internet.

They never ever said it would be in this update. They only said it'd probably be available in September. Last I checked, there is still two weeks + left in September. Even if it doesn't get released before the end of the month, they didn't pinky promise or send everyone an email saying that it would def be available. It is not hidden in 2.1 either. If it was there and functional, I'm pretty sure they'd let everyone know.

Steve, up on stage in front of the entire Macworld crowd in January, did in fact promise us Application Push support in September. If they fail to deliver, it's just one more failure in a long list of failures. Apple's inability to hit promised dates with products that are stable and production ready has been tragic. The fact that it took them 3 months to release this update is testament to this. We all love Apple on this forum, or else we wouldn't be here, but they've really been screwing up lately -- and I feel they owe all 3G owners who purchased a phone pre-2.1 an apology (maybe even iTunes App Store Credit? or another form of compensation?)

I had the same..Just installing now..finally! I guess patience is needed :)

Thanks. It helps to know someone else is there too. Doesn't help that I keep getting calls I need to take. This should have been done forever ago. Have fun with the update.

I've noticed that since I updated to the newest version today, auto lock no longer works.

If I leave the phone on the home screen (or any screen) it will stay on forever. I've checked the auto lock settings. Set it to 2 minutes, nothing. set it to 1 minute, nothing. It always stays on and drains my battery.

Anyone else experiencing this "feature?"

HELP: What's the best way to load update?

Hi,

I am using an 8GB 3G that still has the original V2.0 firmware... about 35 Apps and my wife's contact / calender information.

Am I best synching my 3g to iTunes 8.0 and removing all my applications before running the upgarde to V2.1 and afterwards re-synching and re-installing the applications? Also... will the upgrade wipe my wife's contact and calender data?

What's the best way to do this?

well throw me on the list for dramatic increase in reception.. Now I have 5 bars at home when I previously only had 1 - 2 bars:)

And like some other people I don't like the new 3G icon... Bit whatever it's not gonna kill me. :)

Great Update! NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!

Let's see now! Just what iPhone was missing after 14 months on the market, repeat alerts for SMS messages, bug fixes, and fewer crashes! Lightning fast backups, DEFINITELY a plus! My 3G iPhone now does a full backup in less than 1 minute, even with over 1200 songs, 5 movies, and 42 applications! Of the latter I am truly impressed! Who needs MMS, stereo bluetooth, a NATIVE documents viewer application, a decent set of default ringtones, or turn by turn audible GPS? Yet ANOTHER lackluster software update for a SPECTACULAR device! What a letdown!

Also, I think the Genius playlist is actually exteremly useful. I had my doubts, but am very happy with it. The Genius fetures within iTunes that shows missing music, etc, however still feels like a gimmick to get you to purchase more music. Comes across as more 'profitable' for Apple than 'useful' to users.

The Genius playlist is a good start, and one hopes it will get more useful as more users contribute. As of this moment in time Pandora is a better method for finding new music, though, in my opinion.

I think Genius could have value, though, in that at best it could perform the function that radio used to (back in the day when radio was still decent), which is to get you into new music beyond your own collection. We'll see.

Genius Playlists appear to be not working on the iPhone...

They haven't really made this work with the iPhone... Once you figure out that you not only have to sync your iPhone with itunes to get genius playlists to work, but you also have to make sure that new music gets copied on so that genius will be "enabled", then it still doesn't work because it complains that "This song does not have enough related songs to create a Genius Playlist".
I am trying to to make Genius playlists for songs that I can see in iTunes that it makes perfectly fine genius lists for, and also most of the songs it picks are also present on my iPhone...
Not all of my music fits on the phone, I just have a smart playlist that syncs with the phone that keeps 12 gigs of my most recently added music synced to the phone.
Frustrating, I was excited about this feature! Anyone else having luck with it?

No, actually it wasn't Steve. Go watch it again. And September isn't over yet. Not that i expect it in that time, but anything could happen.

it's just one more failure in a long list of failures. Apple's inability to hit promised dates with products that are stable and production ready has been tragic.

Yes, we're all aware of how well everyone else in the industry is on this one...

The fact that it took them 3 months to release this update is testament to this.

Ok, now I think you're just being a whiner. There's been three releases in that time period, a record that I don't see anyone else in the industry even remotely coming close to. Furthermore, those releases were simple to download and install, whereas many many other systems make you jump through hoops, or go through your carrier who might not even even have the upgrades for weeks, if ever.

Sorry, this is absolutely not reasonable, Apple's response has been far, far superior to anyone else in the industry. Looking over the comments here, 2.1 looks like it's an amazing upgrade that came out after a couple of months, whereas my last phone was still crap two years later.

Did you really expect a slew of new features when there were so many major usability bugs to be fixed?

Several of you have said your reception is better. Is it better for the Edge iPhones, for the 3G iPhones, or both? Thank you.

im getting reception on original edge iphone in my place where i never got it before. texting going through quicker too, but who really knows

What about the phone?

I've seen pages and pages of people talking about numbers and bars where signal strength is concerned -- but has anyone actually made or gotten a phone call on their iPhone and seen whether the calls drop as much as before the update?

help

why can i no longer see who my text messages are from? it used to have a name now it just says new text message? i dont understand.. i dont want the preview but i want the name...

HOLY COW, my first backup (with 35apps) took what, 25-30sec?! That's unbelievable considering what it was before.

Well yes, he did say it would be available in September, but that was before all of these bugs cropped up with 2.0. Again, there is still 2 weeks left in September, so it still can arrive on time. No reason for people to be freaking out about it not being in 2.1. However, Steve giving a time frame does not make a promise. Remember when they gave the original release of Leopard as June or July (don't remember exactly when), and then announced that it would be delayed. It got pushed back because of the iPhone getting prioritized. In this case, they prioritized the bugs that cropped up after the Macworld conference before the new featured like Push. If they had rushed push out for 2.1, then there likely would have been more bugs and everyone would be complaining that they shouldn't have added new features when they couldn't even get the old or current ones to work correctly. As far as an apology or monetary compensation for pre-2.1 3G purchasers, thats just unreasonable. How many times have you bought software or even sometimes hardware that had several bug fixes or firmware updates after the initial release. You don't get credits or money for that, why would Apple be any different?

Its like how they say to to avoid the first model year of a completely new car, because there are bound to be unforeseen problems or fit and finish issues that crop up and that can only be found with consumer usage. They issue recalls, repair things under warranty, and the next model year they fix the problems. It may not be great, but its just how mass-production works, for any product, especially electronics. A lot goes into them and its not easy to make revisions or create new products once a year, for any company. So yes, it has sucked that the problems with the iPhone even existed, but they are mostly fixed now and there isn't much else any one can do about it.
