iPhone 2.2 Hidden Features: Google Street View, Emoji, Auto-Correction Off

Because they already knew those features weren't included but still went ahead and bought the phone but now complain about it, makes no sense.

I seem to recall that Apple suggested regular OS updates for the iPhone back when the first generation phone was released. So, you are correct in that people bought into the iPhone knowing that it was missing features. However, they bought into it hoping that these OS updates would include them. With each OS update that comes and goes missing these features, people are becoming more and more upset. Doesn't seem particularly unusual to me. People "invested" in the iPhone, and, for some, that "investment" isn't paying off.

That's the best you've got in return? No WiFi? I have no idea why the Storm has no WiFi (or if it definitely doesn't have it). Don't care. Not getting the Storm. However, I can also be big enough (and not take it personally) to acknowledge that RIM makes its share of mistakes, and for those that would want WiFi on this particular model, I can understand when they become angry that it doesn't have it.

Besides, not having WiFi doesn't particularly cripple the phone, now does it? 3G/EDGE/GPRS still give connections to the outside world. Certain missing features on the iPhone do cripple it, however, and keep it from being a much, much better device. Apple's inability to keep to their own deadlines doesn't particularly help, of course.

The particular BlackBerry model I am getting next does have WiFi, and 3G/EDGE/GPRS, plus GPS, yadda yadda yadda. It doesn't have a touchscreen. For me, that's perfect. I don't want a touchscreen keyboard. If Apple would make an iPhone device with a physical keyboard, I might think about the phone again. As I said earlier, I like the idea of the iPhone, but its current implementation is too much flash and not enough substance. It's currently a "wow, look at me" phone. It can be so much more.

The iPhone failed me one too many times at work, and because my phone calls at work are critical, I can't have the phone fail. And to be clear, I'm talking about failures when doing such tasks as, oh... answering the dang phone.

So, I'm sorry that it seems I have hurt your feelings, but the reality is that the iPhone has a ways to go to be a serious phone. It's a second-to-none media device and internet tablet, but not such a good phone. On that note, maybe you can answer me this: why has Apple still not implemented stereo bluetooth on the iPhone/iPod Touch? The BlackBerry can do it, as can many other media-centric devices. Irony here is that the BlackBerry hasn't been considered a media-centric device, and yet has had this ability for quite a while now. The iPhone, with its arguably better media capabilities? Nope. Not possible.
Because the Blackberry doesn't have every single feature that everybody wants like the iphone, I mentioned wifi and you are here dismissing it like it's irrelevant but it's important to me just like the features you mentioned about the iphone may not be important to me. I have used a blackberry and they have their faults just like the iphone, trying to trivialize the faults of the blackberry while going on and on about the iphone's faults is quite laughable. Every phone has it's pros and cons, I'm sure if I wanted I could list so many different cons about blackberries, go on thieir forums and read many users complaining about the devices like the iphone, they aren't perfect just like the iphone, it's up to the user to weigh the pros and cons of each device and go with the ones that fits them best.

That's it quite laughable, Apple didn't mention that they were coming to include the features they wanted in their OS updates, they just assumed that it would be included and since it's not included now they complain, you might not find some of these features being added useful but somebody is. If the iphone was such a useless device like y'all make it seem it wouldn't be selling. I doubt all these complaints found on these forums event amount to 1 % of iphone users, the majority of users are perfectly happy with these phones, which is why Apple keeps on selling more, and Apple and iphone constantly have the highest satisfaction ratings.

You really didn't read my response closely, did you? If you had, you would have seen this part:

I do acknowledge that RIM makes mistakes. I also acknowledge that while WiFi on the Storm isn't my cup of tea because I don't want a Storm, I didn't say I don't want WiFi. I also acknowledge that there are people that will want WiFi. I didn't trivialize anything. I acknowledged the faults of the Storm. I'm sorry you want to ignore that.

You are correct. Each phone has its strengths and weaknesses. But for someone that wants to incorrectly blast me for trivializing the BlackBerry faults, you seem to still gloss over the long list of missing features in the iPhone (in its current state). <-- That means that I can acknowledge that the iPhone will improve with time.

I have never bothered to ask this the whole time I've seen people ask for this because I have never found my self needing it so far. But could you give me an example of a need for this. And I don't mean "oh, my friend txt me to google ______ and I don't wanna have to type it." Give me something other than that if you could. Thanks.

*this is a friendly request btw, I'm not being a smart@ss.

Hi, here are some situations in which copy & paste would come in handy for me: I use Evernote extensively for collecting interesting cites from websites and documents I find on the internet. I would LOVE to be allowed to copy cites from documents and paste them into Evernote. I would also love to be allowed to send contacts from my address book by mail and not only using short messages. And as long as I cannot do that, I would at least love to be allowed to copy phone numbers from my address book and paste them into an e-mail instead of memorizing and retyping them. I often look up addresses on the internet while on the go. Many sites offer links to google maps or other mapping services, but others don't. Then again i find myself memorizing the address or scribbling it down on a piece of paper and retyping it in google maps, while c&p would do the job in no time.

Ungh... I was going to respond to this, but I'm tired. How about this... you enjoy your iPhone, and I'll enjoy my BlackBerry.

I can't comprehend why anyone would look at the iPhone as just being another phone now that it's been 15 months. Although the 3G is here, it's just a redesigned case with 3G and GPS, nothing more.

The AppStore is wonderful, if you like fumbling through millions of useless apps that echo the usefulness of widgets and dashboard.

The iPhone is just another phone like all the others, take it or leave it. For me, my @$$ hurting from still sitting on the fence, I am going to be eyeballing this HTC Touch HD that is supposed to be out by the end of October for Sprint. Couple that with a $99 everything and that fast as hell EVDO/3.5G network and I may have to get off of the fence.

Not a big fan of Windows Mobile, but HTC has been putting out some really interesting stuff lately.

For me the iPhone multitouch capacitance screen is so far ahead of these other "touch" phones that it fills in the gap of missing features the iPhone may have for the time being. Once those missing things like copy/paste are filled then it will be untouchable until other manufactures decide to improve their touch screens. Touch screens 10-15 years ago were cool and maybe some what of a gimmick, but now they are the norm and are getting outdated, multitouch, with gestures is the future of touch screens.

Agreed. The number one thing keeping the iPhone ahead of the curve is the software. Windows Mobile will always be a buggy POS in my opinion, hands down the worst product to come out of Redmond.

I do hope that Windows Mobile 7 is better, but I doubt it will touch the iPhone's mobile OSX even as buggy as it may be.

I agree with Dizzy13 about the touch screens as well. I haven't used TouchFLO yet but rumor on the street is every CDMA version of an HTC device gets a boost in processor and performance. Hopefully they do learn that the screen is a big part of the UI.

With all these new minor changes being made(especially the stupid Safari bar redesign), It's really starting to bother me why Apple is being so damn stubborn with rolling out some of the features that nearly everyone has been complaining about.. It's been over a year since the original iPhone was introduced!

- Copy/Paste
- Native MMS
- Video recording
- A2DP Bluetooth
- Notes/ToDo synch
- Voice notes
- Official AT&T-approved tethering app

As I said before, like many others: copy paste, copy paste, copy paste, copy paste, copy paste, copy paste, copy paste, copy paste, copy paste, copy paste, copy paste, copy paste, copy paste, copy paste, copy paste... Please.

Haha exactly . . Even so, for now just being able to turn the keyboard auto correct feature off is a definite boon. At least there are some more great advancements coming our way.

how about redo of the keyboard. coming from windows mobiles devices, this iphone keypad sucks balls. please make the buttons bigger!

I agree, but AT&T approved? Nahh, AT&T is greedy enough. They should get nothing from tethering. We pay a phone bill, that's enough. Internet use is included with our plans, how we choose to use it should be entirely up to us.

one thing i'd really like to see is the ability to change the volume control on the side of the phone to a next song/previous song button

Autocorrection off - YESSSSSS!

Everyone saying "don't make it switchable": SHUT THE F**K UP! You don't have to turn it off. Then the "experience" will stay the same for you. And yeah, if your tongue is English, shut up again! There are other languages on this earth than English, and the autocorrection is NOT working for them.

My tongue is a large bundle of skeletal muscles on the floor of my mouth that manipulates food for chewing and swallowing

It seems that Apple is taking further care in hiding new iPhone features in their beta releases. The most recent firmware beta seeded to developers listed "compatibility testing" in its release notes as the only change.

We've since heard of a couple of new features buried within the iPhone 2.2 beta. Apple has apparently made underlying changes to the iPhone's frameworks that are not yet exposed to the end user. These findings include:

- Support for Japanese emoji icons (screenshot) -- a popular feature for Japanese phones. The lack of emoji support has been blamed as part of the reason for slow iPhone adoption in Japan.
- Support for Google Street View for the Google Maps application. Street View allows users to view panoramic street view photographs in select cities within the Google Maps application. The feature was recently demoed on Google's Android phone.

Finally, Apple has also addressed one common request within the iPhone's Keyboard settings, allowing users to disable the iPhone's auto-correction.

Apple has not yet announced when the iPhone 2.2 firmware will be available.

The AutoCorrection OFF toggle-switch is TRUE, but others is FALSE.
How do I know? There's a post at iPhoneYap.com that discusses all new 2.2 features + screenshots.

I didn't think the japanese were waiting for extra smileys, I thought they were all already using devices that had more uses.

True, many Japanese phones have more functions than the iPhone, but they aren't nearly as cool - which is why the iPhone is a head turner and those other phones aren't. ;)

That said, I know several people who didn't buy iPhones solely due to the lack of emoji, including two hardcore Apple guys. So it's nice to see Apple taking carr of this.
