So where's that guy who kept posting here on MacRumors that there was no way Apple would call their next iPhone the 4S because it would upset the naming scheme? Ahahahahahhahahaha :D

Probably the same guy that would bet his house that the Redesigned IPhone 5 was coming out.

I'm seriously thinking about replacing my dumbphone/iPod touch/Canon point-and-shoot digicam combo with the iPhone 4S.

I'm interested at seeing how Apple will price unsubsidized factory-unlocked iPhone 4S models.

Yep. already listed my nano/android on ebay. wondering if the point and shoot can be replaced as well since I would rather use an SLR when I can afford it in coming years and I never ever EVER take my point and shoot out.

Cool... no need for you to post any more of your negative bs here. Run on over to the Win 7 forum and scream how crappy the 4s is there, they will agree with you. FFS make the move and be happy. No one is making you buy the 4s.

Isn't your username "negative BS" for this forum?

There will be lines. People aren't too bright at times.

I'm sure there will be lines, but I'm also sure that you'll be able to walk into any AT&T, Verizon or Sprint store a few days later and walk out with one. I expect a lot of people to buy them, but not enough to make it a hassle to get one.

I think this upgrade sucks, but they will sell boatloads of this phone.

Of course they will sell! Millions of people still have their 3G and 3GS' and have been waiting since June to upgrade. If an individual with either has never seen an iPhone 5 mockup or never read an apple rumor blog, this is exactly what they've been waiting for! IMO, regular consumers will love it, Fanboys will love it and enthusiasts will hate it.

It is curious how thick the lines will be this year. Hopefully it won't be embarrassing; many people I know with an i4 have no interest or are ineligible. The press has been mixed, but the tech world seems rather lukewarm to the news.

Personally I think where Apple fudged up was they released the info too far ahead before they set a release date, the momentum was lost after wwdc, they could have simply shown iOS 5, and Lion and said nothing of iCloud, then waited till today and unleashed a plethora of goodies on us, I feel like it was all supposed to be part of the package, but iCloud is kind of "old news" even though it hasn't come out yet, we still are kind of over it by now, we know what it does and how it does. Or if at wwdc, they announced the 4s along side the other announcements, but itself alone doesn't seem that exciting, but really neither was the 3GS, loop a compass, and no one rarely uses it. I think and hope, Siri is more than just that.

1st smart phone

I will be getting a 4S. This will be my first smart phone and waiting for the 4S simply made sense over buying a 4 right now. My wife has an Android phone and while she was happy with it at first she is now frustrated with it and will be moving to an iphone at the first of the year.

I know a lot of the enthusiasts here are disappointed with the new iphone but for myself, and I'm sure many others, it is the perfect time to get one and I am quite happy with what I see.

Edited for stupidity.

I really think today's smartphones can largely replace P&S cameras. I don't use flash, so the only thing that's really missing is a tripod mount screw, but there are plenty of iPhone adapters for that (and cheap since Apple has not changed the exterior of the handset).

Smartphones certainly won't replace dedicated cameras, but if the only device you have on you with a camera is a smartphone, well, heck, it might as well be a good one.

If I get the iPhone 4S, it may encourage me to pull out my old film cameras a bit more often. After all, instead of carrying three electronic devices around (dumbphone, iPod touch, P&S digicam), I'd only have the iPhone (which as a phone I'd have on me anyhow) meaning my second device could be an analog camera.

I too am on the s cycle, I am waiting on the 5, that way I'll have a shot at the larger screen (should they choose to do it) as well as the LTE option (which I'm hoping for). Of course if your phone can't make it then time to get another, no sense in trying to put up with a phone that doesn't work for an entire year bc of how similar this thing is to last years model (external appearance at least)

I don't think you will have much of an issue with lines this time (multiple carriers/outlets and a tepid response from the press have assured that).

"with iCloud, you don't have to do anything, it just works"....
Um.. You have to pay $100 a year to use it (more for me as Im in Australia and they double charge us)..

You just don't screw over your apple fans who wait for 14 months, and sell them a half ass iPhone 4 to make them buy the same phone but better insides...

How dare you re-name voice recognition or 'Find my friends" to be your own revolutionised idea. Keynote really went ridiculous from when they related the iPhone 4 being more used than the canon 7D... I just can't continue with apple anymore, they are below the expected grade. Apple fan for 6 years, now calling it quits. Going with a FREE, HIGH TECH - RELIABLE source such as the new nexus coming.. or samsung galaxy II for half the price with a bigger screen and all the features.

Umm there is no charge for icloud. You are more than a little confused.

P.S. You should look into why your cost of living is so high. Apple has to build the additional cost of staffing their retail stores into Australian prices.

HUGE possibility that Sprint customers might to get it on the 14th...

Apple's website says, "coming soon."

What the heck does that mean?

What benefit do you see in a larger screen? How does that improve usability?

Congrats, you'll definitely enjoy it. I had a similar situation when I purchased my iPhone 3GS and have no regrets about that to this date, except for maybe the fact that I ended up switching to apple products and spending quite a bit more than i thought i would (definitely worth it :D) and now use an iPad, magic mouse, and Bluetooth keyboard. next step...MBP

wish this was iPhone 5 not iPhone 4S, as do many.. why wasn't this released back in July, guessing needed/wanted Siri, b/c only special feature this phone gets. iPhone 4 isn't slow and it's camera isn't bad, both get grades and not a great reason buy new phone. True Apple fan but this was a downgrade. [/url]

How exactly is this a downgrade? It may not have been as much of an upgrade as you wanted, but everything on this phone, from the antenna, to the battery life, to the processor, to the software is an upgrade.

It's larger....If the iPhone 5 mockups that we had a couple of days ago had been real i would enjoy web browsing a little more. I use it a ton but it would be an improvement. Also, some of the apps I use could benefit from a larger screen, although I have to admit I don't do much gaming. I'm in the medical field and sometimes I dont have don't have my iPad on me and could benefit from the larger iPhone screen. As for battery life, I plug mine in a bit so that wouldn't bother me.

What benefit do you see in a larger screen? How does that improve usability?

I'm guessing $649 for the 16GB model, which was the same price as the unlocked iPhone 4 was before today.

Ok, well at least with the Hawaii store if you bought an iphone4 when they first released it and have a two year contract, you will need to pay $650 for the 64gb version. No extention contracts to get lower price. That sucks if true.

So, run out and buy what u already have!

They will sell 30 million by the end of the year, but I think you are right. Supply will be good. The hardware has been in production a while.

This is the other problem thatnis unique to apple. They have to have more stock for launch month than the first years shipments of device like the S2.
