The record labels wont allow it unless Apple gives them a bigger cut. This has been reported on before.

Not everything on iTunes is owned by a record label. A good ammount is independent. Also, I don't see where there is a difference to downloading via wifi or via 3G as far as apple's rights to sell. It's like a record company saying "You can sell our albums at your right store register, but not the left".

Then again, I wouldn't put it past the RIAA do something like that.

If they were sold over 3G, then ATT would want a cut. Doesn't ATT have it's own music download service already?

You mentioned the ATT store had white ones and you can't tell us the amount due to disclosure issues. Can you tell us if its a good amount or very very limited? Thanks!!!!

so what are you saying?

Webapps, as in you go to a website and it runs some Web2.0 AJAX type stuff? I don't see how... In order to turn on and read the GPS data, something has to be written and running on the phone itself. In the case of the Maps application (or the address book linking to the maps app, etc.) the Maps app itself turns on the GPS and asks it for the location info and then uses that to determine what map data to ask Google Maps for. Typically with web apps, their code is restricted to only what limited Javascript can run within the browser, and most of the "heavy lifting" type processing is done on the server side.

In my app's case, I'm using the location information to help you determine the direction you're facing and create a compass heading from that. The rest of my app uses that compass heading to do things. No map involved...

GPS just sends time information from the sats. The GPS chip looks for those signals from multiple sats and uses triangulation to determine your Lat/Long/Alt. That's all it can do. Anything involving mapping or directions or anything like that is a product of software that is written to make use of the GPS lat/long/alt information...

so are you saying that if the correct advanced native app was written, say garmin partnered and made an extremely comprehensive app using detailed voice and turn by turn support, would the chip be sensetive enough to note 1 turn or a street, is it strong enough to compare to an actual garmin. because if so, then im sure garmin would make that app and we could all have great t-b-t and mount that glossy 3g in the car =)

well i know i would. ..get back to me on that .thanks

Can't answer this. If its a webapp then it wont cost as a text. I speculate that with the native AIM app they will be charged as text since that is how AT&T works it... however, again... I use the word speculate here.

its data because the SDK doesn't allow access to the SMS client

Boomshakalak!

Nice catch. :D Never know what kind of corprate crap AT&T may do though, but looks like it's in our favour now.

Names only.

I'm pretty sure that in the videos they showed keywords for people or something like that you could search besides names. It's odd they'd not include the email and stuff that's there as well.

Thanks for the early hands on and great info. I'm still just a bit on the fence at this point; at the end of the day it's "only" 200 bucks if I want to stay 8gb or an extra $100 for the 16mb upgrade to my current setup with the bonus of GPS if/when I need it and 3G if/when I need it. I've spent more on more frivolous toys so.... :D

I hope you realize how lucky you are, some people are camping for this piece of perfection. Good luck with it!!!

Hardley a piece of perfection but what do I know anyway. BTW are you friends with massingil and kotex?

X-

Phil: Does your buddy from ATT have any idea at all when they may actually offer the no-contract iPhone 3Gs? (for 599/699 as stated). If you could ask that would be great.

Bit of a dull question but i'm going to ask it anyway :D

Is making entries to the calendar any easier? ie. can you just press the time you want to make an appointment and it lets you rather than just manually entering it?

I guess all the main points have been brought up. I suppose what I really want to know is, is the upgrade worth it? I will be upgrading no matter what because of my predicament, however; its more of a curiosity aspect.

has the store gotten in 3g specific accessories?

Yes, one pouch... and it sucks

No he doesn't.

No, tap the plus sign.

So, we went to lunch a few miles away and took the phone with us.

I am sad to report the GPS (at least in Google Maps) is SLOW.

It studders as we drive down the road. We drive a little and then the dot moves. It's not real time.

I'm curious as to whether or not they've updated the calendar to allow you to do repeat events on multiple specific days of the week. Currently, you can only have it repeat everyday, every week, every month, or every year.

For example, if I had a cooking class every Tuesday/Thursday at 6pm, would it allow me to do that now?
