The Yerba Buena Center, the traditional venue for iPhone announcements, shows no events on September 10-12.
That fits perfectly with past announcements because they are never on the schedule and Apple usually needs 2-days to prepare the building.

Someone should call them and ask about availability on September 12. :p

I bet that Apple initially planned to release all of these products in October, not September. Apple management doesn't think that the company can afford to have another disappointing quarter like they had last quarter. By pushing these products out for the last week in September Apple has a good chance to win the quarter from Samsung.

I've never understood (read: bought into) this logic. Why would Apple arbitrarily choose a later date (October) and then suddenly just move I up b/c of competition, earnings, etc.?

If they could have it out sooner, ready for launch, with adequate inventory, I think they would. This is one of the biggest companies in the world, not a little girl's lemonade stand.

3GS: yes, because it's the third iPhone. iPhone 3G: no, it's not part of the 3-family because it's the second iPhone. iPhone 4S: no, I don't consider it part of the 4-family.

I am willing to bet you are in the minority as most people see the 3GS and 4S as just a branch of the 3G and 4 respectively. Obviously apple intended it to be this way or they would have given them a different numerical number

Agreed sigh. If they give it a number it will be 5. I don't get why so many can't figure that out. Most of the iPhone purchasers aren't Apple geeks and therefore would wonder where the missing iPhone 5 went. It really is simple. 3G > 3GS > 4 > 4S > 5.

That makes no sense. The iPhone 4 was called such because it was the 4th iPhone. Why would Apple call the 6th iPhone "iPhone 5"? If anything, I expect the naming to follow what the iPad started this year. "The New iPhone" is probably what they'll refer to it as.

Im calling bulls**t on this as:

1. Is there even any events scheduled in for september with apple. Surely they would be booked by now (even if marked as generic event)

Apple sends invites out a little over a week before scheduled events.

iPad Mini

I like the idea of an iPad mini, and may be pick up one for my family (possibly for my daughter) but at this point I don't think its happening.

We've had leaked iPhone "5" (6? LTE? Whatever) parts for a long, long time now (May, if I remember correctly). Have *any* parts leaked for the iPad mini besides supposed case designs or proto drawings? Anything? Like a dock connector, which seems to be the first part that typically gets leaked?

To the best of my memory, no. Now, iLounge is saying their "source" is saying November, since it "might not be ready" by the assumed event in September.

First it was late 2010; then fall 2011 (despite the emphasis of the "year" of iPad 2 by Apple); then it became fall 2012; now its Christmas 2012?

This is almost identical to last year: iPhone 4s parts continued to leak, but the assumed iPhone 5 was just "really well guarded" by Apple. Now, we have had the rumor of the iPhone 5 + iPad mini rumor for a while, yet only iPhone 5 parts have leaked with the only physical evidence for an iPad mini being presumptuous case manufacturers -- which was exactly the same for the assumed iPhone 5 last year.

I'll gladly eat crow if I'm wrong, but it ain't happening folks. And I'll start the rumor mill now, since we know its going to happen:

"Apple to release iPad 4th generation March 2013 with an iPad mini in the fall. Sources said that the iPad mini wasn't ready to be released along side its bigger brother in March, since Apple apparently had issues with screen size. My source is firm on the fall launch though."

And for good measure:

"Apple to release iPad mini in November 2013, since it apparently wasn't ready for production to be released along aside the iPhone LTEs in September. But my source is firm that it will be out for Christmas......"

...they have heard that the next generation iPhone, new iPod nano, and all new 7.85" iPad mini will be announced on September 12th. They also pinpoint the actual launch date for the next iPhone as September 21, 2012.The next-generation iPhone, which is frequently referred to as the "iPhone 5", is expected to have a taller 4" screen as shown in the above photo.

If that photo is real, that's a lame looking phone. Apple is falling further and further behind the competition. I guess we can count on more lawsuits from Apple to try and stave off competitors who are producing way superior phones.

A 7" tablet does not replace a 3.5" iPod though. Both I'd say are complimentary products, the iPod Touch still has a place in the line-up for people wanting the added portability with the versatility of apps and the iOS platform.

But since Apple has pretty much given up on the iPod Touch these last few iterations, seems that it is going away. With iPod sales being down quarter after quarter, I guess it makes sense.

I for one welcome rounding up 7.85 inch to 8 inch when speaking of the smaller iPad relative to 7 inch nominal tablets.

There is a substantial difference in comparison.

That's why I said "If" they give it a number. I bet you anything you like it will absolutely, totally not be called iPhone 6. It may well just be called the "New iPhone", or indeed iPhone 5, but it will not be called 6 - the only people who think it will are the nerdy types, this isn't an insult it's just true. Ask anyone who doesn't frequent Apple rumour sites what they think the next iPhone will be called... Apple's key consumer is not the Apple nerd but the general public, they won't want to cause confusion.

The iPhone 4 was called such because it followed the 3G and 3GS, the new design needed a new number and this was the next logical step.

And that difference makes it even less suitable as an iPod Touch replacement unfortunately, so I think they should stick with 7" if they're going to market it like they do laptops (with screen inch sizes) and as a replacement. ;)

I'd be willing to bet that this could very well be part of Apple's "doubling down" on secrecy. Apple know that everyone checks those calendars now, and even call to try to reserve or check on availability.

Time will tell I suppose.

The new-iPad will become the iPad3 when the "new new" iPad is released.

you don't call the Macbook Pro with numbers, same thing will be with the ipad, a perhaps the iphone aswell.
you simply buy after tech spec and price. it's kind a smart, who wants to buy a ipad2 when ipad3 is released? but if it's only down to the specs and one is 100€ cheaper, you don't feel as fooled hehe

most people just buy an "iphone" anyway, not knowing if it's a 4 or 4s as long as facebook works.. :p

nothing but a taller 4s

This design SUCKS. It is anything but radically new. I'm so sick of the 4 design, it is unquestionably time for something new. This is just Tim Cook and all the corporate business school ****-tards he's hired since Steve died milking profits. When you use the same design your manufacturing costs go WAY down, and that is why your seeing so much resemblance to the 4. There is no way this is the iPhone 5 Steve created before he died, he would never let this piece of **** see the light of day. If you're thinking "oh well I guess they don't really need to change the design" you are flat out lying to yourself. Since Tim Cook has taken office, not even one Apple product has seen a design change. This NEVER happened with Steve. Jonny Ive should have been made CEO, and Cook should have just stayed not the supply side, because this is the kind of **** that happens when the person in charge is focused solely on supply chain efficiency.

The 3G was named such because it was the first iPhone with 3G. It was the second iPhone. The 3GS was a refinement of the design. By your logic the iPhone 4 should have been the iPhone 3.

But I agree, it is confusing which is why Apple will be dropping the numbering scheme. After the "disappointment" of the 4S who can really blame them. At least we can agree that it won't be called the iPhone 6. I just think there is no chance it will be called the iPhone 5.

While I don't agree that it is Tim's fault, it has been a lame couple of years for design. One could argue the retina MBP is an overhaul... yes inside, but it is 75% the same as the previous model visually. I think part of this is aluminum overkill, but then again, what else could they use? But I see where you are coming from in a way because the design overhauls themselves have been lacking across the board.

To all the people bitching about how this design is just a longer 4/4S.. how so? Other than the front glass looking the same as it always has how is it similar to the 4/4S? I have a feeling some of you are going to feel like idiots when you actually hold one of these in your hand and compare it to the 4S. I do prefer the unibody design to the ice cream sandwich look of the 4/4S. Not saying I love the design, but to me it doesn't resemble the 4S except the fact it's a rectangle and the front glass is similar. There are certain design cues that are typical Apple like the bevel on the edges. If it was a curved bevel would you guys be bitching less?

I don't know.. but Apple is loosing its sexy-appeal to the competitors. Pretty much all of my friends (including the iPhone fans) like the SIII better. It's thin, has a nice screen, very powerful, etc. I don't blame them. The iPhone is not the "cool" thing anymore.

I said it before, but I hope this is not the iPhone 5 (or whatever they might call it).

Can't wait to get one. I love my iPhone 4, but I'm getting the two year "I need a new phone" feeling again. I will be pre-ordering ASAP.

I agree. My contract ends October 28 and I will wait for the 5. I will spend the extra money and buy the unlocked one though.

Very exciting news. I will be ordering 3 "New" iPhones (all 16GB AT&T upgrades) and an iPad mini just as soon as they start taking orders.

...and I wonder: We have seen leaked parts for the next iPhone (buttons, back shell, front glass, and battery) and we didn't see anything of the iPad Mini.

My thoughts exactly. Almost every new product that comes out we eventually see leaked parts. Haven't seen anything parts for the "iPad mini" so I doubt it's true.
