Looks like something Apple did under iOS 8.0.2 but running 8.1 and noticeably better app performance especially on 3D games and applications. Before I would get terrible lag or unresponsive behavior unless I reboot but now at least stuff works without rebooting.

but then ive looked at Settings> Messages to see if Text Messaging Forward ( for SMS forwarding) was there, but it isn't there on my 4S. It is there on my mom's 5 however

The Messaging Forward option only appears if you are logged into iMessage with the same Apple ID, both in the iPhone and in the Mac. Be aware that, by default, iMessage in iPhone is only "logged in" with your phone number. So you might think that it's logged with the Apple ID while it's not. There is an option there to enable log in with your Apple ID.

Personally, I have found iOS 8.1 slower than 8.0.2 was (and that was slow too)

Not trolling, just my honest opinion. Looking forward to seeing some "optimization" notes in the next update.

Clean install from 7.1.2 to 8.1:

1. Back up to iCloud/iTunes prior to update.
2. Click Restore option in iTunes (1.6Gb download).
3. After iPhone restarts, choose to restore from iCloud/iTunes.
4. After restore is 100% complete, erase all settings.
5. Reconfigure all settings by hand.
6. Reboot, just for the sake of it.

Ok, here's the follow up:
I've been using my iPhone 4s for almost 12 hours now.

For the last 6 hours, I left it on battery-only and it's now at 70%.
It's about 5% per hour, which seems normal to me for my usage:

  • Some 5-minute calls.
  • Checking and replying work e-mails.
  • Messaging via Whatsapp and SMS Forwarding on the Mac.
  • A few minutes of Safari browsing (this site mostly).
  • App Store browsing.

These are some of my battery-related configurations, for comparison:

  • Wi-Fi and 3G ON (about 3 hours on each).
  • Bluetooth OFF (battery +).
  • Auto Brightness (default config).
  • Wallpaper Perspective Zoom OFF (battery +).
  • Transparency ON and reduce motion OFF (default config).
  • Background refresh OFF (battery ++).
  • Location services ON for everything (default config).
  • Two e-mail accounts with FETCH every 15 minutes (battery --).

So far, I am loving 8.1.
Here are my current very-small annoyances/bugs:

  • Whatsapp does not automatically revert back from numeric keyboard to alphanumeric keyboard when you send a message (this does not happen in iMessage, so I think it might be a bug with Whatsapp). I have to manually click on the ABC key when starting the next message.
  • Starting/ending a call sometimes has some lag. This does not happen every time.
  • Control panel is really, really ugly.

And here are my very-small pleasures, that I am really loving very much:

  • The revamped notification menu is simply delicious.
  • Swiping left an e-mail message to Trash and right to Archive. So good!
  • SMS forwarding. Whatsapp has to implement this as well!
  • Quick reply messages.

This is it for now.
:D

Well, I couldn't resist and updated my iPhone 4s from 7.1.2 directly to 8.1
I have only used it for a couple hours, but everything seems to be working perfectly!

The lag is nowhere near as bad as I expected.
It feels like the speed of iOS 7.0

Yesterday night i looked at the below video which compares the 4S running iOS7.1.2 and another 4S running 8.1
I'm staying on 7.1.2 after looking at that video.

http://youtu.be/rReBg6llszE

on Twitter when i search for '4S iOS 8.1' or ''4S iOS8.1' most of them are pretty happy with the performance.

But as said in the video I posted earlier. I don't think I will update any soon after looking at that when you look at the response/speed with e.g:
- open folders
- safari > opening websites
- notification center response
- control panel response
- App Store app
- Weather app
- vertical to horizontal switch (for e.g. video viewing)

Apple can't work miracles. Performance is adequate and it's unlikely to get much better. If you think iPhone 4s is bad, try to find a friend who is using iOS 8.1 on an iPad 2 and experience the joy of using it.

Botton line: you really need to upgrade to a new device if you want to use cutting-edge software and services.

Can anyone share more feedback of iOS 8.1 regarding:

- Speed/Performance/Lag/Stutter (is it better? does it feel anywhere near 7.1.2?);

- Battery Life (how long does it last and how were you using it?)

Thanks :)

In my opinion, the performance is comparable to iOS 7.0.
It is slower than 7.1.2, but completely acceptable and pleasurable to use.
The worst offender is the boot time. But since you don't reboot your phone constantly, that's ok.

About battery, I get about 5% consumption per hour, which seems normal.
Read my own long post, 4-5 posts above this, with usage descriptions and configuration.

Pacorob posted a great comparison video.
And I can say that when seeing both side by side it looks awful, but it doesn't feel nowhere as bad when using it

If you were annoyed by iOS 7.0 speeds, don't update.
If you don't need the new features, don't update.
Particularly, I'm really enjoying 8.1.

I was a doubter on iphone 4s with IOS 8.1 at first (was at ios 7.2), after reading encouraging news from camilaacolide, I did an update using itune with macbook pro, it took sometime to update, miracle did happen, it cured my battery drain problem. Though I have a new battery in my hand ready to replace, watching the battery situation if improves will not replace it. As far as performance wise same as IOS 7. The important point is to get the latest technique from latest IOS, it helps a lot, make me happier with this upgrade. After all you got to take a chance, it will last my another 2 years I will be happy, just keep my fingers cross.

I've been an Apple fanboy since my first 32gb iPod, back in 2006. I've bought after that two iPod 160gb, one in 2007 and another one in 2008. After that, I've bought an iPhone 3GS back in 2010 and at the time a brand new iPhone 4s in 2011's Christmas. In the same Christmas, I've bought an iPad 2, then in 2012 I've bought an iPhone 4 for my fiancée, and an iPad 4th Gen in 2013's Christmas. My point is: I'm an Apple fanboy, like most of us here.

But I can't and I won't keep endorsing what Apple is doing after this fiasco. My girlfriend own an iPhone 4 like I've said above, and after her update to iOS 7, it was indeed slower than before, but very slightly. She still can use several apps at once and there is not a single ounce of freezing, apps shuting down by themselves, laggy and not responsive keyboard, battery problems or for Christ's sake, she can normally make phone calls.

Not the same luck with my iPhone 4S, I've waited until iOS 8.1 because I've heard about the problems with iOS 8 and iOS 8.0.2, but I never could imagine that after updating, my completely flawless cellphone with less than THREE years of use and that I've bought at the release date here in Brazil back in 2011, it's now a glorified brick.

Here is a run down of problems that I've been facing since the update, which before anyone asks me, I did with a CLEAN INSTALL and after doing procedures that would "speed up" the 4s:

  1. I can't open the Cellphone app. Seriously, it literally freezes. I can't make or accept phone calls, and that's my office's cellphone.
  2. I can't type properly, the keyboard is laggy and not responsive.
  3. My apps crash constantly, and God forbid I open two to three apps at the same time.
  4. Games? Well, forget it, Infinity Blade 3 and games with heavy graphics aren't worthy of my 4S anymore, even though it worked flawlessly before.
  5. Battery life is lasting six to eight hours a cycle, and the cellphone is heating up a lot.
  6. What is Wi-Fi? My Wi-Fi keeps getting disconnected, and when I try to find it, it says it isn't there, when the router is on and with other devices like the PS4 working normally.
  7. It's slow. SO slow. I remember that my first smartphone was a Sony Xperia Mini, and that thing was slow, but it isn't remotely as much slow as this travesty that it's the iOS 8.1 on my iPhone 4s. By the way, my iPod 160gb classic it's still my FAVORITE Apple device and it's working FLAWLESSLY after SIX years of use. My iPhone 4s isn't even 3 years old yet.

Here in Brazil we do have a strong and avant garde Consumer Law, it's beyond obvious that Apple is indeed explicitly applying a planned obsolescence policy and they were already comndened for this very practice around here before. We are treated here like some kind of "second rate" consumers, unlike the United States and other countries that have a program to exchange your old iPhone for a new one under a contract, there's simply not this option here, so if I want to get a new iPhone, I have to buy a new one, and here it's almost three times more expensive than in the United States.

By the way: I'm aware that Apple aren't selling iPhone 4s models in the US anymore. Not the same case around here: the iPhone 4s 8gb model is sold here at the Brazillian Apple Store for around $445 dollars, which is insane, when you think at what is happening with the iPhone 4s all across the globe, let alone the ammount of space that iOS 8 will eat up, Apple here in Brazil is inducing people to buy glorified bricks for abusive prices.

I'm afraid that my time as an Apple fanboy is coming to a bitter end, but I'm going not without a bang, I'll see what I can do about this. And before someone starts white knighting Apple, remember that we need Apple to do better than this, and we all know that they can do better than this. Innovation can't and shouldn't come at this price, they need to find ways to keep their products working, and if there's any proof that they are capable of that, there is no need to look any further than any old iPod Classic device out there in good conditions, they don't get suddenly and artificially made "worst devices" in order to Apple to profit.

Apple need to start treating their loyal costumers right, this is the first time since I've bought an iPhone that the idea of going Android ever crossed my mind, sadly now it's a distinct possibility.

Best do a restore from backup as although I'm having some issues, they are improved in 8.1 and nothing like as bad as you are experiencing.

Already did that. Reinstalled for the second time now. I know what I'm doing here, and I remember how my cellphone was yesterday. What I can get out of this is that 4s isn't fit for iOS 8, 8.1 or not, and that Apple should treat their custumers a lot better than this. I don't want a shiny and free update that will make a completely fit and fast cellphone turn into a dragging and sluggish hot mess that barely ressembles what the cellphone was yesterday.

Zauri, It is a letdown to your immerse loyalty to Apple. Yes I did have the same feeling I am owning 2 macbook pro one 2009 and the other 2010 models, 1 pad 3 (this is still on ios 6.x) I was not in a position to upgrade to ios 8 have skipped the ios 7. It is sick to the stomach to know my mac book pros cannot handle some features of ios 8 despite having osx yosemite on macs. The lesson here is not to trust Apple to do every good for you. :)

I wouldn't put too much stock in that video. There is obviously a problem with the ios8 install. Unless they were both erased and restored to factory it is not a good comparison. It is obvious they were not.

I did a comparison of my 2 iPod touches and my results were the opposite, the iOS 8 one started up faster. And did not have any of those lag problems in the lock screen or the prefs.

Zauri, guess what!
I am living with a Brazillian friend! Check it out:

"Fala Zauri! Já que seu telefone está uma porcaria mesmo, tenta fazer do jeito que a Camila descreveu, sem pular nenhum passo. Tanto o telefone dela quanto o meu (que também comprei no Brasil, na VIVO) está bacana mesmo. Claro que não está rápido como no antigo iOS 6, mas está muito bom de usar:

Good luck Zauri!
:D

I have a 4s but have not updated to iOS8 after going through the 3g/iOS4 fiasco. After that it's hard not to be cynical about these updates with older devices. There are many questions that could be asked about why Apple promotes updates that might negatively affect hardware but I said this with the 3g update, why should they really care? I mean there are X number of people who have a 4s and X number of them care enough to note that their phone has been affected and want to keep that phone that worked fine yesterday. So how many people does this come out to? And does that number really even register a blip on the Apple screen? I'd say probably not not.
But unfortunately it does have an accumulative effect of negative feelings of Apple by those who feel neglected. And does that matter? I don't know. They lose some, they gain some. As long as the bottom line is in tact, why should they really worry?

I bought this phone less than a year ago, it should work as intended. I had to do a restore and was forced onto iOS 8. There isnt much more going on under the hood than there was in iOS7. So this comment is ridiculous.

If you bought a ferrari last year and then were forced to put a ford fiesta engine in it because ferrari wanted to force you into upgrading, would you be sitting there saying the same crap ?

Crashes, freeze ups, slow ass performance and more. I had to write this post twice because safari crashed whilst writing it.

Prove what magical new things are happening to make iOS 8 consume so much more resources and then you might have a point... However, even if you do, you won' t, as i should be allowed to go back to iOS 7, instead of being locked in the iOS 8 jailhouse against my wishes.

My awesome phone is now basically a crap heap, which probably wont survive much longer, because ill end up smashing it against a wall one of these days

You wasn't forced to upgrade to iOS 8. You chose to do it.

FWIW I argued previously (before the betas were done) that Apple shouldn't be releasing iOS 8 to iPad 2 and iPhone 4s users. I think it was a mistake that they chose to do it. I also think it would be reasonable if Apple allowed iPhone 4s and iPad 2 users to downgrade. The experience is that bad particularly on the iPad 2 which is now basically unusable.

Did you even read my post? I said that i was forced onto iOS 8 because i had to do a restore (my phone was stuck in a bootloop)

How in gods name is that a choice? I had to restore, but did not want to restore to iOS 8, i was forced.

So my argument is valid and stands

But then we can say that you had caused the boot loop, it wasn't Apple forcing you.
