Whoa, anyone noticed that with the update when you update apps, they no longer get moved to the first screen (or the nearest empty space), they now stay in the place you put them!

still no 3G service here in Chicago!
Un-freakin' believable!!

I'm sure happy to be paying for a service I can't use.

Success

Overall my iPhone performs much better than before the update. The backup in iTunes is much faster, looking up names in address book is faster, overall it just seems zippier.

However, the "NYTimes" app that's notorious for crashes keeps crashing on me. Not as much as before, but still...

So all in all, I'm pretty happy with this update.

 moronically borked my phone by switching to VMWare Fusion with an XP instance running whilst doing the upgrade.

XP 'grabbed' the phone from OSX mid-update, had to restore to revive it, then guess what? 'Your back-up is not compatible with the iPhone version you are attempting to restore'! Seems my phone got far enough through the back-up to look like the newer OS version...also kind of weird for apple to make back-ups version dependent, back-up is surely something you want point update neutral?!?

My backup is still taking ages, is this because I opted to cancel the backup before installing 2.1?
Or is the 1st backup slow and then it's fixed after?

I haven't read through the whole thread so I don't know if this has been reported yet or not but I've noticed a pretty annoying change with podcast playback.

If you have more than 1 podcast from any given feed on your iphone and you play the latest one, when you finish it goes to the next one on the list instead of just stopping like it used to. So now when I finish playing the podcast that was released today it then thinks "hey, now you want to listen to the one released last week. right? RIGHT?!"

Sounds like they recategorized podcast playback to be more like a playlist playback - playlists keep on playing the next selection automatically (next or shuffle, etc). Do you have shuffle options now in Podcast playback?

They seem to have been poking around in the playback code as early as 2.0 release as with music videos and audio tracks in playlists functionality seemed to have been changed with 2.0 as opposed to 1.x releases. For these types it seems better to keep playing the next song/video - you don't want the music/video to stop and have to manually intervene just to play the next one. And some podcasts are more apt contentwise to playback one after another automatically - like the short Comedy Central video podcasts. But I do see your point - like most audio podcasts or longer video podcasts - you may want to be asked to play the next one or not. They should make it an option to continuously play or stop after each.

Freaking Forever

I'm at over 2 hours for the pre-install back-up and it's about 1/3 of the way complete. At this rate, I'll be able to use 2.1 tomorrow morning.

The other odd thing is that it is backing up without the phone being in sync mode.

I am in the exact same boat. I have been backing up for about 3 hours now, and I am only 2/3 of the way finished backing up. It has taken about 45 minutes to go across the "..." at the end of "iPhone." I have places to go and things to see...

Contacts lag is gone!

Keyboard lag is gone!

More 3G bars in more places!

No dropped calls yet!

...wait. isn't this what we were supposed to have from 2.0.0 ?

SMS notification question

I am at work and am unable to try out the new software. Can someone tell me, with regard to the changes to SMS notification, whether it is now possible to tell the iPhone NOT to drop the message on top of whatever I am doing. For example, if I am in the middle of a telephone call on my iPhone and I get an SMS message, it displays the message until I tell it to either "close" or "reply". Does the new SMS notification stuff give me the option of turning that off so that it doesn't interrupt other things?

Thank you for your time and reply.

ATE my iPhone

I have a first gen iPhone. I tried to update my iPhone today to 2.1 and it totally killed my iPhone. it's not hardware issue either. It's the update. I had to restore it by holding down alt and finding the first 2.0 update that I downloaded from Macrumors. It now works, but it won't let me use the "backup" restore because it ate that too. It says I need the newest version.

Nope, I didn't see any new options. They changed how they displayed the podcast information which I liked, but yea like you said it'd be nice to have an option somewhere to stop playback after a podcast ends. :(

But before the 2.1 update i could see who sent the texts, can anyone tell me why that no longer is the case?

Maybe you don't have an existing conversation going with this person? If not, then it won't be able to tell who it came from.

I think it also tries to search the senders phone number part of the incoming SMS and match it to you Contacts list.

I just had a friend send me a text on my 2.1 from his 2.1 - I had an existing dormant SMS conversation going with him in my SMS "Text Messages" listing - and the incoming SMS notification popup did say his name in slightly bolder text at the top of the popup. This seems to not have changed from 2.0.x

LMAO...Not much of a contribution, but thanks for the laugh.

I have noticed much better responsiveness throughout contacts/keyboard/etc. It still lags a bit when loading contacts at first (which I would expect initially), but once opened the lag within the app seems very much improved.

Overall, I'm glad Apple spent time improving performance and fixing bugs before releasing more possibly problematic/buggy features. When does 2.2 arrive? :p

Also, I think the Genius playlist is actually exteremly useful. I had my doubts, but am very happy with it. The Genius fetures within iTunes that shows missing music, etc, however still feels like a gimmick to get you to purchase more music. Comes across as more 'profitable' for Apple than 'useful' to users.

No - this is actually still the same. Over all this is so much more stable.

I'm going to call foul on this. When I was on vacation in Chicago two weeks ago, I had 1-2 bars of 3G service throughout the city (would have been 5 bars if there were no buildings in the city), and when I was in the surrounding suburbs, I had 3-5 bars. I've read other comments on MacRumors from people that live in Chicago that claim to have 3G. I think you need to take your phone into the Apple Store for a diagnostic test.

I forgot to mention. They did some changes to the media information lists (music, video, podcasts, playback lists, etc).

Artist and Title seem to be both listed on separate lines and with different font styles.

For example Music Videos:

In the Ayer
Flo Rida

Shake It
Metro Station

Good Life
Kanye West

Where before I believe this was displayed on one single line - won't be able to verify until I get home and see wifie's 3G still with 2.0.x

You should go to the Apple Store and talk to them.
Maybe they'll claim your old phone is junk and if they don't have an original to give you, maybe they'll give you a 3G.

The AirBook Concept

Anyone know how to get a direct link?

Odd situation. I'm using the single USB port on my Macbook Air for internet and if I unplug it to plug in the iPhone I can't check for updates because theres no internet lol.

As its name implies, the MBA is meant to use the "air", i.e. WiFi and clouds. Not having WiFi defeats the whole purpose of that particular notebook computer.

That said, I now finally have a full 5 bars in my home, 3G ATT signal. My first call was as good as anything I ever had with Verizon. I'm incredibly pleased.

Contacts loading and scrolling are fine, finally. Even loading and scrolling web pages using WiFi is great and using 3G it's very good indeed.

Now, how about fixing Mobileme (I've been a Mac.com subscriber for several years) so that my calendar subscription, just one, will sync through the cloud and my wife and I can make entries that don't conflict?

The stock is down over 20% since I bought it, but I have renewed faith that when the time comes for my wife (I'll be long gone) to open her IRA's that investment will be worth a small fortune (in 20+ years).

The good thing is that Apple seems to have ironed out most of the bugs with 2.0 and the 3G iPhone. So from now on, they will hopefully focus on new features.

Lets hope that they will deliver the push notification in a short time. I would also like to see features as MMS, more Bluetooth services, videorecording etc.

Your phone was BRICKED and, yet, you're still using it now? Doesn't sound like it was BRICKED after all.

Still, it sucks you're having this trouble. I'd be pist, too. Good luck.

Good point. I just caught another guy saying there has never been 3G service in a city (Chicago) that I have had 5 bars of 3G in myself. I think there are a lot of Windows Vista fans on here right now trying to scare people into not updating.

I have a 1st Gen Original iPhone 8gig as well. Update worked flawlessly this morning. I was on 2.0.2 - what version did you upgrade from?

I make it a policy to "download only" the update and then install it in case there's network issues or something.

Remember that the iPhone 1st gen original firmware is DIFFERENT than the 3G firmware. If you downloaded from a direct link or a website or some kind of share site, you may have downloaded the 3G version. A lot of people pass around the 3G version and don't really say it's for 3G only. Safer to get it from the automatic service in iTunes when available update is recognized.

2.1, so far, has been great. The lag on my phone is gone, which was my biggest issue. But who knows what else is to come. The EDGE icon is different as well????

does this update support battery life with 1st gen iPhone?

I was one of the first to update. I'm going on 86 hours of usage right now.

just kidding.

If you have all of your important data such as address book, calendar etc. on your desktop, you may want to look into getting rid of the previous backups.
user/library/applicationsupport/mobilesync/backup is where your backups are stored. You could always delete those, reset your phone do the update.

Good luck.
