Somehow I think that sales will be disappointing, especially as the economy has taken a dive and increased energy, food, and mortgage costs are making a lot of people feel pretty poor.

I think you're right. Apple are desperately trying to get the prices of iPods down and the value for money up. Nobody really needs a £400 phone, it is a luxury item no matter how useful some of its functions. There will be no doubt a price drop before long.

I hope I can go in-store on the 16th and just pick 1 up.... I was told that apple stores wont be allowed to sell the PAYG version. oh well, we've got an apple store, cpw and an o2 store all in the same area so I'm going to have to hope o2 and cpw have some in stock...prob give 'em a call beforehand. :D:D:D

From the O2 PAYG page;

It will be available to buy from 16th September in O2 stores, The Carphone Warehouse and Apple stores.

So I'm under the impression people generally think its not really going to be sold-out by the time I need to buy one, in mid-Ocober. Is that so?
It'll probably be bought online anyway, you don't think that'll be a problem, do you?

If it does get low on stock, ie sold out. Just wait till the next patch comes in. Or better still, go get it early and that way you know you are gona get it before mid-oct.

Or go to an apple store, they have plenty of iphones in stock.

Although most PAYG mobiles cost a lot less they are generally pretty average phones. If I was going to buy an iPod touch for £220 I would seriosly consider an iPhone for £180 more. As it is I have one on contract but did buy 2 touches at launch for something like £250 each, for me £400 just doesn't sound expensive for what you get, I always thought an N95 or other top end mobile on PAYG was 3-400 anyway.

will any O2 sim work in a PAYG iPhone? can i buy an online 25, which is £20pm without a contract but with unlimited web bolt on? this works out cheaper than an 18 month monthly contract (£400+£20*18=£760 vs £159+35*18=£789)? seems a good deal with 600mins and 1000 txts pm.

Yes, that will work, but isn't it £25 per month rather than £20? If so, that would make it £850 versus £789.

Don't think you'll get visual voicemail or conference calling either for what it's worth.

£20 online until the end of the month. seems a good deal? (too good, am i missing something?)

Nope, total cost for my iphone is 3g is £288.

As follows, I am a business customer, so I pop into apple retail store. Purchase the iphone 3g on the £75 pound tariff. Phone is free, I then bring the iphone on to my business account. Additional user costs me £12 including tax. Thus over 24 months iphone costs me £288, I have done this for 3 of my family members already.

Can you give more details of the actual steps in achieving this, because I looked at the Business tariffs and they were more than the normal ones once you added VAT.

Guys, just for comparison (for those deciding between contract and PAYG):

Contract: 16GB £159.00, £30 Tariff (18 Months). TOTAL = £699.00

PAYG: 16GB £399.99, £10 Internet (6 Months, after the free 12), £10 Usage (18 months estimated minimum phone/texts). TOTAL = £639.99

That is assuming that you change your phone after 18 months, and don't use it for that much each month.

Also, with PAYG, you don't get Visual Voicemail or Call Merging... I'm glad that I gave in and decided not to wait for PAYG. These plans are worse than the leaked ones!

Your calculation is wrong I think as you do not have to top up by £10 a month but if you do that pays for your £10 per month internet charge after your free 12 months. So by my calc
PAYG: 16GB £399.99, £10 Internet (6 Months, after the free 12), TOTAL = £459.99

I realise you don't get any inclusive calls or texts (though this depends which plan your on) with this but then that's the point of PAYG.

At the moment I have my 2G phone on O2 PAYG and I top up by £10 per month. £7.50 goes towards unlimited internet and because I top up by £10 I get 500 free texts (of which I use about 50) which leaves £2.50 for calls which I hardly ever use.

I think this is a great deal but I'll definitely be upgrading to 3G PAYG as I also think that is a great deal and I'm a gadget freak!!!:)

Also forgot to add the price of the unit is kind of irrelevant as I would expect to get back nearly it's full value by selling it on. That's the real beauty of nearly all Apple gear, it keeps its value really well.

Although the 3G phone coming out on PAYG is probably bad news for the resale value of my 2G especially when they bring out the 3G unlock. Better get it on eBay quick!!!

I'm wondering what the international value of these iPhones will be on eBay. Maybe if I buy and sell and few then maybe I'll earn enough to buy one of my own.

That's what I did when the 2G first came out. Bought 5, unlocked them, sold them on for about £60 profit and then just kept the 6th one which is what I have now.

Just now it is much easier. Did you have any hassle or idiots trying to claim it didn't arrive or work, etc.?

It was a real pain in the arse tbh which is why I stopped when I finally got my 'free' iphone. Only had one real idiot but he put me off thinking about turning it into a nice sideline - he sent me about a dozen quite abusive emails before finally accepting it did work perfectly without any apology. There are some real muppets out there!

This was before ziphone and the pwnage tool so you could charge a premium for unlocking - probs not the case now.

I spoke to O2 employee yesterday (Sunday) and he said he hasn't heard anything official about the sale of the Pay & Go iPhone. He knows what it says on the O2 site but nothing has been confirmed with his store yet.

Not very reassuring.

Has anybody else heard anything better?

I spoke to both O2 and CPW last week and neither of them heard n e thing from their bosses regarding the PAYG iphones, they are really un-professional.

Don't forget, the 3G cannot currently be software unlocked! The phones are locked to O2 and require a network spoofing SIM adapter.

When I go to college, my class don't start till 10:50, getting my buss at 7 and lining up first :)

i hope i can get one tomorrow. i probably will now end up going at 8 because everyone seems to be going early, i dont want to get left.

I spoke to a sales guy in O2 in my local town (it's a tiny place) the day after the prices were announced and he already knew all about it. I'm surprised the sales people in bigger towns/cities aren't clued up by now!

the women in the o2 store said they're won't be THAT much hype about the pay and go phones, but they will still sell out

oh yes, did i mention this was a WOMEN... sooo she could be wrong.
