The new iPhone CAN'T have a different screen size.
Why do you believe this?
I know it CAN! It probably won't this time around though.
The new iPhone CAN'T have a different screen size.
no it CANT because every app in the appstore would NOT be compatible with the new iphone.. there would have to be a completly different sdk and everysingle app would have to be re worked and devs would have to make two different versions of the exact same app to be compatible with the 3g and the bigger screen size and the appstore would have to be completely different so 3g owners and new owners knew which app and appsize to buy...
so yeah there CANT be a bigger screen
I went to a iPhone developer convention in Los Angeles a few months ago, and at the conference they were telling developers to make sure their applications were resolution independent and how to do that. They said that while it was unlikely that Apple would come out with new hardware for the iPhone OS that had a different resolution screen, it would still be a good idea to be ready for the inevitable.
The iPhone's display is 320x480 and is 3.5" diagonal. They could make a smaller or bigger iPhone OS device that has the same resolution and none of the problems you listed would exist. Applications are geared towards a display's resolution, rather than a display's physical size.
thanks for setting me straight .. i was wrong.. and at least i admit it when i know i am and instead of continuing to argue when the stacks of evidence show otherwise
Anyway, I think we all have the bezel thing upside down, and that this is more likely what we will see at WWDC:

Uhm... Your image makes little sense. Towards the bottom right, camera button (Granted, no one really knows wth that is, but I'll call it that for now) is still there, despite it also being there in the ORIGINAL leaked photo of the bezel front plate on its own.
On a side-note, it probably WON'T be uncomfortable... I've owned a MOTO KRZR:

The speaker is just as close to the top at the current mock-ups and it never presented a problem to me... The only way i can see it actually being uncomfortable or otherwise painful is if the user insisted on shoving it into their ear as if it would be that much clearer.

Even if Apple did come out with a device that has a different display resolution, I'm sure they're be able to do it without the world coming to an end like you described. If we could put a man on the moon and bring him safely back to earth 40 years ago, then surely Apple can make a phone with a different screen resolution without causing world panic and destruction like you outlined.

I...don't think...so. The current placement of the microphone is just fine. And this pic shows the speaker/mic set up is the same as the current iPhone 3G.

The bottom would obviously look the same, only it would have two speakers instead of one and a mic.
The current speaker location is fine too, so what makes you think they'd move it but not the microphone?
Bring back the chrome bezel!

I remember an article linking to the same information you give here. Basically it said the same thing you're saying about developers need to be sure and make resolution independant apps.
I'll try and dig the link up if I find the time today.

What makes you think the larger opening on the front is a microphone and not an earpiece then? There was only one opening on the front face of leaked pics of it, so it has to be an earpiece, IMO.
This is really picky, but I think the person who took this pic would orient the part in relationship to how it fits onto the iPhone.

i actually think that it's a good idea. and pretty practical. Look at your iPhone now...is the earpiece a part of your bezel? I know mine isn't. So if the earpiece on the new iPhone is in the same position as the current gens, the leaked bezel photo wouldn't, in fact, show an opening for the earpiece.
i think its feasible that we may be looking at that bezel upside down. I think it would definitely be an upgrade over what we have now.
but what about the holes on the left side for the ringer switch and volume controls... i doubt apple would remove them because most people are right handed so the hold the iphone with there right hand putting there fingers on the left side. but i would like to have the microphone like that on the bottom but i doubt thats the case. i do see your argument and im not trying to bash you, just pointing out that in terms of ergonomics its very unlikely that the bezel is upside down.

anybody understand what im trying to say? im saying it doesnt seem like the new bezel exposes itself around the whole phone..just the top part basically..any feedback?
Yes.
I said the same thing in post #36 of this thread - with images as well.
The bezel used for these mock-ups clearly doesn't encompass the whole device, yet nobody has incorporated that aspect of the "leak."
