I ordered mine through the app store and in the confirmation process it gave me the $299 32GB Black iPhone 4G option. When I look at the confirmation email it has all the rate plan information blank with a price of $699 at the bottom. I am eligible for the $299 price.

Has anyone else seen the same thing? I am guessing that maybe the app store app is quicker because they are circumventing the ATT check and just planning on sorting it out in store on launch day?

Yup, I'm in the same boat.

That happened to me and I called the store. They had no record of my reservation. They told me to reserve it via the iPhone App. I did that successfully and got the e-mail confirmation. It reflected the 699 price and no plan chosen. I just got off the phone with a person from the store where I was told that price and lack of plan was to be expected and that when I arrive at the store, everything will be straightened out to be the correct price and plan.

Suh-weet. I think I'll call my local store to confirm as well.

Really?

Really? Apple and AT&T haven't yet figured out how to prepare for rushes like this? They haven't realized that this devices will spark unimaginable feeding frenzies? They haven't prepared their servers or built bigger ones to take on this kind of volume? I guess not. AT&T is a phone company that daily drops almost every phone call I make. Why should I expect anything more? Arghh.

Use the Apple Store app on your Iphone.

Quick and easy got my email confirmation in 2 minutes after I submitted my request.

Hope this helps.

I did htis as well but the email reflects the retail price and not my upgrade price

ORDERED for shipment...

...via the AT&T Wireless website. Shipment is not guaranteed for the 24th, it said, but I'll take my chances at this point. Got tired of trying to do it through Apple, and AT&T's site was back up and running smoothly, so I went that route.

Try that, guys.

I got one as well but it is saying $699

I know I am eligable for the upgrade so I am not really sure what to do...

I got this as well. Called the Apple store I reserved at and they said it's a mistake. That it's just to warn you that if you are not eligible that's what the price will be.

Only took four hours

FINALLY got my reservation for the new iPhone. Only took four hours. Finally did it in the iphone application and I received an email confirmation 5-10 minutes later. I think it was the AT&T server that kept crashing and wonder if new orders went through more quickly

About 2 hours ago I finally got both my orders to go through on ATT's site, only to just receive an email from ATT that my order has been cancelled:

"Unfortunately, we were either unable to verify the information you provided or you have exceeded the number of lines of service that we allow customers to purchase online. As a result, your order has been canceled."

I knew it was too good to be true that both my orders processed!

Did you enter it as a credit card?

As soon as i walked into the store a lady made an announcement that said No cash, No debit cards, only major credit cards accepted. That's ludacris i just left as soon as i heard that nonsense

I did htis as well but the email reflects the retail price and not my upgrade price

This is what happened with mine too. My local Apple Store confirmed that it will be sorted out on the day of pickup.

My theory is that Apple changed how this works on the fly to not connect through AT&T so that the preorders would go through easier.

Did anyone notice this at the bottom of the confirmation e-mail (after having reserved via the app)?

"Pre-authorization does not guarantee iPhone availability at an Apple Retail Store. iPhone is sold on a first-come, first-served basis."

Does this mean that they're NOT going to hold one in my name until the end of the day? What does "pre-authorization" mean?

OK, so weirdly, I got an error saying my request couldn't be processed but offered to reserve one at my local Apple Store for the full ($699.00) price. So, what the hell, I clicked "reserve" and now have an email. I'm guessing there'll be one there with my name on it and the Apple kids can do the pre-qualification again and fix the price thing. Fingers crossed. But still trying to reserve a second one just in case.
Yes I tried that route as well. But when I got the email saying $699 I cancelled pronto. I will stay with trying to order for delivery. Hope your plan works out, I am not a good gambler.

from iLounge:

. iLounge has been told that both companies are working to fix the issues, and the representative we spoke with was hopeful the issues would be resolved within a few hours. The problems, for which Apple and AT&T have not apologized, began with the unexpected last-minute unavailability of white iPhone 4 devices, an issue that now seems trivial in light of the massive system failures that have blocked orders of other models as well.

So the questions is...How much of this is a result of capacity.

Apple's Evil Genius

I hate to break it to everyone, but Apple (and AT&T) knew this was going to happen.

Why? Because it is a much better story, and will attract more local, national and international media coverage than if everything had gone smoothly - which in turn will create more demand, and ultimately increase sales.

The 0.0002% of you who will become so frustrated to jump to other smartphones will pale in comparison to the tens of thousands of others who will see and hear about this commotion and say "They must be on to something. I have to have one!"

It may be evil - but it is also the genius of Apple's PR and marketing machine. :)

I successfully reserved one using the phone app, but when I try to do the 2nd phone on my account, I keep getting "Could not create your reservation at this time. Please try again later..."

I'm not sure if this is a coding problem and it won't allow me to do more than 1 on my account or if the reservations system is hosed again. Anyone else been able to reserve more than 1 with your account info?
