If I do need them to check out a photo, I call/text them and ask them to check their email ASAP. Simple.

My god. Simple? This is easier than just being able to send a picture to anyone with a mobile phone?

Regardless of what many on this forum claim, MMS is a widely-used, mainstream technology for sending quick pictures to your friends and family. Everyone I know uses it (except those with iPhones), including teenagers, young adults and older adults alike. No, not everyone has email on their phones. Not even close.

Ok i am in Greece @ the office waiting for the big moment.....i am always optimistic about things so here are my thoughts:

Today they will release 2.3 which is going to have background notifications. So they will give us something they promised 6 months ago....

As for v3 it will be something completely new, new user interface, new apps and i think that v1 of the iPhone will not be supported.

As for MMS i believe we will not be getting any MMS, we have email why use MMS?

I'm with you partially: I kinda expect to to have a 2.3 firmware this week or next at the latest. After announcing improvements that will be coming in a few months, I think there is enough expectation that Apple will have to give us “something” to change the game a little bit right now—kind of a teaser if you will.

The problem is that the big features will likely require an overhaul of many current applications and the OS, so this “something” will need to be a feature that can be implemented without much delay or planning by developers. Possibly something that is at the OS level that already has hooks in place for well-written apps and “just works” after the firmware update. I have no idea what that could be, but I do expect we will not have to wait months for everything shown today.

Even though I have work at 8.30AM I'm really tempted to stay up until 2/3AM just to see what's happening with it...curse living on the other side of the world...

We hear ya Ivan....we're all up very late here too to get some :apple: love!

I'm looking for MMS, the ability to forward SMS and MMS messages, the ability to record and save videos, copy and paste and the ability to tether the iPhone. All of the above can be done via a software update since all but copy and paste can be added in if you jailbreak (and in the case of MMS, are willing to constantly go back and forth with AT&T to get them to update your account settings to enable MMS) so come on Apple get with the program.

It's laughable that two years after the iPhone's release you still can't do these very, very basic things. I'm going to be looking at v3.0 and the next rev of the iPhone very carefully. If they don't include the above features plus at least a 3.0 megapixel camera then I'm going to take a serious look at alternative phones when my contract expires in a couple of months.

Ya, because the first gen iPhone and the second gen iPhone are running completely different hardware specs ;) Other than GPS and the 3G chip, they are identical. Neither of those two have anything to do with the actual performance of the phone. If the first gen isn't supported, then you can't support the second gen.

well, ATT has been beta testing live video messaging for a while now...
I wouldn't be surprised if this doesn't surface soon.

**hint**

haha

what a great idea! honestly. i'd be lying if i was excited for any of this to happen. i'm sure it will all be greater than we expect - but i am not in the market for a net book OR tablet (unless it's as revolutionary as the iPhone) and i'm jailbroken.

buuut i'm sure apple can make their iPhone work better than hackers can so at least i have something to be excited for!

So much hate in this forum. A lot of people don't want to MMS to happen. Apparently, you don't need it but to some, it is useful for them. You are not affected if it does happen, you always have the option not to use it and stick to your e-mail for sending photos because they are "better". Don't bring other people down with your crab mentality. I myself would never use a phone camera except probably during emergencies but I do hope other people would get their flash, better lens, increased megapixel because its important to them. Stop being selfish and think about others for once.

Nicely said. A good breadth of features designed to suit different users, at different points in life, is what makes a wonderful phone even more ubiquitous, which benefits us all.

My mistake

What i meant and excuse me for this is that i am guessing that it will be a locked upgrade, meaning that orig iphone's will not be able to get upgraded.

You know what I really want to see? Better iPod software on the phone, something that would bring it up to par with what's on the current gen Nanos, which are a joy to use. I don't want to have to scroll through a list of every song on my iPhone when I want to add to an on-the-go playlist - I should be able to do this from wherever a song or group of songs is described. Keyword search would be useful too - you can do this on the current Nano firmware and that doesn't even have a keyboard...

I'm sure when the iPhone was first introduced, Steve called it the 'best iPod ever'. Yeah, well, whatever...

jx

if at all possible...any new model iphone will be released by Steve when he feels/looks better. iPhone is his baby..and he wouldnt let anyone else release it to the world if he couldnt physically do it.

Sorry, did not mean to come off snobish. I think a lot of people would be pretty mad (including me!) if they didnt offer it for the 1st gen. I know of a lot of people (again, including me) that did not upgrade to the 2nd gen because they didnt change enough to warrant the purchase. Plus, the phone has been out for a couple years only, thats not long enough to discontinue support for the software. Here is to hoping they dont block the 1st gens!

This will happen with technology.

I would expect the 3rd Gen iPhone to be different than the current model. By different, I don't mean tweaks, but significant changes.

I agree, I think the 3rd gen will be a lot different. I think however, to let the update work for 2nd gen phone and not 1st gen, would be a smack in the face. I think in this situation, you either have to support the first two, or none. At least, from a hardware and ethics standpoint.

Anyone hoping it would catch up to the Pre will be disappointed. It'll be surprising if Apple was able to catch up within the last few months to the Palm Pre level.

It's a more versatile solution, allowing better quality pictures and access from multiple devices.... it is rare that people need to share photos instantly when neither are at an email-capable device. If neither are at such a device, the photo could often, in all reality, wait a few hours.
Exactly. Why waste time on a botched "standard" when e-mail works better, is being supported on more devices, is somewhat more secure, has more room to grow on mobile device, etc. The last thing I want to see is someone's new cat seconds after they got one—that crap can wait. Or better yet, send me a message saying "new pics are up in my gallery on my flickr/website/facebook/myspace" or whatever. People who use MMS are probably the same jackasses who flag every e-mail message at work as high priority when it ends up being just a fwd...

I agree to an extent, but AFAIK (and I could be wrong) the only real changes were 3G and GPS. I don't think they upped the processor or anything, so there's no reason to believe that v1 would be unable to function with the update.

How about the ability to attach multiple pictures per mail we send?
And not having to go through "photos" in order to do it, a small fix, but we need it...

I'm annoyed by the way that apple limits the iphone for the sake of it looking slick, what if I want the speed to be dazzling, the data rates humongous and the battery short lived?

But I, just as everyone else, wants the important stuff like multitasks, push-not's, but I'd also like to see something really new, and really big, last year we got the appstore and stuff, I hope they wont have a presentation just to tell us that they're adding stuff we were supposed to get 6 months ago.

BTW, which version of the iphone software were they at when they presented 2.0?
