so got iOS 8.1 with 4S

its more or less the same speed as 8.0.2... but does fix some of the bugs 8.0 had

the only thing is spotlight search isn't coming up.... and when i turned off and then turned on the phone it took forever.

I just updated and, for some reason, my phone got *really* slow, dropping frames front and center, whereas on 8.0.* it was only slightly slower than on 7.0.2

Sigh. I really hope this is due to indexing or so like some in this thread suggested.

Still have some issues with Messages in landscape mode (black screen, keyboard not responding or slow,...).

Sometimes, when I skip to landscape mode in Messages it automatically start to record an audio message...

Seriously?

now Apple has decided not to support SMS relay on 4S..

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6337..

i dont think 5G Touch has SMS relays or the ability to make calls either since Apple mentiones only iPhone users can do it... the link says 4S can still make calls though (and the 5G iPod Touch can receive calls lol).

Continuity confuses me sometimes

i think it could be SMS Forwarding... but the Apple Support link says that 4S can only do calls to other devices not SMS..

I find my 4S much better with 8.1

I was running the betas, and decided to restore my phone from DFU mode using iTunes. It's quick, and runs noticeably cooler for me not that it was overheating or anything. Apple must have done some optimisation here.

Did anyone who had problem with wifi on 8.0.2, resolve his problems with update to 8.1 ?
I am a 4s user, stuck on 8.0.2 with a wifi problem, but afraid to update, as it could further cripple my phone.

How, don't you need to use a switch to enable it?

Yes, there is a switch in iOS 8.1 in Settings > Messages in order to activate SMS relay with the devices of your choice.

After I activated it for my MacBook Pro, that a message with a code appeared in Messages for Mac, and I entered this code in iOS in order to pair the Mac and the iPhone for SMS relay.

iOS 8.1

After performing an update/ restore on my 4S via iTunes, I now have regained 1.1Gb from the 'other' data in usage for whatever reason and phone seems a bit less laggy. Safari seems more responsive and wi-fi throughput seems to be as quick as 7.12.
Happy now :apple:

I'm finding it pretty good too (I think...)

I may just have got used to the slowness of iOS 8.0.x

Is this the general consensus?

How is your battery with 8.1? I'm still waiting on the "all clear" before I move off 7.1.2.

Hacked off!!!!!

I've been looking around my 4S for several hours and nothing jumps out at me. I've just applied the 8.1 to my iPad2 and again nothing in any menus either.

My Wife's iPad mini has a new Menu that's not on either of my devices: Settings/General/ Handoff & suggested apps.

Is Apple involved in a bit or Truth expansion, and the 4S won't support anything new and useful??

From the link you provided: "SMS works with any iOS device with iOS 8.1, and any Mac that supports Yosemite."

Well, I couldn't resist and updated my iPhone 4s from 7.1.2 directly to 8.1
I have only used it for a couple hours, but everything seems to be working perfectly!

It was a clean install:

1. Back up to iCloud/iTunes prior to update.
2. Click Restore option in iTunes (1.6Gb download).
3. After iPhone restarts, choose to restore from iCloud/iTunes.
4. After restore is 100% complete, erase all settings.
5. Reconfigure all settings by hand.
6. Reboot, just for the sake of it.

Phone calls and SMS messages are being correctly forwarded to Mac.
And iCloud Drive is working as expected, no issues.
I have no complaints whatsoever... yet!
:D

The lag is nowhere near as bad as I expected.
It feels like the speed of iOS 7.0

Thanks for sharing. What do you mean by this last bit though?

Do you mean that it feels as slow as 7.0 did?

Yes.
I meant it basically feels the same speed as iOS 7.0 was.

Be aware that, although iOS 7.0 on the iPhone 4s wasn't as fast as iOS 6, for me it was still very good and pleasurable to use (in contrast to iOS 7.0 in the iPhone 4, which made the device unusable).

If you were annoyed by the speed of iOS 7.0, maybe you shouldn't upgrade.
As of yet, I am really preferring iOS 8.1 over iOS 7.0 and iOS 7.1.2

UPDATE:
In retrospect, back then I also updated to iOS 7.0 using the same procedure described above.
As such, I didn't experience many of the bugs or freezes people used to describe.
Maybe that's why I didn't have any concerns with iOS 7.0.

How is your battery life?

Just after the update, the iPhone burns through the battery.
But this is normal behaviour after every clean update.
Maybe it's indexing or something like that.

This usually goes back to normal after a few hours.
So let me get back to you on this, ok!
;)

I had been running 8.0.2 on my 4S with no issues. I did notice some lagging / choppy animations. Last night I updated to 8.1 via iTunes. So far, all seems good. Overall a bit smoother. No noticeable change in battery use. I generally go about a full day on a charge. This should hold me until my 6 Plus (ordered 9.19) is created and NOT sold in India, China or any other part of the world.

Thank you for the reply. I'm on the fence about updating... I didn't have so many crashes/freezes with 7, as much as just really slow animation delays / unresponsive to taps/swipes.

If Apple allowed reverting back, this would not be an issue. But since it's like carving into a stone...

From the link you provided: "SMS works with any iOS device with iOS 8.1, and any Mac that supports Yosemite."

it says that which I understand but what i dont get is the quote below

Yet it also says "iPhone 4s (sharing iPhone calls only)" this must be in reference to Handoff with apps.

this... I dont get Apple here.. Apple is saying that it can support SMS Handoff and then it can't as refrenced above...

but then ive looked at Settings> Messages to see if Text Messaging Forward ( for SMS forwarding) was there, but it isn't there on my 4S. It is there on my mom's 5 however
