And unfortunately what you read about the 802.11n patch was wrong. This was a feature released later, and not a software update or patch.

I can't see anything in that that says companies can't give stuff away for free.
As people have pointed out, Apple don't get any more money for the iPhone, yet iPhone updates are free?
I downloaded CrossOver for free (NOT pirated), given freely by the company.

Whether the 802.11n was a 'new feature' or an 'update' to improve from g to n is arguable and a matter of opinion, the point is they charged for it but didn't have to if they didn't want to, same story with the iTouch updates.

Its not "totally useless" - its just that Google has deals in place with certain public transport companies and not all of them. They can't provide you data from certain train companies if they don't physically have the data.

Well - to be honest if it doesn't work (for whatever reason) it's not a lot of use... therefore "useless" - though I don't doubt when it does actually pick up a fundamental method of "transit" it will be quite stunning!!

Go that way, and come say hi to me. I work in Bishop's Stortford. :)

If you were right I would agree with you.

Bollocks - if this is true then it's still no excuse. Try nationalrail.co.uk, thetrainline.com, virgintrains.co.uk - all use a common network database and there's no reason on earth why Apple can't use the same. I think it's basically just broken.

I never claimed I was.

I assume then you know that Apple still must recognize revenue on the iPhone in accordance with subscription accounting treatment of GAAP.

The Touch does not fall under any such requirement.

i did a quick google search and came up with an engadget post that pretty much said the same thing about subscription revenue over time.

this is from at&t's presser about the iphone 3G:

The new agreement between Apple and AT&T eliminates the revenue-sharing model under which AT&T shared a portion of monthly service revenue with Apple. Under the revised agreement, which is consistent with traditional equipment manufacturer-carrier arrangements, there is no revenue sharing and both
iPhone 3G models will be offered at attractive prices to broaden the market potential and accelerate subscriber volumes.

so i guess what i am missing (like i said in my other post) is how is the iphone different from the ipod touch now? there is no more revenue from at&t's monthly service. wouldnt that mean that apple only gets money from the one time sale of the iphone 3G, making it the same as the ipod touch?

That should read "no reason on earth why Google can't use the same."

They are obviously still reporting the iPhone under a subscription model: http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2008/10/21results.html

Uesless indicates "no" use.

Which clearly this isn't (it picks up local bus services in SE London for instance where I live)

However, the chances of say, TFL giving Google all of their data is slim. So it could be a while before we see it become useful for more people.

I don't blame Apple for this I blame Google - I mean this stuff is hardly a guarded secret - it's public domain... the issue is whether or not Google can be bothered to implement something outside of the US first - take street view as an example - how many of us are seeing that in the UK??? What's happened here is that the bus network have obviously got an easier API for Google to plug into than network rail

Yes, because parsing live train data onto mapping/routing technology is an easy thing to do.

Useless for trains, then. If I can't rely upon it to pick the best route, then I can't rely upon it at all!

And the data from all those other websites is surely in the public domain now, as another user pointed out.

I'm not saying it's not easy, I'm just pointing out the handful of other free websites that currently do it very well. And wondering out loud why Google/Apple can't.

The Street View team in the UK had a court case to deal with before they could implement it. Basically it was over privacy provisions. The imagery for the main cities in the UK was done ages ago.

There really isn't a service that does what you are asking Maps.app to do. Live departure boards are just one part of the process and the easiest thing to hook up (see the numerous apps in the AppStore that already do this)

Apparently I can't go from Kirkcaldy to Edinburgh (Scotland, UK) via bus or train (whatever that icon) is, altho there are direct bus and train links from Kirkcaldy to Edinburgh!
I can drive with quite a direct route, but if I want to walk I have to take a route about 50 miles longer to cross a bridge with no footpath, instead of the bridge it tells me to drive across which does have a footpath

What does "Reset Location Warnings" mean ?

i see this:

During fiscal 2007, the Company began selling the iPhone and Apple TV. Because the Company may provide unspecified features and additional software products to iPhone and Apple TV customers in the future free of charge, in accordance with GAAP the Company recognizes revenue and cost of goods sold for these products on a straight-line basis over their economic lives, with any loss recognized at the time of sale.

which refers only to the original iphone which had a revenue sharing agreement with at&t. there is no corresponding passage like that relating to the iphone 3G though. so far i have seen nothing that says apple realizes revenue from the iphone 3G over the 2 years of the subscription.

also this does not explain how apple can add new functionality to podcasting yet updating the maps is somehow out of bounds? that doesnt pass the smell test.

Update took 30 secs to d/l :D

Lets see how it fares on the iPod touch... 'Improvements' seem more exciting for iPhone users, but to be expected.

This came as a suprise. Strange time to release an iPhone update. I am now at work and I just found out. Can hardly wait to get home.
I noticed my iPhone sometimes locks out the simcard by itselfs. So sometimes I get the message SIM LOCKED. Same hapens when I pass the border, then it doesn't register with the roaming network. I hope this problems are resolved today.
Has anybody the same experience???

What's the point

Come on Apple get real here.

What's the point of having a machine they keep saying is a business tool and added things like Exchange compatibility etc, when we can't even get a simple cut and paste function

As a business user being able to cut and paste from one email I received to one I am sending is almost basic in its requirement.

Who cares about looking at a picture of 5th Avenue, what do you do with the picture now you have it? Orgasmic, an out of focus picture of 5th Avenue! Completely baffled to the point of this!

As an aside, can't do Buckingham Palace, Google does not have the pic.

I want Cut and Paste
I want to be able to listen to my music via bluetooth
I want to view Flash in my browser

But this update gives me a new real wow item for my 246Mb download... click the home button to get to my front screen WOW! common really!

Safari fixes ARE most welcome and totally needed. I was ready to chuck my itouch after the last crash. This update better be the one!!!!!

Yes...

Improved stability in Safari, eh?

You've said that before Apple...

We have heard that before. I hope it is true. I will give it a test by posting a response here on this forum. If it doesn't lag and it doesn't crash... well.... then Apple was honest. If it lags and crashes. Then don't put in the update info that you fixed it! lol I will put another reply on the forum with my phone if it works right.
