dunno if this is new or not, but in the thousands of texts I've sent it hasn't happened before...

if you press the space bar and a vowel in quick succession, you'll get a little popup of different accents for that letter.

You can just hold down the letter for about a second or so. No need to hit the space bar and rush to the letter :p

New fix

I'm not going to read through 11 pages of posts to see if anyone else posted this yet (sorry), but I have noticed since the upgrade to 2.2 that my Gmail fetching actually works now. I sent myself test messages while I was on 2.1 and I would sometimes get them 6 hours later on my phone (or whenever I was actively using it). With 2.2, my fetch every 30 minutes is actually working pretty consistently, and messages are coming in more frequently than every 30 minutes. This is a very nice fix for me.

That's been there since software v1, Steve even demoed it when he introduced the iPhone.

Anybody know if the 2.2 update fixes the issue with long backup times? And when I mean long, I mean 30-minute to 2-hour backup times.

Pretty sure after a quick scan this hasn't been mentioned and I know it wasn't in 2.1 or prior

Video's in the ipod section now say how much time is left in the movie if only partially watched

Yeah, that is cool, but I don't know if that was already a feature of 2.1.

Another thing that may be new has to do with the system volume. In 2.1, changing the volume when I had the earphones plugged in would be independent of the volume when earphones were not in. That is, when using 2.1, I could turn the volume up all the way (with earphones out), then plug earphones in, then turn volume all the way down. And when I would take the earphones back out, the volume would be all the way up again. Now in 2.2, the volume is the same regardless if the earphones are in or out. I found this out by sleeping in one morning when I thought the volume would still be up all the way.

An alarm clock change (I think) is that you can hit snooze by either pressing the volume button up or down.

Yeah i just noticed this and I'm pretty sure it is new.

Yes, greatly. I have aroud 15 apps all from the app store. With 2.0 backups were around 30-45 minutes, now with 2.2, it's around 2 minutes at the most! And I have more apps now!

This was in 2.1 as well as 2.0. You can also cruise sites like deviantart.com hold your finger down on the image and save it to your photos

I haven't really looked through the whole thread, and I'm sure it's been mentioned, but I noticed yesterday that when the silent switch is engaged on the phone, the phone is silent not only for the ringer, but also for the applications; something that's never really been true before. I've actually wanted to see this for awhile, because when I have the phone silenced, I don't like having to turn the application volume down separately.

Nice find, but I remember this feature way back in version 1.1.3 (It could of been earlier, but that's when I realized it). It is something that few realize since normally people don't ever hold down the links.

iPhone Temporary Lockout after 6 failed attempts

I don't believe anyone has documented this on any of the forums yet and I also believe it is a new feature but correct me if I am wrong. The first time you enter the wrong PW 6 times the phone will lock for 1 minute, after that minute has passed and you enter the wrong PW once more the phone will increase the wait time to 5 minutes, the process will continue after that and the time will increase to 15 minutes. I did not try it after that but I am guessing it will only increase to 30, then 60 and so on.

^make sure you don't have "Erase all data" on while experimenting with the passcode lockout, or else you will encounter some problems. (10th failed attempt)

Again, I'm unsure about the newness of this feature: when you are surfing net with safari in bed (or any other reason you would be laying horizontally) you can have the phone flipped upside down (home button up) and this will lock the accelerometer/screen in portrait mode so you can actually read screen easily. Normally, if you are laying horizontally with home button downward, the screen will revert to portrait mode.

It has always been like this.

No it didn't.
