How would this work? Right now, Apple sells two phones,... the premiere iPhone 4 and the iPhone 3GS. If they just called them "iPhones", you'd have to say "I want to buy the $199 iPhone" or "should I get the $49 iPhone?"... that's pretty tedious, IMO. People say iPhone all the time. And then they're asked... "oh, yeah,.... which one?" You see. We need something to differentiate them all.

It didn't seem to be a problem with the Macbooks which had different processor speed, RAM options, and HDD options and sold from 2006 to 2011.

I don't see a number system on the iPod Touch either.

Like everyone else, I'd be seriously disappointed with just a 4S. The Android phones out now are way too impressive to simply improve the speed and camera. 16 months for that?!

I would think supporting more than one radio would decrease battery life even if the radio not in use was powered down. It would increase cost and complexity. What would be the advantage when most phones were carrier locked?

The advantage would be able to use 3G/4G across all those carriers. Case in point - T-Mobile USA operates on a different frequency than AT&T does, so while you can unlock your iphone to use on T-Mobile, you can't use T-mobile's 3G data plans. If the radio were able to switch frequencies based on carrier, this would enable you to use data plans from any provider.

----------

If i could buy an iphone and take it to any carrier of my choosing and be able to use their data plans, have an A5 processor, RAM boost, 8MP camera that produces images as beautiful as those from an iPhone 4 (but at higher res), 64 gig capacity and a 4" screen i'd sell my own daughter to sex traders....

honestly....there is no way Apple, the largest tech company in the world, is going to make its customers/fans wait 15 months for hardware upgrades. Those can be done in a few months. It is going to be a redesign.

i agree....they can't afford to pass 15 months without a re-design

Fedup with the 4S/5 whiners!

I'm fed up with these whiners who are always complaining about new models not having X feature!

When the iPad 2 came out you were all whining: "well its an iPad 1.5 because it doesn't have a retina screen". It did have a new processor, new styled exterior, cameras, smart covers. AND it sold MILLIONS! (I bought one myself and love it!)

Now you are whining about the next iPhone not being a true iPhone 5 if it doesn't have a new exterior or a bigger screen but will have a better camera, processor etc.

Apple can call their new models anything they like.

As Much as I hate to admit I think this is likely to be true. Doesn't look like there is going to be any true iPhone 5 and Im going to be seriously disappointed when it is just an iPhone 4 look-a-like with slightly better specs and thus will be sticking with my 3GS on 30 day contract!

I really don't want an iPhone 4 and the only way I would consider is with a bigger screen but even then I wouldn't be desperate!

I used to be desperate for a new phone at end of my 12 month contract but the iPhone is so good that I don't even mind keeping it even though I've had it since launch over 2 Years ago!

would be disappointed. 18 months for minor revision? no no no

anyone recall the build-up to the ipad2 launch? was there a lot of leaked parts, etc. or no? just curious (and holding out hope for redesigned/metal backed 5)

16 months and all we get is a lousy "S"!?
16 months and you get iPhone 5, my dear.

iPhone 5 features:
- same design as iPhone 4 but with new antenna (whoa!)
- better camera
- faster

What more do you need?

Repeat after me:
Original iPhone = iPhone 1
iPhone 3G = iPhone 2
iPhone 3GS = iPhone 3
iPhone 4 = iPhone 4
iPhone 4S, 5, HD, 4+, 2011, etc. = iPhone 5

Are we on the same page now?

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Hi!

I follow these discussions on MacRumors a long time now, especially the ones about the new iPhone(s), but this is one of my first posts here.

Until now we got some broken pieces of an iPhone4-like device with apparently an A5 inside, some infos about an 8M camera and a leaked design document for a teardrop-like iPhone, iPod touch, whatever ...

First of all I don't believe in those design documents at least not for an iPhone, but maybe for an iPod touch.

Then I don't get why Apple should release and upgraded iPhone4 with an A5 and an 8M camera AND a completely redesigned iPhone, what could be the selling point hardware-wise for the redesigned one? If they would release two, then they would target the same market and would make one of them obsolete, not a strategy Apple would follow.

So in my opinion there is just the minor hardware upgrade, same design, but the big selling point will be the iOS5, most of the people don't even care what's inside their phones ...

There is no huge selling point in hardware this year for an iPhone like a new screen, but a big step in software (iCloud). We have to think that not all people are as tech-savy as we are in this forum, they care about usability and the software, they never heard about dual core, 4g or nfc. An iPhone has to be designed for the masses!

Please excuse my not so fluent english and feel free to share your thoughts!

As a long time Mac user that has attended _every_ MacWorld and WWDC event, my experience reveals that:

No matter what it's called,
No matter what it looks like,
No matter what it has or doesn't have,
No matter what it costs,
No matter how long it takes to bring it to market,

The Apple Fans will declare it the best, and lineup to buy it.

That's nothing but fact.

Assuming it is the 4S (forget about the nomenclature) I would guess that the Iphone 5 with all the goodies that people were hoping for (including larger super-resolution display, new case design, LTE etc) would come out in June or so. This idea does make a bit of sense what with previous rumours talking about design issues with the 5. To have that be announced in October next year would be just too long a time span.

I think I can see apple's first really bad move in the mobile sector. 4S or 5 or 4+ whatever you call it without any major design changes your pretty much giving the market a year or so old phone with internal changes, surely the increasing market of large screen phones shows Apple people want more screen than before. At least with the 3GS they offered video recording as one of the selling points but what else can they add, 1080p recording big whoop all that does is increase the space taken up on my 16gb phone. the world wide signalling won't effect most countries mainly europe which is all GSM pretty much. Apples already lost the top spot in many countries here in the UK SG11 is No1 but if i see an ip4+/s then I'm sorry Apple I'm jumping ship although I love the OS, a larger screen is a deal breaker. Another thing I personally think the iP4 design isn't ergonomically comfortable I get red marks in my hand when holding it tightly., it also just feels slippery.

I certainly won't, and i have been in the queue in my local Apple store since ip3GS, ipad1 and ipad2 but a 4S no way. I hate the 4 and i can't wait to get rid of it.

After waiting over a year and few months to have apple shove the market with iPhone 4 with just an updated OS is unimaginable. All numbers point to 5: iOS 5, A5 Chip and the fifth iPhone in the market. I believe iPhone 3gs was to offset their numbering system as they introduced their 3g as a 2nd generation, then 3gs to fit in queue.. So there you have it.

Do you people honestly not understand that they could release a phone with the same design as the iPhone 4, but with upgraded internals, and call it the iPhone 5? In fact I'm almost certain that's what they'll do on Oct. 4th. Remember that the 4S name was pretty much invented out of thin air.

Why should Apple discard the perfectly good iPhone 4 design? Upgraded internals will make the iPhone 5 a better phone, regardless of what it looks like on the outside.

I am happy with my 4 but to call it a perfectly good design is wrong. I used to use a variety of cases but since I love the design it seemed a shame as I am very careful with my phones. So I go naked and there is an antenna issue in marginal signal areas which I correct for (yes, they talk about a redesign of the antenna) but that glass back? That is form over function/practicality.

Employees or analysts.

Let's see, according to analysts there will be no iphone 5 this year. According to reported employees from Apple, two new iphones will be released next month. I think I'll go with what the rumored employees are reporting. There is no way Apple is going to release just an updated iphone 4, especially if they wish to stay competitive with the Android market. And I believe it's already been explained right here on this site why the latter is true. Even Gore, who is on the BOARD OF DIRECTORS at Apple has been quoted as stating "iphones" are coming next month. If you really think only an updated iphone 4 is coming, then you're just bitter you're not due for an upgrade yet! Haha!

You make two mistakes.

1. The selling point of the '4S' is the price, simple as that. It's got everything that makes an iPhone an iPhone, but it's cheaper.

2. You're right, people don't care about what's inside the phone. But at first, they don't care about the software as well. They learn to appreciate it after they've used it. iOS 5 and iCloud are a huge step forward, but it's *not enough*. People don't really care, they like it, but they don't really care. Two different things. What people DO like are the looks. It has to look awesome, it has to have an impressive screen, the camera must be perfect, etc.

iPhone comparison chart

Go here to see how features have changed between models:

http://ipod.about.com/od/decidingwhichipodtobuy/a/iphone_chart.htm

This chart does not include when the exterior changed but the 3G and 3GS had the same exterior.

Now if the next iPhone (5!) model kept the iPhone 4 exterior but upgraded the processor, cameras (maybe with 1080p recording) and the new iOS 5 would that be consistent with the past?

Omg! So many rumors!

Wow. I am so F###ING tired of these iPhone 5 rumors! There going back and forth. First is there wont be an iPhone 4S then the next day the site will say there will be iPhone 4s. This has happened so many times! Get some real info or don't post anything at all. It's just a phone! Just wait for a week or so for the iPhone release!
