Sorry, did not mean to come off snobish. I think a lot of people would be pretty mad (including me!) if they didnt offer it for the 1st gen. I know of a lot of people (again, including me) that did not upgrade to the 2nd gen because they didnt change enough to warrant the purchase. Plus, the phone has been out for a couple years only, thats not long enough to discontinue support for the software. Here is to hoping they dont block the 1st gens!

I understand your frustration if they did something like this, but they are out there to make money, how would they make all the 1st gen iPhone buyers to upgrade their devices, and also dont forget that there are a lot of those devices which have been sold in grey markets and iphones now are now sold on such markets.

Personally i have 3 1st gen iphones and i replaced them all with 3G iphones. My biggest problem with the iphone is the battery.

My daughter and my wife love the simplicity of the device.

you know what I would love to see the addition of?

Iphone updates without the need to sync the phone to itunes / dock.
I want auto Updates.

Considering the frequency the updates come out, and the frequency most people sync with iTunes, it wouldn't be worth the complication.

Wow, some of you people are really narrow minded.

If *YOU* don't like a feature, then no one else wants/needs it? Come on, is that really how you think? Are you that selfish?

People who use MMS are probably the same jackasses who flag every e-mail message at work as high priority when it ends up being just a fwd...

First, I can tell you multiple times I've lost out due to not having MMS. Usually at the worst times, like a girl sends me a picture to entice me just a little. Great ... didn't get it. Didn't even know it was sent. I'm now the jackass who ignored her and made her self-conscious of her body. Rock on!

Second, I don't necessarily want to send an email. Not everyone is tech saavy, not everyone has email ready phones and setting up email on phones is beyond some people. Heck, some people lived through the life of the VCR and never figured out how to set the clock!

Third, it's quite obnoxious to tell people to text message me at my email address. I get a blank stare like I've lost my mind.

Just because *YOU* don't like it, doesn't mean there isn't a use for it. Like it impacts your life somehow. It's akin to complaining about a new superhighway development in Richmond, Virginia ... when you live in San Diego, California.

multi-core ARM

I don't think that the lack of a commercially available multi-core ARM processor is any indication that they are not working on one. With previous processor cores (ARM7 at least) you could license the core and tie it to your own peripherals, memory or other processors as your design required. I would think that they could take two ARM11 cores and tie them together to make a multi-core processor if they wanted to.

I totally agree.

Good point. Makes me wish I had a girlfriend. :(

All very good points. Something that I've noticed in my life: people, for the most part, are stupid, arrogant idiots. That includes myself, too, unfortunately.

All this reminds me of last year & how many problems there were. First off, everyone w/ a 1st gen iPhone wanted to upgrade to 2.0 of the firmware, congesting the servers. Plus, with all the new iPhones needing to be activated, that clogged the servers even more. Plus, you had to activate it in store, meaning longer lines and less iPhones sold in an hour. My boss had a 1st gen iPhone & tried to upgrade his software and it didn't finish correctly so his iPhone was bricked. Since he was an administrator (specifically the Director of Technology), he needed the iPhone just in case someone needed to contact him or vice versa. Hopefully, Apple will increase the server load so this kind of thing doesn't happen again (or at least not as badly). If it does, I expect to see Apple's stock tank. Anyone remember when it was over $200/share?

would be amazing if the updates were released today...
best st. pattys day for a long time...

update?

Does this mean that there will be a new version of the iPhone, or just the software? I have plans to buy an iPhone 3G this week and am wondering if I should wait. Will I be eligible for the new software when it comes out?

3.0

What's most surprising is the lack of any significant insight to 3.0 other than copy paste.

Apple has done very well this time in keeping features 3.0 holds out of the lime light. But where's all the speculation? Yes the forums are filled with the usual hopes for MMS, Tethering or push notification (previously promised by Apple) but is that it?

In other words aren't most (if not all) of those things just a laundry list of things that people have hoped for since 1.0 ? Where's the meat!

I think Apple will reveal things about 3.0 that no one saw coming... it is 3.0 after all.

If it's going to come pre loaded into the next generation iPhone it surely must have software features to compliment the new hardware.

Copy paste is great but only a side note of 3.0. what's most interesting about 3.0 already is "What's underneath the hood of 3.0 that Apple is NOT REVEALING TODAY".

Might not happen.

You knew the iphone didn't have MMS. If you NEED that feature, why did u buy it?

I never understood why people buy a product THEN EXPECT the company to update or upgrade it so it has the feature they want.

Have u ever buy ANY electronic good then expect the merchant or manufacture to UPGRADE/UPDATE it later for free??? Seriously.

It's a free country. As a consumer your $$ cast votes. Buy a product that serve your need.

tablet

1. iPhone 3.0 update
2. Mac OS 10.5.7 (maybe)
3. One more thing: "Tablet" announcement

I'm not buying it. I've heard Tablet rumors for nearly a decade and won't believe it until I actually see it released later on this year ;) .

I'm starting to believe the Tablet rumors are generated by Jim Cramer (mad money) to in his words "Milk" the stock.

To suggest MMS isn't needed because one could simply use email - is to suggest text messages aren't needed because one could simply use email.

I seem to remember people crowing about how the iPhone will end the need to continually buy new hardware. All the missing features were going to be software upgrades that were supposed to come out in a few months (from the original launch). Almost 2 years later, and the long list of things wanted seems to be growing.

What makes the whole thing amusing is how people pointed to how Windows Mobile needed all these 3rd party applications to fix some of the oversights, yet that seems to be the response a lot of people are happy to give for the iPhone here.

I'm afraid you're barking up the wrong product tree.

In this case, many phones were sold on the very premise that updates are easy and common. Missing VPN? Missing Exchange? Missing native apps? No problem, an upgrade will take care of it.

Have u ever buy ANY electronic good then expect the merchant or manufacture to UPGRADE/UPDATE it later for free??? Seriously.

Yep again, since Apple has said that the monthly royalties from the first iPhone, and the profits from the other models, are partially earmarked as charges for free software updates.

3.0 update today? The preview wouldn't be all that advanced then would it... No chance for developers to use it before it's out? That's not going to happen. I can't see any hardware announcements taking place either, but would be happy to be proved wrong.

Why are people getting excited about the possibiliy of new hardware today? there will be none of it! its the os of the iphone, they won't give the game away on any new hardware today!
