i don't know who reviewed the audio and concluded the droid was better. Im watching the 720p video here of droid and iphone comparison. and seriously. ive been working in the audio world for same time now as audio engineer. and the iphone records better quality audio then the droid, yes droid is louder, yes droid sounds fuller, but its software based gained as i hear it. the iphone sounds alot more crisp and comes more into range of an actual recording microphone, does filter alot of bg sound. (and yes im listening on pro studio monitors.)

Who are you to say how people should configure their TVs? What is a measurement of picture quality? Is it like measuring the length of a line? No of course not, it is a subjective process weighted by the viewer's own perception.
It's quite easy. The picture of a TV should be a faithful reproduction of the original image. It doesn't take a genius to see when the color is turned up too high if people look like their skintone was laid down with magic markers, the sky is bluer than it really exists in a location, and you can't see shadow detail properly and highlights are blown out due to poor contrast setting.

Folks say the image is "better" because of how extreme the effect on their eyes. Colors that are bright and extreme changes between dark and light will do that. But that doesn't mean that the higher the effect the better the picture is.

As for the audio, someone just posted support:

I hear what you are talking about on with my own videos. How would you recommend I make my narrative videos I shoot on my iPhone 4 have more audible sound? Simply boost the audio level in FCP?

Lol

I'm sure it's been mentioned 1000x before but, is this article some sort of a joke? They don't even define what categories were used to judge the quality of the pictures or videos. Looking through the pics, I thought the pic they ranked as "best" looked the worst.

Trash article. But then again, it is from Macworld magazine. No bias there.

I've been really pleased with the iPhone 4 camera so far, particularly in low light. The 2g was pretty terrible, and now I can also not feel so bad for not hauling the DSLR around and missing good photo ops. Very happy with the new iPhone!

Just run it through iMovie's stabilization feature. See, it's an all-encompassing ecosystem.... :)

What I was most impressed with was the audio quality. While MacWorld thought the iPhone's mic inferior, I actually preferred the sound of it. The Droid had that electret mic "tinniness" to it, while the iPhone sounded more like a professional mic.

+1.

I found the Droid's tinniness really annoying. I much prefer the iPhone's based on those videos.

to get more audible sound you could use FCP, since it uses more parameters a phone can handle (simply cause its real time recording and good gains do need rendering). Just import footage. and if ur voice is the loudest sound in the video (so if theres no loud screaming on bg and hands clapping etc.) select audio track -> go to modify on top -> audio -> apply normalization gain. should get ur audio right up to between -6 and -4 DB. if u want to get an even better result you could also use the soundtrack pro app in the package. and use the gain effect in there.

edit: since phones usually have BG noize you can filter that out using the equalizer in soundtrack pro. be carefull not to eliminate too much frequencies in the voice thou, but this is only if u want to make things more pro then they are. you should be fine with just the FCP normalization gain.

I'm glad everyone is happy with it, but I dont understand how to set it to 720P. I captured some video, transferred it to youtube and it only was listed as 320P and 240P, no 720p option at all there.

I tried the video on my iphone4 vs my buddies evo. Needless to say iPhone 4 FTW. I would have thought the evo would win since it is a "better" camera. Guess the software is better in the iphone

It's nice to hear the camera compares well. I watched the video and I agree the Droid colors look a little more rich. Keep the competition coming. :)

Now in all fairness, given some time, I'm sure HTC will build an army of droids which, combined, will surpass the iPhone. They've clearly started already. lmao. It seems that people still need to be taught that MP count isn't everything. They'll still choose the Droid X simply by American principle that More Is Better.

Another vote for accurate colour representation. I really like the look of the iphone4 footage.

I'm VERY glad the iphone4 doesn't do colour like that droid video. "Punchy" colour should either be an option on the camera or done in post, it should never be the default and only choice.

You can shoot in 720P and edit in iMovie in 720P and export with iMovie in 720P. But you can't upload to YouTube in 720P. It's a stupid limitation but probably there because if they allowed uploading to YouTube in 720P in WiFi, some hacker will trick it into thinking it's on WiFi and AT&T's network will be even worse than it is now.

Some could argue that the non-"punchy" color of video taken by the iPhone 4 should be an option, not default. :p

Macworld rated the Apple smartphone picture and video quality better than all of the other smartphones. Go figure. How often does Macworld rate an Apple product less than 4 stars?

Did they post the original video files anywhere?

I'm having a hard time believing the Flip beat the iPhone on video quality...

Jim

Wow, audio is way way better on the iPhone. The droid sounds like a cheap electret mic (think radioshack) while the iPhone sounds like it could record music and sound halfway decent/realistic.

Yes... how do those poor people go on about their lives, knowing that the iPhone records 6 more frames per second than their phones?

I bet we will see a string of suicides in the next weeks, with each victim clutching their EVOs with a note explaining how they couldn't live any longer knowing that more megapixels doesn't automatically make a better image.

i would say poor evo owners because the only network worse than ATT is sprint! i love sprint's pricing but is cheap good when you can't make a call in your own home!!!
