Why do people keep saying the new iPhone was delayed? A delay means Apple promised one thing and delivered another. Apple never promised anyone a new iPhone in July of 2011, or a new iPhone every 12 months.

I think they're also afraid of pissing off Verizon iPhone customers by releasing a complete overhaul within ~9 months

seems likely it will be a 4s

question is why you all upgrade if the improves are A5 chip, better camera, more ram?

be interesting if the assistant touch will be available on the iphone 4.

it will be .. even is apple does not put it in the jailbreakers will... every feature from 4s will be on 4 in 4 months...lol

worst part is no one will know if you have the "new" iphone 4s or the old iphone 4...lol no need to upgrade at all..

There will be lovers and haters no matter what happens tomorrow.

There will be many people on here who have reached a state of almost climax imagining an Apple product that is their ultimate fantasy. Then no matter how good the new iPhone is it could never meet their high expectations and two minutes after the keynote they will be on here hating it.

If Indeed it is only a 4/ 4S

If it's only a 4 / 4s, then I bet you that the redesigned iPhone will debut this June, making the 4 generation line up nicely with their 2 year cycle, and probably the 5 will be the one with LTE.

And that is why, though I am on a 3Gs, I'll pass. There is no way I am buying a pimped up iPhone 4.

Everybody calm down... You've all built too much expectative on the tear-drop enclosure. Perhaps a bigger screen, I'll acknowledge many people want that (though problematic it would be, regarding resolution and compatibility),

Just because it's the same form factor doesn't mean it's a minor upgrade.
Just because it's called "4S" doesn't mean it's a minor upgrade.

The 3GS brought us a substantially better GPU (shaders, anyone?), twice the RAM, compass, Video recording...

If you feel you shouldn't upgrade from your iPhone 4, so be it! News flash: there's 2-year contracts for one reason. Perhaps we're not suppose to get the latest gadgets every time... think of the Earth :)

Peace

I will surprised and disappointed if the new iPhone is simply a beefed up iPhone 4. When the 3GS came out it was a huge improvement over the outgoing model and was a turning point in many people finally adopting an iPhone. The iPhone 4 was a flawed device - a poor design, uncomfortable to hold, reception problems and a screen / back made of brittle glass that shattered too often.

Whilst updated internals are always welcome and iOS 5 is fantastic the lack of marrying that to an improved design is a poor show from Apple and I suspect many will not upgrade their iPhone 4 to a 4S.

perfectly stated....!!! all hey had to do was fix the antenna and make the screen bigger and everyone would be happy.. nut noooooo...!! they give is this 4s BS..

oh and what about all the data embargoes that are going on now how will the cloud BS make sense if data is soo limited and expensive and the speeds are slowed down cause you use alot...lololool

----------

When I said it's not an iPhone 5, I was referring to the fact that this iPhone 4s will not have the legit and substantial improvements (be it external and internal improvements) compared to the iPhone 5. And the fact that apple will be making more profit out of the iphone4s doesnt mean jack to me AT ALL. How does their profit matter to the consumer???

welcome to capitalism

I can't imagine Apple would take 4 more months (Oct. release instead of the usual June release) to get the next iPhone right and only have an iPhone 4S and not a redesigned iPhone 5.

I would agree, however it may have been software holding up the release rather than hardware.

I think it's a 50/50 chance for an all new design iPhone 5 on Tuesday. I'm really hoping for it, but not getting my hopes up.

Is there any rumor of the front facing camera being upgraded?

Is there any rumor of the mobile networks' bandwidth becoming able to support facetime any time soon, at the current resolution?

...You're right, no point in upgrading the front-facing camera.

If this is true, I'll be picking up that Samsung GS2 as soon as possible. Eff Apple if they are going to pull this nonsense.

I have a little hope left for the 5 version. Something is just telling me I will be disappointed though! I would love a redesign, I was never a fan of the 4's square shape.

Apple has fueled the hysteria with their secretive way of conducting business. I don't blame them...it works wonders for them.

From a marketing standpoint, a 4S doesn't sound nearly as appetizing as a 5. If you compare it to a software release, the iPhone 4S would only fix bugs from the original 4 release. It would also include some minor upgrades.

I just want to fastforward 26 hours.

Could well be. A high end iPod with bigger screen, better camera, and Wifi phone capability.

hold on...! that will be the dumbest thing to do .. make an ipod that is better than the iphone..?? wow this will be the beginning of the fall of apples dominance then..

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the 3gs a spec bump that came out at the same time as IOS3? The attraction was the new features of IOS3 that took advantage of the better specs. I'm sorta getting the same vibe this time around.

I have to ask how so many here seem to have come to the conclusion that people want a bigger screen on their phones. Don't both the iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS carry a 3.5" screen? Aren't these two handsets the number one and number two best selling smartphone worldwide?

You have to look at this differently to the normal tech type approach. Apple sells iPhones. Not smartphones. iPhones. They call it an iPhone, not a Smartphone. You see what I'm getting at? While many people buy it because they want a smartphone, most buy it because they want an iPhone! In the end the only real competition Apple has is itself because no one out there does what Apple does. If you want access to the App Store, if you want to use iTunes to handle your music and buy new media, if you want to use Facetime and, in iOS5, Assistant and the clever new alerts system, then you need to buy an iPhone.

Now I know that many of you will say that you can do the same things and achieve the same results on other smartphones. This is true. But you are not the audience. This is why there's always so much moaning on forums like this compared to the, forgive me, real world where year after year Apple's iPhone scores the best customer feedback results of the lot.

You and I do not represent the normal people. We make up a small fraction of the marketplace. We are vocal but then we only talk to each other. The rest of the world isn't here on Macrumors every day. The rest of the world doesn't think about this stuff the way we do. So while you and I might spend the time finding the apps and configuring the handset so we can do the stuff that the iPhone does out of the box and while we may be happy to use various bits of software to manage the device and we may know the differences between various versions of firmware etc, the average person doesn't know about or want to deal with this. So he or she is looking for the best complete package. A system that comes nicely connected up. No learning curve. That's the selling point Apple has. That's why people buy iPhones. No one else offers such a complete package and with the over the air updates and autobackup to the cloud that iOS 5 brings the learning curve is getting even smaller.

So if what you want is a bigger screen then go for it. You're entitled to choose the product that's right for you. But don't imagine that you and your friends represent the masses. Don't confuse a few hundred people banging on about bigger screens and NFC here on Macrumors or on various other tech sites with the mass market who couldn't give a sod. Askt the average person when the iPhone 4 came out and he probably won't know. So he's not going to think "wow, this new phone is the same shape and design as the one that came out 16 months ago?". See? We are not normal!

I don't know what I'm right about, because I didn't say that.

As a non-iPhone owner all I'm getting from this is-

In 2010 Apple released a phone that was so advanced that when they made a successor it wasn't that much improved, because there was nowhere else to go.

And I'm struggling to see the problem, frankly!

While a re-design would be nice. It's not a must for me-

All I ask for are 3 things-

1. 64GB
2. HSPA+
3. Call it the iPhone 5 no matter what. iPhone 4S makes zero sense.

I'm still using my original iPhone so any upgrade will be nice for me.

welcome to capitalism

taken completely out of context. Plus, you should thank capitalism for all of Apple's great products AND their fantastic customer service. Not blame capitalism for one product not being exactly how you like it

These two posts confirm Apple need not update the design to sell it.

See what Apple does?;)

I'm only upgrading because my three year old son decided to jump into the pool by himself. I ended up jumping in after him, with my 3GS in my pocket. I would have kept the 3GS another year if I had to wait for a major upgrade to the phone.

I'm currently without any kind of cell phone right now.
