What a news!

What a news!

I was expecting really useful features, as notes and to-do list synced with Mail!

How long should I wait?

I have never bothered to ask this the whole time I've seen people ask for this because I have never found my self needing it so far. But could you give me an example of a need for this. And I don't mean "oh, my friend txt me to google ______ and I don't wanna have to type it." Give me something other than that if you could. Thanks.

*this is a friendly request btw, I'm not being a smart@ss.

Hi,

Not an iPhone user, but an iPod Touch user.

I found it would have been helpful when I looked up an address and wanted to see it in maps or put it in notes. I'm not talking about simple number addresses, but foreign language name addresses that are not easy to remember.

Having said that, I certainly don't have a pissy pants fit because it lacks this feature. It's only an iPod after all.

There are keyboards where you don't want auto-correct like typing in urls, and there are keyboards where you do want auto-correct like emails and notes.

Apple has different keyboards for URLs, email addresses, numbers-only and text. Auto-correction does not work on the URL keyboard or the email address keyboard. Check Safari and Mail. It won't correct you.

As long as iPhone developers are smart enough to use the correct keyboard for their application, you won't have problems with auto-correction where it should not be.

can you search in the calendar yet?

Not yet - but you will:

anyone have info on whether or not Name Display will be supported with the new firmware? (Name Display allows for both Name and # to be displayed on incoming calls without having to be in the address book)

I noticed a little while back that google has walking and public transportation directions on maps now. I think this would be just as useful if not more than incorporating street view. These walking / public trans directions could be very useful for places like NYC.

I was really hoping to see this in 2.1, but here's to hoping in 2.2!

Nice to see Apple well on the way to providing more updates to this amazing phone.

On the other hand, it's sad to see so many people still whining; waaaaah no MMS (MMS is not coming, it's old tech -fagetabout it). Waaaaah no copy/paste (it won't get here any quicker for your whining) Waaaah, no video - so what, it's not a great camera anyway - really just good for snapshots. Waaaaah!

Really, it gets old.

What about all the amazing functionality? I really feel sorry for the people that focus on the things they perceive that are missing - they totally lose the joy of appreciating the wonderful gadget they have.

Nice work Apple - keep the updates coming. Thank you.

MMS isn't old tech and as far as im aware over here in the UK its very much in use by people every day. Technically SMS is by far the older tech but its still implemented on the iPhone. If Nokia or Sony Ericsson released an expensive phone without MMS there would be outrage but as its an iPhone its suddenly not needed...

I want...

-vCards or at least an easy way to send contacts to someone
-Nike+
-some way to stop safari crashing so often

That's all (for now).

Personally I'm glad to see the back of MMS - good riddance.

I dont see what the big deal is about copy and paste. I have maybe once or twice in a year of owning the iPhone wanted to use such a function. I think this idea of NO COPY/PASTE????!! has just been hyped up. Now things like MMS, Video Recorder, Push Notification...thats real functionality

well for one thing, copy and paste would come in handy (as you can't forward a text message) in forwarding the contents of a text message to someone, Copy and paste would come in handy if you wanted to send someone contact details in an SMS or email (from your phone) Copy and Paste only is useful because it covers some of the phones shortcomings, if the phone didn't lack these rudimentary capabilities, cut and paste would be less of an issue.

yeah........u know today my cousin asked me to forward a contact to his cell....and i told i cant :(

Yeah, you have to hold this amazing piece of equipment and then read it out to him, and expect him to have to enter it. It's ridiculous.

Agreed, MMS is useful to have, especially when someone sends you an MMS message! I can see no reason for not including it. After all, if you don't want to use it, you can ignore it.

When I used to type with only one finger, the auto-correction feature was the most annoying thing in the world! But now that I type with two thumbs, I think the auto-correction feature is Brilliant!

:)

I take advantage of auto-correct too often for me to turn it off, but I wish there were times when I could change some of the dictionary words.

Like with "lol". Every time I type "lol" in it comes out as LOL. It might just be me but in the middle of a sentence a large LOL sticks out. "lol really?" comes out to "LOL really?" in the same vein as "LOL OMG KTHXBYE". I've always hit the "x" and typed it out in lowercase, but the iPhone never remembers.

Maybe it's just me...

dude! you're right on. that pisses me off too. LOL makes it look way hypercrazylame..ish.

Aargh! You're right. I forgot how those worked. However, the criticism is still valid. There are places like notes and text messaging and even typing emails where you may want to turn the prediction on and off with one quick toggle. The General Settings switch should just be for setting the default. There should still be a toggle on many of the keyboards.

kml support?

anyone heard if they finally fixed kml support for google maps on iPhone?

Thank god for the auto-correction feature! I made a fool out of myself on several occasions. Three times, I've written and sent emails with "Sincerely, Sex," when my name is "Dex." Just yesterday, I sent this text to my wife.."I'll be home in 20 mins. I'm stopping by my mom's to lick something up." Gross huh? What I meant what, "...to pick something up."

Seems to have learnt 'xxx' for me.
Indeed. In my experience, the majority of folks that complain about auto-correct have never tried to actually use it in the way intended, and have never followed the directions so clearly laid out on the Apple web site. They just started off mashing keys from the first day and are pissed that the iPhone never figured out what the heck they are doing.

I find most people never even try to teach it by hitting the little "x" for example, and that it never occurs to them that by not training it in the first place, they are carving some of their stupidest (and most hated by themselves ironically), mistakes, in stone.

"xxx" is the perfect example in that if you trained it just once or twice to do it right (in the beginning), it would never be a problem thereafter. But no, that would be too sensible I guess.

I don't understand why anyone would want to turn it off. I have very slender fingers and am very agile and nimble with them, but I find it almost impossible to hit the right keys. Auto-correct works very very well for me (I spent an hour or two training it on the first day), and I can type almost as fast as a regular keyboard. Without auto-correct, my speed would be abysmal with all the poking around and backspacing for corrections. There is simply no way that anyone can type as fast with it off as with it on, period.

Why are people so incredibly stupid that they don't follow directions and blame Apple for their own failure? Why do people actually want to type slower?

If Apple puts in the option to turn it off, I hope they label it "old codger mode" or "Homer Simpson mode." :)

This phrase alone made me buy the iPhone.

Really? I highly doubt that. Care to explain more, and maybe even care to explain why a carrying option (and there are plenty of carrying options other than an actual plastic holster for the BlackBerry) is most important over basic phone features? Odd...

I carried my iPhone in a holster. I carry my BlackBerry in a holster. I like them. Not everyone does, so there are leather cases, pouches, etc. for both phones. That being said, and what you are obviously missing, is that the BlackBerry knows when it is in a holster (or leather case, pouch, etc.) and performs functions based on that condition. Same with being out of a holster (or leather case, pouch, etc.). The iPhone can't. If you haven't used this feature, then you wouldn't understand how nice it is.
