Is this new in 2.1 - I never came across it before?

In your email Inbox, or the SMS conversations list, skim your finger from left to right (or right to left, even!) on an item to bring up a red "Delete" button for that message. Very useful shortcut!
Seriously? C'mon, this was in v1.0.

am/pm indicator in standby mode (UK timezone)

• You can now display the AM/PM on the lock screen, if you're using the 12-hour clock.
Note: This function, for some reason, does not appear on everyones phones. Some 'upgraded' phones show the AM/PM indicator when set to 12-hour, but some don't. However, most 'clean installs' of 2.1 will show the AM/PM indicator. (Credit to Kardashian).

To get the am/pm indicator to display, set the time back to 24hr and reboot the phone. Switch it back to 12hr (the am/pm mode should appear in the top menu bar at this point). Reboot the phone again.

If the indicator doesn't appear at this stage, repeat the above steps a couple of times until it does!

Exchange setup adds a separate Domain field

I found a minor update to the Exchange setup which I have not seen reported; in version 2.0 you had to enter the userid as "domain\userid", in 2.1 they have created a separate field for domain which makes it more intuitive for users to enter their credentials. The downside, they still don't have autodiscover working 100%, you still need to enter the server name in step 2 of the process.

Think I've just found another one... Double tapping (the standard gesture for zooming) didn't used to work in the Mail application. The only way to zoom into content (eg. a HTML page inside an email) was to pinch outwards.

That's now been fixed. Double tapping to zoom now works in Mail.

Nice catch! I get several emails per day from work that required zooming. Not being able to double-tap always bothered me.

I don't either. I believe it is because our network operator hasn't downloaded personalisation data to our SIM. I got a 'default' SIM when I purchased my 3G and then transferred an existing number to it, but it doesn't appear that they updated the SIM with my number data. If I can be bothered, I'll ask my provider to update the SIM and see if this resolves the missing number issue.

I've just spoken with O2 (network provider here in the UK) and they say this is not an available feature of the iPhone outside of the USA & Canada (I waited while they checked with 'Apple'). I've read elsewhere that people on O2 DO have their number showing, so it appears the network/Apple don't know their own supported products (who'd have thought?!).

Apple have covered this issue here.

I think that unless the network are prepared to educate themselves and resolve this, the only way to get an absent number to show is to program the SIM in a capable handset (I read elsewhere that the Razr can do it).

If anyone else knows, we're all ears!

I believe this hasn't been said before but there are now 3D building in Map's. Right now I can only find it in San Fran, but I bet Google has plans to push it out to other big cities as well.

LOL..

I love how people are arguing with me when this bug is beyond well documented.

I didn't fail anything.

I know what my iPod was doing and why people continue to argue otherwise is beyond me.

There are two different behaviors depending on whether a song is play or not. If a song is playing and you go back to the springboard and check your ringer volume it will display the songs volume, but when the phone rings it will have the volume you set it to earlier. If you start a song playing and then change the volume, stop the song and go to the springboard you're ringer volume will be set to wherever you originally had it. I'm not sure when/if this changed. It may always have been this way.

SVG support in mobile Safari

I haven't seen it being mentioned in this thread, and I haven't seen it being mentioned on any other site, but mobile Safari now (partially) supports SVG, this looks like a quite important new feature to me.

SMS Alerts

I just noticed that if you receive an SMS, it will alert you intermittently until you interact with the phone. Very cool! This was a complaint I had with 1.x

AM/PM not showing up

I simply enable 24-Hour Time and rebooted the iPhone. I then disabled 24-Hour Time. Now, AM/PM shows up.

Thank you for all the contributions. I have added everyone's find to the original post (I think, anyway) :p.
Let me know if I havent.

I don't think that would be a iPhone firmware related change - that is more of Google's side.

Thanks for all the comments again, and thank you MacRumors for the stickie and the link on the main site!

To add to the list...

Maybe this is already here but:

If you have Chrysler, Dodge, or Jeep vehicle with U-Connect (bluetooth hands free cell), it now works as well. Originally the iPhone 2.0 OS update killed it, and/or made it work intermittently. I can confirm that it now works great again.

I'll add it now. Ty.

When you say "the iPod App," are you talking about the iPod that came installed on the phone? When I double tap during a song, the album or playlist comes up and not the lyrics. Are you talking about the iPod or some App that you downloaded from the App store?
thank you. :)

Yes, since it is an App, and its name is iPod, it is iPod App. I have a large number of songs with lyrics, and prior to 2.1, you had to double tap on the album art while playing to display the lyrics, and a single click would just bring up the progress bar. Now if you have lyrics and want the progress bar, they both appear.

I always only had to tap once for lyrics, both the progress bar and lyrics would show up after one tap.

This is a bit obvious but a new feature in 2.1 is being able to create more than 1 playlist at one time on the iPhone. You used to be able to create a On-the-Go Playlist and thats it. Now you can create as many Genius playlists as you want and in addition to that 1 On-the-Go playlist.

I know you can edit On-the-Go but you can only have 1 On-the-Go at a time, so I think multiple playlists is technically a new feature, but only multiple Genius playlists.

Tell me about it. It used to go like this...

Double tap > Swear at it under my breath > Double tap again > Realise for the 300th time that Mail hadn't been programmed like every other app > Pinch out

This update, or the last?

When I'm in the keyboard function, double-clicking the "Shift" (upward arrow) button causes the caps to lock. It'll turn bright blue. Nice.

Duh (said toward myself). Yeah, I vaguely remember exploring the settings of my phone after the update and seeing this and enabling it. Sorry.

Now, if anyone can figure out how to disable the spell check on the iPhone because it's really costing me a lot more keystrokes to unfix something I intended to be a certain way - invariably, when I do "w/", it tries to change it to something else. So annoying.

I've noticed that when a call drops - when attached to my bluetooth car kit, instead of the screen which says Call Failed with a big green Call Back button, it now just pops up a Call Failed message and when I unlock the screen, it automatically calls the person back.

Not a great feature as now I have to end the call before I can do anything else!
