g maps doesn't use true realtime 3D graphics. The Tom Tom is basically 2D technology made to look 3D through perspective. The level of graphic detail is much different. Navigation renders the entire map in 3D with 3D buildings. This takes more power. Not to mention g maps uses far more battery too

Memory leaks are not limited to the OS level either. Plus Apple has been notorious to not have fully optimized new versions for older devices until a .1 release. There's gonna be bugs plaguing the system on new OS versions. This is the same for other systems too (vista anyone??)

There was a person who worked on Microsoft Vista on either MacRumors or during the Reddit AMA that mentioned the reason Vista was "bad" at the time was due to people still using computers utilizing computers with Pentium 4 and less than 1 GB of RAM which Vista was not made for. Most computers now use something comparable to Core Duo 2 with at least 2 GB of RAM so if Vista was released today it wouldn't have such the back lash as it does today. Simply Vista was too far ahead of its time. (though this statement can be debatable even when Vista was announced Pentium 4 was way far too old to even be properly supported it was released in 2000 when Vista was released in 2007)

How is the iphone 4s on ios 8 compared to the iphone 4 on ios 7.1.2? I know ios 8 is still in beta.

I haven't used it but my friend at Apple said that it's probably going to be "horrible". Coming from this person I would take the advice and stay away!

I would like to update to iOS8 (e.g. other swype keyboards) however most of the folks which have an iPhone 4S here and on e.g. YouTube wouldn't advise to do it because it's pretty slow in response. I think I will wait to see more folks using the final download tomorrow.

These two iOS8 GM iPhone 4S videos (1 | 2) don't look good at all in response e.g. at:
- 'Music' app - scroll through album covers,
- keyboard response in e.g Safari browser
- Notification Center speed
- 'Settings' app speed/scrolling

Running the GM here myself - it's terrible. IMO it's worse than iOS 7 on the 4. Apps are not retained in memory hardly at all - switching back to Skype from Safari usually involves both apps restarting; the battery life is less than six hours; everything lags. I had done a complete wipe and reinstall of iOS 8 - and did not restore from backup. TBH I'd rather stay on 7, but YMMV!

That's why I reverted from 8GM to 7 in less than 5 hours. I will be at the window and see what rage will cause this release in the next couple of weeks.

The storm is going to contain human excrement, that's for sure.

Can anyone running iOS 8 GM on 4s confirm if disabling some "unnecessary" stuff improves performance like:

1. Spotlight search (turn off for everything)
2. Siri
3. Bluetooth
4. Background App Refresh
5. Location Services
6. Face-time (just to test)
7. Automatic Downloads (settings->iTunes & App Store)
8. Turn off photo stream
9. Last but not least reduce transparency (General-> Accessibility-> Increase Contrast-> Turn On Reduce Transparency)

I don't really need above listed features. They are even disabled in my current iOS 7.1.2. So if anyone can check if disabling those improve performance on iOS 8? even little bit?

thanks

I don't think disabling bluetooth will impact performance at all, rather it may increase battery life by a margin. That's like saying turning off wifi will increase performance or turning off 3G.

I could be wrong. But I count these as processes. So like I Said, I don't need these certain features so turning off them could save battery and some resources?

Going to keep the 4S on iOS 7. The iPhone 3G with iOS 4 TAUGHT ME A VERY BAD LESSON A LONG LONG TIME AGO. Don't ever update your aging phone with the latest update.

I do know that turning off bluetooth may save some battery life, probably 1~2% at most 5%. From my useage, bluetooth really uses battery if it is constantly being used, bluetooth headset, rather then in standby especially since the 4s has version 4.0 LE (which stands for low energy). Processing would be neglectable.

One week with iOS 8 and everything is perfect, my battery seems to last a little longer and after all the indexing stuff that happens on the background after a complete restore and no iCloud backup, everything feels very fluid. There are some little bugs like notification banners not going away but nothing serious.

Trust me, update! :)

Or wait until 8.0.1

-The scroll through Coverflow is on issue on iOS 7. I've noticed scrolling with 200+ albums do lag, but it stops after it caches the images (would depend on the image files I'm guessing too, most of my album art is around 1500x1500 or higher so it wouldn't look blurry on retina macs and TV) but this issue doesn't occur when there are only ~25 album on coverflow
-Gets better after indexing (waited 24 hours) though it could be that I have a higher tolerance for lag? Need to try on my dad's iPhone 5 and compare`
-Can't point my finger on this one, scrolling on the lockscreen is a lot better but on the homescreen it seems to be lagging probably going to get worse as widgets are added\

I find iOS 7 to be slow still (due to animations more than lag), so if 8 is any slower, I'm out for sure. Truthfully, I should have stayed on 6 though. I like the design of 7 more, but the speed difference is massive.

Interesting to see that many of the people recommending iOS 8 on the 4S are developers...

Thanks for this! The if the upgrade to iOS 8 is anything like 7, it might be wiser to just wait until I get a new phone.

I will wait with my 4S, but am just installing it on my iPad and iPhone 5s.
I am only using the 4S as my iPod now really, as the sound is much louder than the 5s.

I finished downloading iOS8 onto my iphone 4S 16GB about 45mins ago.

Seems to be running okay so far, a little sticky writing texts maybe, although the last one I wrote and sent was okay. I can't open Siri using voice commands (even if the phone is charging or not). Too early to tell about effects to battery life. I love the ability of being able to respond to texts without having to logout of whatever you were doing on the phone - worth the update just for that!!

I didn't bother with a clean install, I just checked for a software update and started the process. worked well, at least for me :D
