"analog camera" is a completely bogus concept

I bet Steve could have convinced everyone it was magical.

...the past tense is appropriate.

...meaning my second device could be an analog camera.

They're silver cameras - in no sense are they analog.

Look at silver halide chemistry to understand why. (Hint: "graininess" in silver photography comes from silver halides being in an "exposed" or "unexposed" state - i.e. "1" or "0".)

Mr. Gates has far more posts than you (so can the dramatic Windows forum diatribe), and isnt a general "troll" as you say. For the record, there are plenty of folks on MR who will swallow any horse pill Apple gives them and savor it like candy. Its pure rubbish.
I think the iPhone 4s looks nice and would be a pleasure to use...however, Apple drastically overshot their defined (and seemingly reasonable) release cycle, just to deliver a standard HW evolution. Sorry, but thats mediocre to me, and not the incredible innovation and thoughtfulness Ive come to expect from them.
Dont accuse folks of being trolls (which is against forum rules BTW) for not subscribing to a general trend of blind Apple bias. I personally respect opinions that are based in unbiased reasoning and honesty.

Thank you !

I love cool gadgets and toys as much as the next guy.
And although the iPhone is pretty awesome, I felt a little disappointed in this update.

It's rare to see people stick up for me because of my name.

It's larger, if the iPhone 5 mockups that we had a couple of days ago came to be real would enjoy web browsing a little more. I use it a ton but it would be an improvement. Also, some of the apps I use could benefit from a larger screen, although I have to admit I don't do much gaming. I'm in the medical field and sometimes I dont have don't have my iPad on me and could benefit from the larger iPhone screen. As for battery life, I plug mine in a bit so that wouldn't bother me.

I was just curious. I have tried a couple of the 4.5" Android phones, and I can not operate them one handed. Maybe I am missing something, but I think more research needs to go into these screen sizes. Bigger is not necessarily better. Part of that may be layout too. PC world had a pretty good article on how silly Android screens are getting now.

There may be a bigger screen size that works. I am sure Apple has/is looking into it. Just slapping one on ala Samsung or HTC would not be the way to go.

I'm guessing $649 for the 16GB model, which was the same price as the unlocked iPhone 4 was before today.
Yeah, and $749 for the 32GB model, which leads to $849 for the 64GB model (which is the one I really want).

Oh well, we'll see on Friday (I hope). At least a factory-unlocked iPhone will command a premium on the used market.

I would be sold if the screen were given a modest boost: slightly better blacks and a higher color gamut (under 50% is pathetic). This is still a big upgrade for everyone who a 3GS and older. Many iP4 users probably won't bother because our phones are fast enough and have a decent enough camera anyway.

Depends on the film. Silver halides are really only used in B&W film (and the now-discontinued Kodachrome). Today's color films (C-41 and E-6 processes) are really dye clouds.

In any case, you have devolved this into a semantic discussion. Digital photography refers to the use of silicon circuitry for recording the image, at least in layman's terms.

If you want analog imagery, what are you going to do? Paint a picture with oil paints? Those are pigments suspended in an oil medium, reflecting certain wavelengths. And what is color, after all? It's certain wavelengths of light reflecting off of molecules. In a way, there's no digital imagery.

Hint: maybe you should learn something about photography and optics before you snark off. You aren't that clever, especially when you devolve the conversation into semantics.

For further study, I suggest you read Leslie Stroebel's Photographic Materials and Processes (the out-of-print hardcover version of the classic photography textbook used at Rochester Institute of Technology).

So far, Rogers has ignored the launch: there is no mention of the phone on their website and I expect zero help from them and minimum assistance in upgrading. The iPhone 4 launch was a joke here and Rogers really screwed it up: I expect more of the same!

I drove up from Boston for the Factory Unlocked on July 30th..(They were not selling Factory UNnlocked here at that time)....but all i remember was the crazy lines at Carrefour Laval, and how they split people up in the line lol i wasnt too bad, they gave out coffee and donuts..

@greytmom

Nope. We actually usually get to purchase them from AT&T usually 4 or 5 months after everyone once they control inventory levels. However we are allowed to get them through Apple.

It's to better serve our customers apparently. I suppose it makes sense as I could just see a bunch of employees reserving phones for friends or whatever if they just let us have our way.

I could also switch to Verizon/Sprint if I wanted.....

AT&T is penalizing family plan members who want to upgrade now
Second and subsequent numbers on a family plan will have to pay $300 more to upgrade now with the primary number or Wait 4 months to get the lower price even though all 3 iiPhone 4 bought and activated at same time

Yeah but the decrease would be so small and unnoticeable that it wouldn't matter

Maybe, that is not the only reason. I am just skeptical of upgrading the screen for the sake of having a bigger screen. It is like adding megapixels or gigahertz, everything needs to be balanced,

Screen size will effect dpi, battery life, and one-handed use. Simply stretching the screen to the edges of the bezel like those mockups ads some other interface issues. How do you hold the phone without touching the screen? So, if you instead make the whole case bigger, you have now changed how well the device fits in your pocket. Take one of those 4.5+ phones and put it in your pocket. Does it fit? Sure. Would you want it there everyday? Not me.

Talk about snarky.

I think this might be the end of the whole upgrade early to get a new iPhone thing. Honestly all the carriers seem like they could care less these days......They don't even have the phone on any of their websites.....Not only that but I'm willing to bet that a lot of customers on carriers other than AT&T are making the same threat to cancel if they don't get an upgrade. Maybe they're all hoping everyone moving carriers will cancel each other out?

I honestly have no idea why people are considering switching to android. iPhone 4 is still the best smart phone out there hands down. Apple clearly wasn't ready to launch ip5 or they would have at this event. I am glad they are waiting because I want their next phone to be a total game changer.

Pre-ordering day one.

Off topic, I'm sorta pissed Siri doesn't work with the iPad 2. This thing is a beast, but it can't chew on Siri (nevermind the fact that the original app works on freaking iPhone 3GS...)?

Obviously, they want to make it a major selling point of the iPhone 4S, but why not let iPad 2 users have it as well, since it's not likely someone is going to pass on buying an iPhone to get an iPad if they need a freaking phone. Just don't let it run on phones older than the 4S, and don't let it run at all on iPod Touch. Problem solved.

I think it is amusing that so many people don't think the 4s is a major upgrade solely because it is not in a new case. Exactly what features are they missing? 4G? Well, if you are on AT&T, the 4s should be at least as fast as Wimax and LTE as they are currently implemented. If you are on Verizon and Sprint, well, I'm sorry for you as you are apparently stuck with 3g. A bigger screen? I guess it would be nice, but not if it makes the device too big to fit comfortably in my pocket. If wonder, do you think if they had put the same hardware in a new case and called it the 5, that all of the same morons be happy? I bet a bunch of them would. I bet the rest of them would never be happy - or admit it anyway. I also bet these are the same people who were whining that the 3Gs wasn't a real upgrade over the 3G. I had both devices and the 3GS was a successful and satisfying upgrade. I have the 4 now and I very much like this form factor. Apparently somebody agrees with me as they have sold a bunch of them and I bet they will sell a bunch more. I also like the touch iPod, but I suspect they can't fit enough battery into the case to make it a viable phone - yet. Maybe next year. I thought it was pretty comical how the rumor mill thought every new iPod Touch case they saw was clear evidence of the iPhone 5. And everyone blames Apple for not building it - instead of admitting they were pretty stupid for swallowing the rumors.

As far as the timing, I also find it pretty amusing that so many of those same people think they so clearly understand how to run a business as complex as Apple. Somebody may have pointed this out and I haven't seen it, but I suspect it may be possible that Apple was concerned that if they had pushed out the 4s so soon after the iPad2, they would not have had enough A5 chips (or some other parts) to satisfy the market for both devices. I don't remember how far out they still were in June, but I know they weren't yet current on stock as I ordered one as a birthday present in mid- June and was not sure it would arrive in three weeks (it did). I don' think they got current until later in the summer and they probably would have allowed for some safety factor if that was indeed a concern. There were also a number of rumors in the market about various shortages resulting from the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, which could have affected the release date. They may also have been waiting to perfect the software as they clearly needed iOS5 and Siri to finish off the product. It is astounding to me how many people hammer the release of software with even the slightest bugs and also turn around and wonder why it wasn't released years earlier. For half the price. Go figure.

Umm there is no charge for icloud. You are more than a little confused.

P.S. You should look into why your cost of living is so high. Apple has to build the additional cost of staffing their retail stores into Australian prices.

The annual charge for GB storage on iCloud 64 GB is $99 US?? And Im more so complaining about their online charging..which has nothing to do with retail. Our Australian dollar is matched the US by a few cents.. it shouldn't be $2.19 for a single song compared to 99 cents for America...This can be easily corrected. Apple are all about the money.. Im a fan-boy and don't mind it.. but to obsolete my iPhone 4 with higher capable games/graphical app's to having me buy the same phone for same price just pisses me off. Im going for a 4G nexus prime.

No they are NOT. When each person bought the I4, they went with a 2 year contract to get the lower price. A price that ATT had to pay for the phone.

Why does everyone think that people with a year or even a year and half ito a 2 year contract should get ATT to help pay for the phone?

C-41 and E-6 are silver-based.
There is no silver in the fixed image. It's just a dye cloud.

Go to a museum and look at photographic images. If it says "silver halide print" it is because there is silver halide in the medium.

The dye cloud density determines the color/saturation/etc. in C-41 and E-6 images, not the binary presence of silver halide crystals.

You lose, again.

very glad that apple is not releasing a newly designed iphone. if apple did decide to release the iphone 5 today, id be excited, tho i dont think i would trade in my iphone 4 for it yet. iphone 4 is an awesome phone and ive only been using it for a little over a year.

As someone consider my first smartphone, I am glad that I will be able to access a well-developed, highly competitive and fairly priced accessory market.

A new case design would simply result in additional cost for me.
