Able to adjust music while using an app

I'm pretty sure this wasn't in 2.0.2 because it always bothered me.
You can now adjust your music that is playing while using a third party app. I know you were able to do it in the included apps, but i think this is new for third party apps.

On my iPhone it doesn't show my phone number above the search. Strange.

Make sure you're in your contact list. On the Mac Address book automatically enters your name which it gets from your registration. But the Contacts on the iPhone don't seem to pick it up when syncing.

It's always worked, for all apps.

Very professional, thanks for the compilation and info.

Honestly, the most useful change to me is the Mail tapping, I really needed that it was getting irritating for long chains or the majority of the html messages I get.

I'm not sure if this has been posted, but Apple's fixed the grammar on the App Store when all the apps are up to date.

It used to say "All Apps Are Up-To-Date." (hypenated with period), which is grammatically incorrect and always annoyed me as a card-carrying grammar nazi :p

Actually, it was right the first time. "Up-to-date" is a phrasal adjective that is always hyphenated.

I'm an editor. :)

I'm not sure this is a new feature, but in the iPod when your playing a song in portrait mode(cure you can go "back" by swiping your finger across the album art (center of screen) from left to right (BIG RED ARROW). It works the same as if you pressed the "Left Arrow" in the upper left-hand corner of the screen (small filled in red arrow). It brings you back to the previous screen (second picture).

thats like really cool!!! ( edit: even if it's not a new feature )

i hate(ed) to always have to press that little arrow!!

much easier that way!:D

AM/PM Display

I finally got AM/PM to show on the locked screen, but it took a while. It displayed after the first couple tries but then I rebooted my iPhone again and it disappeared. Had to do the 24-hour/12-hour setting process all over again. Anyone else?

Has anyone tried using the old iphone power adapter with the 3G iphone? I feel like its not charging the phone fast enough after upgrading to 2.1 firmware. Its almost feels like charging over USB.

Am I the only one?

I'm not sure if this is 2.1 specific or just 2.0 but if you previewng a song in iTunes store and tap next 10 songs then the preview will continue playing. It used to cut out after tapping 10 next songs.

On a iPhone original 8gig model with the 2.1 update installed.

Other differences between 2.0.2 and 2.1

1) Seems that back-to-back video-to-video playing in a playlist bug of the video slightly pausing while the music catches up when automatically moving from one video to another (like a playlist is supposed to do) is fixed. The subsequent videos in the playlist are no longer slightly pausing.
i.e. Metro Station Shake It video transitioning to Lady Gaga Just Dance video transitioning to Lloyd Women Around the World, etc.

2) Double tapping (or using the 'pointing at each other' arrows button) the video playback in portrait mode when the video is playing in a playlist seems to magnify the video a lot more than the 2.0.2 software. Magnification was always there in 2.0.2 and before with the 1.x series. Now it seems to magnify more. i.e. Metro Station Shake It video

3) Rotating the iPhone from portait to landscape when playing back a video in a playlist seems to be smoother. I detected a slight video pause when doing this in 2.0.2 when in 2.1 it doesn't slightly pause.

4) Video and/or audio playback does not pause anymore when docking and undocking to/from at least the iPhone Original dock. Have not tried this on wifie's 3G with the 3G dock nor either iPhone with the 2007 Universal Dock - all these docks have historically exhibited different behaviour.

Sometimes now with 2.1 vs 2.0.2, docking in a 3rd party device such as DLO Home Dock (original and second generation versions of the dock) automatically starts a song in the playlist. Not sure how if figures this out, sometimes it's just the first song in my entire library alphabetically. This part of the playback-in-a-dock seems like a new bug. I don't think in 2.0.2 I saw this, and I use that same dock all the time.

5) Bug I think I found. I have at least one duplicated calendar event that's duplicated on the iPhone but not in Outlook. This is corporate email Exchange server syncing turned on. Not sure what caused this. It may be confused since the meeting originator keeps sending updates (room changed, phone number changes, agenda changes, etc).

6) 'bug/nit' continues to occur in 2.1 as it did in 2.0 - when doing video playback via playlist, if you hit the home button, the video and audio stop. If just an audio track is playing in a playlist then it keeps playing when you hit home. This is unexpected since if you happen to have audio and videos mixed in a playlist, and you're playing audio and then hit home, the playlist continues to play and even music videos will play while on home if they come up in the playlist - you won't see the video, but the audio portion will play.

7) Bug I think I found. MS Corporate Exchange Server with PUSH turned on on the iPhone causes battery life to diminish very very rapidly (full charge to 10% in 2.5 hours of doing "nothing") - we're trying to determine if this is Email, Contacts or Calendar related. We think this is a special circumstance since other 3G iPhones we know of that don't have Corporate Exchange Server configured don't show this issue. This bug is duplicated with two different iPhones - my iPhone original with 2.1 and my boss's 3G with 2.1.

Several other forums and websites have people trying to figure this battery issue cause out, so we're not the only ones it seems.

I have all 3 pushed from Exchange on my iPhone, and I have never seen that issue. Nobody else I know using Exchange push has seen it either, including a mix of Exchange 2003 and 2007.

Has had no negative effect on my iPhone with an Exchange (2007) push account set up. However, not syncing Contacts or Calendar over the air, just Mail.

Text messages with links now have an arrow next to them with the option to add a contact or append to existing contact. Also works formultiple links within a text message.

I dunno if anyone noticed this but I can delete video podcasts from my ipod now. I all these fast lane daily and geek brief podcasts. I just swiped and the delete tab came up.

Sweet. Now, can they add that feature to the songs as well. I like putting tons of music on my ipod and start trimming it down to good songs and delete all the crap.

also, I wish apple would recognize 3g as high speed video source and give us high quality YOUTUBE instead of the crappy one.

that delete feature has been there a while, since 1.4 i think!!!!

Another undocumented bug fixed in 2.1

Apple corrected an annoying bug regarding the address book, regarding pauses in number dialing ("," character). For example, calling an extension like (123) 555-1212,3435

Prior 2.1, entries like these would not call when pressed in the address book, but was working through the phone application (in which you selected address book). In the phone application it was working, but directly in the address book from the home screen it did nothing when selected (it would not call).

So, thanks Apple for that bugfix.

Is this new in 2.1 - I never came across it before?

In your email Inbox, or the SMS conversations list, skim your finger from left to right (or right to left, even!) on an item to bring up a red "Delete" button for that message. Very useful shortcut!

Before the iPhone even came out, they had iPhone commercials with ppl doing this on the iPhone. It was one of those cool hip features.

I've noticed that when a call drops - when attached to my bluetooth car kit, instead of the screen which says Call Failed with a big green Call Back button, it now just pops up a Call Failed message and when I unlock the screen, it automatically calls the person back.

Not a great feature as now I have to end the call before I can do anything else!

I don't know exactly when that started, but this has been there prior to 2.1. It also works the same if you have the headphones attached. I live in NYC and everytime I drive over the Brooklyn Bridge, my call gets dropped. So I have a good amount of experience with dropped calls (thanks AT&T).

For #2, I didn't notice any difference in magnification. I viewed the same video before and after the update, same exact magnification. For #3, I have never been able to play a video in portrait mode. Are you sure about this?

Text messages with links now have an arrow next to them with the option to add a contact or append to existing contact. Also works formultiple links within a text message.

Yea I've seen that prior to 2.1. I don't know when exactly this started happening (I think since 1.4) but I know it's been happening for a while.

It actually says "All Apps Up-to-date." Without the "Are". lol

I'm still running the 2.02 firmware, so if you need me to compare something, holla!

SoundID SM100 BT Working Again

My BT Headset stopped working with voicemail when I bought my new iphone 3G. I thought they took that feature out for everyone. I didn't know it only was certain headsets. I missed listening to voicemails on my headset. I felt stupid holding my phone up to one ear with my headset in the other. Anyway its working again with 2.1

Why? Why? Why???

Ok.. So I am updating now, and I am thrilled about most of these "fixes" to the phone... By the way this is a GREAT thread. I still have one MAJOR complaint. I have been an iPhone user since day 1. Literally, I waited in line for 5 hours for the first and another 6 for the 3G... I got both on the day they came out, and have complained about this since day 1.

Why is there no landscape keyboard in the SMS or email applications???

This makes absolutely no sense to me. They have the ability to do it because they put it in the safari app. But to me this makes no sense. Honestly how much typing does one do in Safari? I mean yes you do some occasional posting and blah blah blah.... But come on think of how much typing we do in Email and SMS. It would be SO SO SO SO SO much easier to do it on landscape keyboard.

I love you apple, but COME ON!!! WHY? WHY? WHY????

To get the am/pm indicator to display, set the time back to 24hr and reboot the phone. Switch it back to 12hr (the am/pm mode should appear in the top menu bar at this point). Reboot the phone again.

If the indicator doesn't appear at this stage, repeat the above steps a couple of times until it does!

this worked for me. thanks.
