This should just not be happening full stop (period).

I feel gutted for anyone who has a defective phone (yellow spots or signal problems). I still have my 3GS and will be waiting a few weeks to see what happens from here...

What the frig have Apple gone and done? It's a total and utter sham from start to finish. People queueing for up to 8 hours only to find there hugely expensive new gadget is defective.

I have lost a LOT of faith in Apple now. It's a sad day.

so i got my phone only had it a couple hours i did notice a small yellow blotch on the bottom left corner and it already seems to be going away. i called apple to make sure i reported it on the first day and the lady said she didn't hear about this problem but i told what i read online and she trusted so my case is on file if it comes back or gets worse. i also have noticed the reception problem but my hand isnt usally in that corner and i plan on buying a good case for this beauty.

i also turned the brightness up all the way i think that might have helped i actually just looked agian and i cant even see it

Is it me or do people need to stop blaming the bonding agent and maybe have a look at the way it is used?
...snip...
It is a functionalising agent used to improve adhesion, not for actual adhesion itself - any solvents present are baked off prior to assembly, not after two bits of glass have been pressed together. Maybe the actual adhesive they use is dark brown, who knows, but it must be pretty dark for the extremely thin layer (try pressing two flat glass surfaces together with some ketchup between..) to show up as much as it does.

At last. Someone else who took the time to check it out.

As you said, the agent is supposed to be clear or a "light straw color" according to Corning.

Reading the instructions, there are two ways of using that agent. One way is to mix it in with the glue, but the recommended method is to use it as a primer... spraying or dipping it on, then letting it dry first, then using the glue.

Could be worse. How about queuing up for 8 hours only to find that you and everyone behind you has to go home empty handed.

+1. What a lame system they have at the retail stores. I reserved mine at Legacy Village in Cleveland (I'm away from home and Apple would only ship my iPhone 4 to my AT&T service address) and had the same experience. Hundreds of people with reserved phones lined up, waiting 3-4 hours to get a phone.

Apple has clearly reached a point where they just feel like they can treat their customers like crap. I mean, with X number of reservations, it wouldn't take a math major to figure out how many employees you need activating iphones to keep the wait below, say, 30 minutes.

This is my first experience with any of the release-day debacles, and this was just piss poor planning/service from Apple.

I don't want to jinx myself but it appears my yellow spot and streak is fading with continued usage. Using it a while to get warm and then Setting it aside to cool seems to help rather than letting it stay hot for as long as you can. I think this helps with the bonding evap. Process.

Like I said. I have seen a reduction thus far since I got my phone this morning. I showed it to my wife when I got home. And a again later at bedtime and she can tell it has reduced a good deal.

DMann, you may have touched on the truth. What if the lamination process is hand-set and that splotch is due to finger oils when the operator lays the two layers together? A definite issue of workmanship, if true.

One would imagine that the workers were wearing latex gloves while assembling layers.

Apparently, the excessive laminate tends to clear up once it is thoroughly dried.

Hopefully, this is the case.

I have an orangish spot which is clearly visible.

Here's the picture.

Houston, We Have a Blotch

Okay, so I'll give it a few days to repair itself. After that, I'll be miffed because how can one easily just waltz into the Apple store and exchange a phone that's out of stock?

Foxconn doesn't mess up, ppl who are overreacting to every little thing on the iPhone do.

yay

waited 3 hrs in line afterwork and was 2nd to last to get an iPhone. Lol dude right behind me gave his spot to dude behind him for 21$ it was a fun n crazy eve. :) I checked my phone no issues so far :)

My iPhone 4 started out with two blotches and a general yellow cast over the top area of the screen. After some use and sitting overnight it's totally gone. :)

I noticed the yellow band since I unboxed the iPhone.
The band stretches across the bottom of the screen from one edge to the other.

It is quite prominent when I scrolled a light coloured page up and down.
Cooling it down or heating it up doesn't seem to make it fade away.

Spoken with online Apple Store (UK), they couldn't replace it since because they haven't got new available.

They also recommended that I continue to use it for another 2 to 3 days in case that "glue dries up", meaning that they tacitly recognise the glue problem.

I think I will order another one to see if I am lucky enough to get one with a good screen and eventually return this one within the 14-day period.

My Experience

Here's what happened with mine. I got my iPhone 4 in on Wednesday the 23rd, and noticed the splotches. Called Apple and the guy was very helpful. He told me they would take care of it and he called my local Apple store and said I could take it in Thursday morning (I wouldn't have to wait in line) and exchange it for a new one. I was unable to take it in until Thursday afternoon so I decided to call first because I knew it would be a mad house. The guy I spoke to said they didn't have the stock to offer a replacement but probably would early next week but he wasn't sure. So, I called the service rep I spoke to at Apple back (He gave me his extension so I could be sure to get him back). He apologized profusely for the store not being accomidating. He then told me he would be happy to overnight me a new one. My conversation with him took place about 4:30PM yesterday and my new one arrived at 9:00AM this morning. I don't know if this screen blotch thing is going to be a major issue or not, but I have to commend Apple (or at least the service rep I delt with) for handling the problem. Less than 18 hours for them to ship and me receive a new one. There was no hassle and he didn't hessitate to send me a new one. He also guaranteed it would be a new phone and not a refurb....he said he didn't think they even had any refurbs yet to give out. Unfortunately I haven't been home long enough to see if the new one has the same screen issue but if it does I'm sure they will continue to replace it until I get a perfect one. BTW after about two and a half days of heavy use the blotches are still on my original one.

Yellow splotching on my screen seems to be slowly disappearing. I even made sure to get my phone nice a toasty by running wifi and browsing the internet for a while and play a game for a little bit. I checked the lower part of my screen with the flashlight app and the yellowing has greatly reduced. At this point its not even noticeable unless you look really hard for it when the device is warmed up. Where as before when I got my phone it was really obvious barely warm.

I recommend highly recommend using your phone getting it nice and toasty for a while and then sitting your phone aside to cool down. I think this helps speed up the evaporation process with the bonding agent. because after being frustrated the first day the spots were staring me in the face I sat the phone aside while I went and cut grass for an hour. came back and played with my phone for a while..this time i noticed when it got warn/hot the spots were not as noticeable. it has only improved since.

P.S. no reception issues at all here. Also I bought an iFrogz case later that night at bestbuy and my phone reception is actually a lot better than my 3gs ever was. call quality and clarity has improved over 3gs and I get better signal in my house than before than my 3gs. Wifi range has greatly improved. I couldn't be happier with iPhone4 given the yellowing issue has dissipated...yesterday i was pi$$ed.

all better

i had a spot on the bottom right that wasn't too bad but knowing it was there drove me crazy. the uncured glue problem makes sense so i sped up the curing process. i put my phone by the window with full sun to get some uv rays and heat to help cure it. it sure did heat up fast. i forgot about it and checked it after 20 minutes and my phone was pretty hot, hot enough to get a temp warning on the phone, but no harm done since it would have to be super duper hot to damage anything, i turned on the screen and the spot was a lil more pronounced and noticed a few more faint spots on the bottom. I Just let it cool for a bit then put it back in the sun for 5-10 minute intervals, cool, repeat, did that for an hour and let my phone set. After it cooled down my screen was perfect. Used it 3 hours straight last with web browsing, some games and the spot never came back. nothing like some heat and uv rays to help cure the glue

I tried the same , but no luck....back to the store for me!

Get your phone swapped at the store. I went and got a replacement and it's perfect. No issues on screen at all.. made sure!

Mine was getting worse , not better! Glad I got rid of it.

Curious, if the new phone was cold out of the box at the store when you checked it, how could you be sure the problem wouldn't occur after some use and getting warm?
