Very nice update

1st off...this update is very solid. Unfortunately...I'm not a very happy camper. Why you ask? Well...here's my story:

I'm a big fan of the iPhone's location/GPS services. I think it is the coolest thing that you can send your location to family/friends. There are many apps available in the app store (many for free) that do this. One of the major drawbacks has been accuracy (especially when indoors). A relatively new (paid) application (Guide.me) allows you to adjust your location by moving the position pin on a map (for better accuracy) before you email it. This is significantly better than all the similar apps available, however, it does not allow you to zoom in on the map or provide satellite views, which would make pinpointing your position much easier. I pointed out this flaw when I reviewed the app (after paying $4.99 on November 20, 2008, about 12:30am).

Later on in the day (about 10:30am) I checked appshopper.com and was annoyed to find the app had been reduced to $1.99. DAMN!!! Oh well, if they implement the zooming and satellite views at least I'll be able to get the update for free and the price I paid won't be so bad. WRONG!!!!!

Fast forward to about 11:30pm and what do I find. APPLE HAS INCLUDED THIS FUNCTIONALITY IN 2.2. FU@k  Oh well, I'm probably not as mad as the developers of Guide.me.

Before this update I had about 500MB free on my 16GB iPhone, just updated, now I have 1.5GB free
I can't see straight away what might be missing, it all seems to be there, but something must have gone, right?
Unless Apple included a free GB in the update :D

Anyone else had this?

I saw all this around 5 or 6 am... And then this thread got to interesting for me to leave :D

I am going to test them now around Vienna. Need to take my dog to the vet now anyways

i'm also located in vienna...do we get public transporation infos round here? can't really test it until the evening...stuck at home, working :(

btw: 2.2 seems to work like a charm for now!

Support of Public Transport via Google Maps works fine here in Vienna. Finds even small bus routes (156B in the screenshot; U=Metro; Ankunft=arrival).

When you update an app in iPhone there is no temporary icon any more - the original placed one will show up a progress bar.

Transit is totally useless here in London. Tried a route from current location (Shoreditch/City) to Luton Airport and it's trying to take me on a 2 1/2 hour round-trip via Bishops Stortford!

FYI, the journey should be about 45 mins, via St Pancras station. And yes, I did click 'train'.

Can someone please post a direct link to the update file on Apples Server (the update for the Ipod touch).
I can not update my touch otherwise because I'm here at work with internet but without my touch and at home I have my touch but no iternet.

I searched Google and Apple.com without success.

I don't know how big Safaris cache may be or how big deleted mails can be, but perhaps the update emptied both apps cache and freed some space. Most people don't know that you have to empty the deleted mails on their ipOd, just like on a mac.

thanks a lot for the info! that's grrrreat!!!

^ you need internet for all those. and if you use it in real life, you would probably have no wifi signal.

Um, actually as a student, everywhere I go provides me with Wifi. My school, my home, my library. That's all the places I need to go to these days anyway (Uni took my life away). If we don't have Wifi, why did Apple give us Safari, Mail, Weather, and Stocks?

Yeah, and how can people have such fast internet? I'm in Canada (which sucks in every technological way, even RIM :D), and apparently I got High Speed 'Extreme' for the first month since signing up with Shaw and it's slow as heck. It took me 30 min to download the update. At least Shaw saved me money for making me NOT wanting to get Extreme.

Apple doesn't just charge you for updates because it wants to, it also is REQUIRED to by law. Also, you shouldn't expect to keep getting these updates for free. It takes time and money to develop these features, and they are something that Apple has the right to put out on the market and charge for. Some people will not want or need them. Others will be willing to pay $10. If you're that pissed off about it, then sell your Touch to someone on craigslist and invest in a frickin iPhone. I have one and it's great! Infact, it's AMAZING! I will never go back to anything else, as anything else is inferior.

im sorry but thats bs. please explain why the iphone can get free updates vs the ipod touch...

apple no longer gets money from at&t for each iphone which means apple is creating software updates for free. so the touch should be exactly the same. now once you buy the hardware that is the only money apple gets. so please tell me what i am missing because to me it looks like the ipod touch is getting shafted for no reason.

There is no law that says a company MUST charge for stuff. When Apple was being investigated for their stock options or whatever, and they released a paid update to unlock the 802.11n in the intel laptops. I read somewhere an interview with a financial expert about what was happening with Apple, and they explained Apple had no obligation to charge for that update, as a company is perfectly entitled to give out free updates, if they want. Same with the iPhone/iTouch updates.

Who cares how amazing your iPhone is? Mine is better. Some people apparently prefer to use iTouches, why shouldn't they?

Please don't act like you know/comprehend Apple's accounting practices.

Going into Contacts, Photo Album is so much faster now, it used to hang on contacts often for a few seconds before i could scroll around. This is a great improvement.

There is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarbanes-Oxley_Act

And unfortunately what you read about the 802.11n patch was wrong. This was a feature released later, and not a software update or patch.

Agree with this - just tried southend to Farringdon in London - 2 choices of train lines direct to london and it routed me via Stansted Airport!!! 90 mins out of the way!

Planes trains and automobiles

Is it possible to specify buses and / or trains in maps???? - Here in the UK am only seeing buses

Not being a smartass or anything, but how are walking directions any different than driving directions? Does it give your short cuts like "walk into dead-end and hop fence on left. Ignore dog barking and just run!"?

Even after eight years in the States, it sometimes amazes me how the concept of walking as a means of transportation is so fundamentally lacking.

oh wow thanks for the explanation. since you are obviously well versed in SOX why dont you explain to me why apple is forced by it to charge for the ipod touch updates and not the iphone updates?

Not this again... Didn't you all discuss this enough when the first paid update to the iPod Touch came out?

This is great - I just hope that the transit information works in London but a few posts above suggest it is not  Google obviously doesn't like the UK much (I'm referring to the new Voice Search in Google Mobile App of course, which also attracted a lot of negative attention in the UK media this week) but now the papers are going to have another field day if it can't hook up to the UK train network... :(

Unfortunately, I am reading this from work so I won't get to update until later tonight. Oh well, it's going to be a slow day... :D

I suspect the Street View does not work on iPod touch because of the lack of anywhere internet.

Its not "totally useless" - its just that Google has deals in place with certain public transport companies and not all of them. They can't provide you data from certain train companies if they don't physically have the data.

Don't know if this has been spotted yet by anyone else, but if you go into the 'PODCASTS' section on the iTunes Store, the word 'Catagories' is at the top, instead of the correct spelling: 'Categories'.

How on earth did that get past?

I never claimed I was.

I assume then you know that Apple still must recognize revenue on the iPhone in accordance with subscription accounting treatment of GAAP.

The Touch does not fall under any such requirement.
