Ok so, I am due for an upgrade this month, and I currently have a Blackberry Bold 9000, and I really love it, I really do, but the web browsing is just well, not great, to say the least, but I really love the physical keyboard and BBM. The dilemma I am facing is that the Bold 9700 or Onyx, costs the same as the 32GB iPhone. The iPhone appeals to me because of all the apps, and the web browsing experience, but I really hate the touchscreen keyboard. I just dont know what to do.

I am 16, and I do 3-4 thousand texts a month so yeah texting and BBM is a big one to me. I also really like some of the apps in the App Store and Safari is great.

God I just wish AT&T had some Android phones thens there would be no contest, but there isn't so...

If you have not decided yet, go to crackberry.com and post your question there, see what they have to say, then you will have both sides of the story.

I use it to surf the internet. And the user experience when browsing the internet on an iPhone is, in every measurable sense, vastly superior to that of any Blackberry. Flash plugin or not.

Ah yes but can you listen to Pandora while you surf the internet?

I think not.

jailbreak, use backgrounder, you can use the package "music controls" to to skip songs while pandora is minimized.

While this is true, I think what @mawky was trying to convey is that you can do that without any modifications that may void your warranty on a Blackberry.

I think Blackberry is the future

Blackberry got us to where the smartphone market is today, whether its the future I don't know I would say that no device has really changed the game enough again to make the future. If anything, I would say Android is the closest thing to making the future, but at this point who knows...

Holy cow. You send 100-133 texts per day? Is there even time to talk face to face with that much texting?

That's true. RIM really hasn't innovated to keep pace with competitors though. All their new models (except the storm) are really just incrementally enhanced variations on the same theme they've been selling for 10 years. If they didn't have their installed user base, I doubt they'd be a factor in the (consumer) smartphone market at all. In my opinion, they will be in trouble sooner or later if they don't make a more significant effort to innovate in the face of rapidly increasing and improving competition. Their superior security and central management capabilities will keep them afloat in the business sector for some time, but they gotta step it up.

I was in the same boat last month. I had to choose between the Blackberry Tour or the iPhone 3GS. Both cost the same to me, and I also hated iPhones because of the touchscreen keyboard. To decide I bought a iPod Touch over the summer, really loved the great apps and games and learned to live with the touchscreen so I ended up with the 3GS.

Oh I could not agree more with you here, but with that said that is why I see Droid as a game changer because of all that it has to offer, and what the future holds for it is very promising based off what they have done so far. There is no doubt that RIM needs to make some significant changes though, because it really is an aging theme, and has been pretty much the same for the past 3 or 4 years.

hello all..

now im using bb 9700 a.k.a. onyx, but to be honest i feel very bored with that phone and i'm looking forward to replace it to iPhone..

but only several things that make i cant deal :

1. the battery
the battery in iPhone 3G s is very very improvident, is there any solution for that ?

2. there's no multitasking
i dont like phone that can not handle a lot of programs...

maybe you have the same problems with me...
give your opinion..

The battery is fine for me, i can usually go a couple of days before I need to charge....

I always have WIFI, 3G and location services on..... I listen to music for about 4 hours a day at my desk, make some calls and texts and check facebook..... I dont need to browse the net usually because I have that at my computer at work, and on my laptop when im at home....

I used to be paranoid about the battery, and used to have WIFI and 3G turned off unless I needed them, and used to have the brightness dimmed right down..... but the difference it makes for me on my usage is minimal.....

Virtual vs Real Keyboard

My other phone is a Nokia E-71 and has a great keyboard; every bit as good as the Blackberry (ok, actually the ancient Blueberry) I used to use. As an experiment, after buying the iPhone, I linked it up to the office Exchange server and left the E-71 (my email phone) at home.

Within two days, I was typing almost as fast on the iPhone as I can with the Nokia. As the iPhone learns my typing (and common mistakes) and with more practice, I expect that to get faster.

Will it be the right choice for the OP though? I don't know. The keyboard s a very personal thing.

Well I have already made my decision haha I am just waiting for my upgrade to roll around. My dad on the other hand is going through the same debacle, but he uses his phone for business. Funny enough many of the people in his company have made the switch to the iPhone and love it, but at the same time he doesn't know if he will be able to ever get used to the virtual keyboard as he has used physical phone keyboards his entire life.

Batt life is good under normal usage. But something like the iPhone is hard to use just normally.

Multitasking works surprising great when jailbroken and using backrounder. I never had any problem at all mutitasking.

I would say get the iPhone.

Out of those 3k+ texts you send a day odds are most are only a few words like Hi, No, Sure, Ya, See you in a bit etc. So its not like the physical kb is really that big of a deal since you arent composing 10 page papers.

Here is the big thing. You said you are only 16 so i take it you have just started driving or maybe you are in a state where you have to be 17 or 18 to drive. Anyways once you actually start driving, going to places, doing stuff with your friends you wont be texting that whole time so i would wager your number of txt messages would go down. More importantly the iPhone offers amazing apps for when you are doing stuff. Like Urbanspoon, Zagat or Yelp for food. Mixologist for those drinks you will surly make from your friends liquor cabinet. Or how about the facebook app (or just safari) for that random chick you will meet. Plus the easy access to google maps is awesome when you are lost or trying to find a place (like your friends house)

Not to mention jailbreaking adds a bunch of features that some people believe the iphone is missing (themes, background apps etc)

Did i mention the iphone will make you look cooler in front of your friends. Well not really since its keeping up with the jones but still that means the iphone > bb in terms of coolness.

All in all it just seems to me if you get over this whole kb thing the iphone would clearly be the better phone. Just because all you do is text right now doesn't mean thats all you will be doing in 1 yr.

Stupid BB can't even offer its users of option of saving a contact as home/work/mobile. It saves it to work by default and then you have to goto contacts, find the contact and then edit the contact.

Just my two cents.

I ended up trading my 3GS for a 9700 since I have a 3G lying around somewhere...

Anyways.

There is absolutely no way, and I mean NO WAY, that you can type faster on this BlackBerry than the iPhone.

iPhone > BB when it comes to typing.

I got this so I could use BBM and of course, I wanted to try it out. I do like a few features, but I also miss the iPod app, o well.

Anyways, I see why Apple doesn't have background apps. Yes it's nice that I have them, but it seriously slows down the phone...

So unless Apple has some super powerful god-like processor in the next iPhone, background apps will be a fail because people will just complain about the phone slowing down.

Would like to know what and how much apps you were backrounding, Cause I never had any slowing down problems multitasking apps. iPhone 3GS speed always seem the same to be.

I must say the new BB Bold is nice. Big improvement to previous models... But would I replace it for my iPhone? Nope!

Why?
- Browser
- Software
- No decent apps
- It's a bit ugly
- Horrible keyboard imho...
