My original iPhone "leaked" light, and my 3G does too.

Doesnt really bother me that much I dont guess...

I assume that MANY MANY people have this issue and don't even realize it.

Then it's NOT AN ISSUE! If the vast majority haven't noticed it, or don't care, then it's not a problem. I know how frustrating it can be when you splash out money on something and it's actually FAULTY, but this is nuts. How is it, in any way, affecting your productivity with the device?

As another poster said, it's not meant to be a waterproof unit. And if you're purely worrying about it from a cosmetic viewpoint, then I'd say, get some priorities. If having a bit of light coming out of the join of your mobile phone is a concern... Well, you need help :)

I'd be more worried about dust getting under the glass than anything.

Care to explain why it is only leaking on the left side then? When i look at 9 out of 10 phones and they are all leaking light on the same side I would call that a manufacturing defect. Not only is it distracting but it allows dirt and grime to get under the screen. I guess if you don't mind dirt and grime under your screen due to a shoddy seal then its "not a big deal" and we are all "nuts." :D

Who cares if it goes under the LCD? The only time you'd actually see the lint/dust that creeps in the left side near the bezel is if it somehow got between one of the three layers of the screen above the LCD (the protective shield, capacative touch panel, and LCD)...but you aren't explaining how it would do that (the three panels are pressed tightly against each other).

Sounds like your disdain for the 'defect' is based purely on aesthetics so you are trying to come up with reasons (which are, to this point, unfounded) why a rational person might agree with your point of view and consider it an actual defect.

My phone (16gb white) is about 2 weeks old and I have moderate light leak on the left side. It didn't bother me all that much until today when I noticed around 5 visible dust particles under my screen. While they are hard too see when the phone is on, they are visible on a dark background. I will be taking it to an Apple store and try to get a replacement.

Are you sure they weren't there before?

I've had my 16GB black since the day after launch day. Just checked. No light leak at all. Not all phones have them.

Even if it did have light leak, I wouldn't return it. Everything else works perfect. Not worth paying Russian Roulette.

Couldn't agree more.

I know what you mean. I thought the same thing myself. But I changed my mind and exchanged my iPhone with a bad light leak (see my previous post in this thread). Guess what? The new phone has no light leak, nor any other problem.

It is certainly possible to get dust in between the layers. Here are a few pictures showing the dust under the glass, above the LCD screen. I'm not sure if it has anything to do with the light leak gap on the left side, but it's a decent hypothesis.

Positive. I made sure there were no dead pixels or dust when got it.

Wow that's scary. The vast majority of iPhone 3g's have the light leak problem and this pretty much confirms that dust CAN work it's way between the layers of the screen after production from things luke pocket lint etc...

Yeah, this was why I originally returned my iphone. Now I have a bunch of Apple Steve Jobs cool aid drinking zealots breathing down my neck about how "anal" I am.

To those of you attacking my posts, by all means, keep your light leaking phones. But, don't get upset that I want one with a good seal.

You are confusing my request for proof of your theory with an attack. Anyone who doesn't immediately agree with you means they are attacking you? Who's drinking the kook-aid again?

its not on every phone..I just checked my phone in complete darkness (closet) 3 times trying to look for it..or imagine it...and i dont have the light leak..got my phone day after iDay..16gb black..hope you guys get it taken care of.

I've got a small area where there is minor light leak.. it's annoying now that i know it's there.

I'll probably see where this thread goes and in the next week or so call up apple and see if I can't get it replaced..

Or do I need to schedule an appointment first? Not sure how that works.

Yeah, its there on both my phone and my wife's. It doesn't bother me unless their is some possibility of dust getting under the glass but it seems like its pretty well sealed. I dont understand why this would be at higher risk? someone explain this to me?

Schedule an appointment. I had an appointment today for my phone that was leaking light and was able to exchange it. I took a picture of the light leakage in the dark and synced it to my iphone. When the genius asked me what was wrong I told him that there was light leaking from between the bezel and screen. I then showed him the pic on the phone and he immediately got me a new one which is not leaking any light.

I've checked about 5 iPhone 3Gs (One mine, One my Wife's, a three other friends; all different colors, all 16GB) no light leaks/Dust at all....

I've got two spots about this big..

___ to size. That long roughly in two spots, but i dont know if i'de be able to capture a picture of it.. and will they be able to see in the store?

I don't want to sound all anal saying minor light leak i need an exchange but I also dont want to worry about dust or anything getting in there and if I can exchange it, why not?

I think taking a picture of it in the dark and having those photos on your phone is a good idea. I will be using this technique today, thanks goes to the person who recommended it.

So I went into the Apple store today after making a reservation to swap out my phone. I showed the Genius both of my problems (and pictures), the light leak and the dust. He said that he didn't consider the light leak a critical problem, although the dust was. He brought out my replacement and as he was syncing it on his laptop I had a chance to look it over. Since it was extremely bright in the store I wasn't able to see if there was any light leak, however, I noticed at least 4 specks of dust under the glass. The genius recognized this as a problem and immediately got another phone. The next one was even worse, it had a strange dot under the glass that looked like dust but was reflective. On the third attempt we finally got a phone with no dust under the screen, it was also the last replacement phone they had in stock. I must say this is a little worrisome and I wonder how extensive the dust problem is. When I got home I checked the light leak, and although it is better than my first phone, it still has light leaking on the top left :(. So... I guess I will live with it now and see if Apple ever acknowledges the problem.

Im getting my white iphone replaced because of light leak. I went to the Apple store and I guess ill be getting a replacement tomorrow. I think I might get a new or refurbished one not sure, I dont care as long as its good.

I got my Black Iphone 3g 16gb on the July 12th. I have very little light leak on the left side where is volume control button is. :( Should I exhange it or leave it and don't bother?

Just got my replacement. Same issue as before - light leak down the entire left side. On my last phone, dust particles DID end up under my glass, and I'll be seeing if it happens again. If so, back to the Apple store.
