After reading this thread im a little concerned since i've been waiting a few weeks for my 16GB in black to come in at the AT&T store, which will finally be here on monday afternoon if i see dust or any light leaks in the store would i need to take it to an Apple store? or does AT&T stores do any exchanges?

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who posted pics.

I thought mine was leaking light when I was using it last night but it's very, very minor compared to the pics posted here. If it gets more noticeable I'll take it back when Apple can actually fix it, but for now I can live with it.

i've checked today in the store 3 iphone 3g white 86829...

all 3 have light leaks from the left side!!! one for 2 centimeters.. the other two nearly all the screen height!

all 3 phones (very similar serial, same batch) had also plastic problems : two of them had one bubble in the back white plastic and one had a hair (??!!) inside the plastic.. hope you can understand what i mean.. while plastic was preapring a hair went on..:apple:

Still holding out to see if they fix this issue. They all seem to still be plagued by it. Currently have a 3G with quite a bit of light leak.

Yea im not gonna bother brining it in (yet), if other things happen like you get scratches or something on the phone might as well bring it in then so you can get a whole new one! it only bothers me at night and i have a case that covers the sides so i'll wait a while.

They might not replace it if it's too screwed up! Take it in while it's still fresh!

Hey all. I just made somewhat of a breakthrough in the light leak.

My friend’s iPhone has always had a minor light leak, but yesterday he had it in his back pocket and sat down on the phone. When he took it out, we noticed that the light leak was now considerably bigger. It now went half way down the left hand side of the screen and had a couple more spots leaking on the lower half as well.

We tried pushing the screen over towards the left side and then there was light leaking on the other side of the screen! So, having decided that he would need to take it in for a replacement, I decided to try squeezing the plastic back inwards on both sides and it made a few weird popping type noises and wouldn't you know, the light leak completely disappeared! He has a white iPhone and there are still no visible cracks on his white back. It was as if the plastic back had simply been stretched too much and needed to be popped back into place.

So if you have a light leak on an otherwise perfect iPhone, try squeezing the plastic back inward at both sides. It could save you a lot of trouble!

u can try squeezing the chrome frame inward... This will help with the light leak a bit....

I will warn u though, it may "misalign" the chrome and the plastic back...

But that's the compromise...

Basically, I think this IS the build quality of the 3g...

Take a very very thin tool like the tippy top of a new exacto blade used for art projects gently take the tip and push the rubber gasket on the non-light leak side of the gasket.

This pushes the gasket slightly over to block it.

It's the gasket.

So I have this real thin and interspersed dots of light coming out from the left side b/w the glass and the bezel. But with this, I can also feel a very very minute misalignment problem when I run my finger over the chrome and plastic junction!
Beside this, I have a gorgeous 3G with no cracks (till now at least) and no scratches or dents (again, till now) and I love the spotless screen!

So should I take it in?

I'm pissed because i never had my brightness turned up on my phone and last night i turned it up. My girlfriend asked me whats wrong with the back of my phone and to my surprise the back of my phone was glowing. This light leak is terrible. I purchased my phone on july 27....thank god my girl noticed this problem last night. Now my question is if i make an apt at the mac store for tomorrow can i return my phone for a new one or would it be best just to go to the mac store today?? Does the black iphone have light leak just like the white iphone...and would i receive a new phone or a refurbished.

i've had that on 3 white 3Gs in a row. i've pretty much given up. i feel like all of the white iPhones have it and anyone that claims not to have it just hasn't turned their brightness up in the dark yet. i've had several different production weeks, so i don't think its just in a specific week. i might try trading it in again, but other than that light leak everything else is perfect on this phone (except for the software of course) and i don't want to risk other problems. it's just poor application of the dye or plastic i guess. i've heard of one black iPhone having it, but it seems to be mainly affecting the white ones.

and for what its worth, 2 of the geniuses i dealt with swapped it with no issue. one of them i had to fight with.

and, you will definitely get your replacement from one of the "plain white boxes" but from what i've heard they are usually new.

thanks i think i'm going to live with it..because my phone works fine and i dont want to risk getting a crappier phone.

Even I guess I'll wait untill September to hand it over! With all these posts coming in..... Its a waste to get it replaced it again and again and again and get your name up on the Apple Store Creep List!

My black 16G week 30 has light leak as well. I also just noticed my first couple pieces of dust under the glass too. I have an appointment on Saturday to have a genius look at it. I took three photos of my phone in the dark and synced them to the phone. That way I have pics to prove the light leak. Wish me luck!

I also have a very minute misalignment between the chrome and plastic junction. To be honest I think this is normal, but with all these problems I don't know what normal is any more.

I was having some problems with ATT so I recently went in and discussed the issue with an official in a nearby ATT Store! He asked me for the device so I gave it to him... he went inside somewhere! When he came back, my problem was solved but my iPhone's chrome logo was brutally scratched....

So I've decided that I'll be taking it in after all and get a replacement!

Me too man.

Ever since swapping my first phone (which had a titled screen and dusk (and probably a few other problems I didn't notice)) I've been noticing things left and right that don't seem "proper".

I don't know what to think anymore. Is this busted, or not?

And which week or what day did you replace the iPhone?

This is giving me the shooks! DO I REPLACE IT OR NOT? I have an appointment tomorrow!

Well ... I got my first phone the Saturday after launch in Canada. I swapped it for a "white box" phone about, maybe, 2 or so weeks after that. I've probably had the phone I have now for about as many weeks.

What's that trick to tell the build date from the serial number? I can give you that info if you want it.

Tell me about it. I had an appointment yesterday that I wasn't able to go to ... but I think I'm going to give everything a few more weeks to settle down. I just want to be sure I have a phone that falls "within spec" for everything. Right now, I can't really tell if things are working like they're supposed to (Camera, casing, radios, etc.)

The manufacturing week is the fourth and fifth digit in the serial number.

I couldnt make much sense of the first part! Saturday as in 12th July? So when did you get it replaced? 2 weeks later as on 26th?
