OK mate, compare away. I supposed you'll be straight on facebook after you get it, telling everyone how good it is, please tell me why it (iPhone4) is good?

Nope... Mate... Not on Facebook blah, blah, blahing away. I've owned every iPhone. Every single iPhone has been an improvement in some way over its predecessor (it's a well known strategy of Apple's to incrementally update the features of their products - and it's works just fine for me and them). In this edition, even though I have yet to even activate the thing, I will enjoy a display that is 4 times "sharper" than the 3GS (and yes, it is markedly different, in a good way), as well as a solid well built form factor that with the right protection will stay incredible for years (like a fine German car - and yes, I always protect my iDevices, and yes I'm well aware I'll probably only own it for a year or so). I'll enjoy an incredible 5MP camera with flash, and since we all already know MP isn't the whole story, lets just say the pictures I've seen taken with it are stunning. Furthermore, a front facing camera that will in-fact over time change the way we communicate whether you want to believe it or not (mainly because one of the most popular mobile devices on earth will offer it).

But you want to know the REAL reason why I just spent 8 hours in line (or on line as you say) for the "over hyped" piece of technology? Actually it's because I like to take things a step further and take full control of my device via the jailbreak - and after doing it for over 3 years, I know that the initial release of every iDevice is always the most susceptible to exploits and hacks. Call it what you want; tell me that I'm proving your point by saying I want to hack my phone... But to me, it's what makes it really mine. Something I enjoy.

Just got a call that they received their second shipment. Gonna pick up my 32GB iphone during lunch break! I'll be upgrading from a Nokia6230 that I've had for the last 5 years -- batteries are finally dying, and I can live w/ a $15 data fee.

I tried preordering and their system prevented me from doing so for the first week. Of course I'm being dazzled by the hype, but what's wrong with that? You could certainly wait another week or two for Apple's shipment, but there's that sense of camaraderie w/ early adoption, waiting in line, etc. There's some similarities to why people pay 3x the cost at the grocer to drink the same beer in a bar.

The last 25 or so books I've read have been on my iPhone 3GS. The screen update alone is a huge deal to me.

I do understand where you're coming from with people waiting in line for a product. I always remember the line from Fight Club (everyone should read the book!) where he says that 'the things you own end up owning you, only when you have nothing can you do anything.' It's always important to think about how you spend your time, but you also have to understand that it's okay for other people to do something that makes them happy if it isn't hurting anyone else.

Personally, I will not stand in line for much of anything because my time is too valuable and I'd rather be doing something else. Instead I'm on a couple wait lists for the new iPhone and will get it when I get it. What I will not do though is begrudge those who do stand in line because I'm sure there are things that I enjoy doing that someone else will think is a complete waste of time.

just picked up my 32GB from AT&T in Fort Myers FL. They did in fact still have a line. When i was paying they mentioned they only had 3 16GBs left and it was from their second shipment of the day.

Goodness that was quick.
Personal attacks are usually used as a last resort. (you know when reason fails)
Probably he believed that since you began with a personal attack that was the only language you could understand. (You know, when reason fails...).

Try Walmart

I went to the local Walmart yesterday and they had just received 10 16gig iPhone 4's. It took about 10 minutes to upgrade two iPhones and there was no line. Just FYI...

AT&T Store in San Jose, Across from Oakridge Mall

Walked in at 10:35 this morning just hoping to get on a waiting list for the afternoon shipment; put my name on the sign in sheet and less than 10 minutes later was called up and told that they actually had "plenty" in stock.

Total time spent in store: 20 minutes, walked out with my 32GB still sealed in cellophane and ready for me to unbox at home.

Awesome. :D

.

i pre ordered my iphone on the 15th. didn't get an update til the 18th. then on the 22nd saying it was being processed. It said that on the 18th. and now it still says processing on the 29th? 14 days later? still waiting on my iphone. while ATT told me they would fufill all the ATT pre orders before the 28th? im still waiting an ATT is starting to sell the iphone 4 again while those that pre ordered are still waiting. make me wonder why im waiting on my order rather than not wait in line!!!

Sounds like they had enough stock at most places. I don't regret getting there early and waiting in line, to me it was worth the hassle. Better to waste an hour and a half waiting in line with an almost 100% guarantee of getting one than to risk waiting to the last minute and being disappointed.

Got mine at lunch and even with the lunch rush I only waited a few minutes for them to take care of three people in front of me and they got right to me, hooked up my 32gb machine and I was out 10 minutes later with a working phone. The real time killer has been restoring it as my old phone so that I can have all my apps and music on it.

was in tallahasssee biggest att on magnolia got there at 2:50 left with 32gb at 7:48 am lol what a wait but awesomeeee

Loved the nokia 6230!!! Mine's still going!!! :)
Waiting for the white iphone still.

Obscure humor...

I don't get this.
Everyone is getting high on Apple products... so much so that pretty much every year we cue for hours, or days to buy them.... especially during an economic down turn.
Pretty much that's it... White lines... I dunno.. I just like the rap :D
Grand Master Flash.
i was just watching some 80's rock whilst reading mac news... :D

I must say I was pretty surprised about the hype of the new iPhone, but I did not follow the launch of the original or any of the updates. Until last year, I didn't really have a need for a smartphone. I was in front of a computer all day and had one at home. With my current job, I don't have access to a computer and therefore email, calender, etc. My wife and I are with Sprint which contracts expired in May. By that time, we knew there would be a new version of the iPhone coming so we decided to wait to get them, only because we heard about better battery life which is a very important feature for me.

Another reason I want an iPhone is that I am tired of carrying both my phone and my iPod everywhere I go. It'll be nice to carry one device for that. While I don't think I'd fit in very well, I think it would be fun to wait in line for the phone. The only thing I've waited in line for were concert tickets and that was 15 years ago. But due to work, I couldn't wait in line.

We did try ordering online but "your order could not be completed" on both Apple and AT&T. So I got a break today and stopped by a Livonia, MI AT&T store around 9:30 today. They were out of the 32gb phones so I ordered 2 and they should ship in 7-10 days.

It's sad to see people judging others. We all have our own unique pieces of happiness. If getting a new cell phone first is someone's, it should not matter to anyone else.

I went to the ATT store in the Deptford Mall around 8:15 am and I was in and out in 10 minutes. I was the only one in line.

iPhone 4 - Waiting in line

Apple needs to get that iPhone 4 OS fix out pronto. I bought three iPhone 4's already & am really frustrated with the obvious bugs in the OS.

I even stopped filling out bug slips in Radar (Apple's internal bug tracker).

We need a much more stable OS & then this phone would be 110% 'off the hook' :apple:

I am not bitter it just saddens me how sophisticated marketing had become. To the point where people will buy a product they know to be faulty and to que for it. I feel sorry for the people who think these products will make their life better some how as apple implies in their advertising. I also know some people out there will buy this product when they can not afford it and have to make sacrifices or get into debt for the sake of having a gadget that is pretty much the same as most other cell phones.

Cell phone enthusiasts have had the wool pulled overt their eyes since day one, it is an incredible profit for some of the worlds largest corporations.

I wouldn't mind if I saw regular posts from people expressing how the phone has "changed the way we communicate" or how they made this great home movie edit. No! All you hear is them saying the iphone is great, it's shiny, it's put me in debt!

If it was a device that did something we could have only dreamed of in the past that could actually make our lives better I could understand. But at the end of the day it is just a cell phone the only way it has changed the way we communicate is by talking about the device itself because it has been upgraded. If I can make one person decide to spend there money on music paint audio/video/photo software anything actually good for the mind I will be very happy.

Wow, you need to get over yourself.

Vast majority of people buying an iPhone 4 are not on macrumors.com

Used a Razr phone before I got an iPhone and yes it's totally changed the way my partners and I do our business. There are things about the iPhone 4 that will even enhance what we do more. In my chamber of commerce, business owners with iPhones are the majority now. Usually when you see a Blackberry phone it's not a small business owner, it's a sales rep or employee of a larger company or a bank. I've yet to see anyone using an android phone. The massive shift in the last year has been very noticeable. Many of these people are waiting like me till they can just go in pick one up of course because time is money.
