LTE?

That's why I'm excited to upgrade. I have an LTE hotspot right now and the speeds are just unbelievable.

(Now, I know there's a whole contingent of people who suggest that LTE is useless because of fixed data caps. That's absurd. Not all of us are looking for faster speeds because we need to stream movies or download absurdly large files. I do a lot of work on the road. The decreased latency and faster speeds of LTE make a huge difference in my productivity when I'm not in my office.)

if thats really the only new feature on the iPhone 5 its not gonna be much of a seller in the UK. Considering its gonna be quite sometime before we get a true 4G network. Ofcom and the mobile companies haven't even agreed on a frequency to use yet. Although I know the next iPhone is gonna get an A5X, more ram and maybe a 10-12MP Camera. Other than a new redesign and a few spec improvements I really cant think of that much more to be added to it. I'm fine with my 32gig 4S for the meantime.

This apparent "iPad mini" Is most likely an updated iPod Touch with more features.

A 7" tablet does not replace a 3.5" iPod though. Both I'd say are complimentary products, the iPod Touch still has a place in the line-up for people wanting the added portability with the versatility of apps and the iOS platform.

But since Apple has pretty much given up on the iPod Touch these last few iterations, seems that it is going away. With iPod sales being down quarter after quarter, I guess it makes sense.

Can't wait to get one. I love my iPhone 4, but I'm getting the two year "I need a new phone" feeling again. I will be pre-ordering ASAP.

Same here, past upgrade date too but just holding out. If it's just a longer screen I may have to go to the dark (Android) side. It's time for a bigger screen as things have moved on since the original design was made - we now all do email, web surfing, video watching and book reading from phones. Seems to me that 4.3" is the ideal balance of size vs usability, 4.8" getting too big, but aspect ratio should stay the same rather than just stretching for widescreen use.

I'm not saying it does replace an iPod touch. I'm saying I think the rumour is wrong and what they speak of is just an updated iPod touch spec bump. Reason being it would potentially hurt sales of the retina iPad if they released a full blown 7'' iPad tablet, this is my prediction anyway in that we'll just see an iPod Touch with an A5X, 1GB RAM & better camera etc.

Awesome... my iPhone 4 is running out of steam (battery, that is)

Battery replacement in iphone 4 is the easiest thing which you can do by yourself. Follow steps on iFixit.com and it will take you 5 min to do it all. Battery cost peanuts and high capacity one of 2450mAh as oppose to standard 1420mAh will make your iphone more attractive for buyers, with much longer battery life.;)

The press material mentionning "the new" still doesn't make it part of the model name. On Apple's site, their boxes, it's just plain iPad. And that is also "press material" if you ask me..

No one said it was part of the model name!

Like the new "MacBook Air". We all know "the new" didn't belong in the quotes though :

the new MacBook Air press material

Anyway, do what you like, it's your site.

Apple definitely used the "the new" term too much with the latest iPad. By trying to simplify to naming scheme, they simply made it more confusing.

When the admin of an Apple-focused website and an old member can't agree on basic stuff like this, there must be a problem somewhere. :p

There's no disagreement. KnightWRX is simply arguing something that I never claimed.

The placement of the quotes hint to it IMO, hence my "edit" to replace them properly around iPad and iPhone only. Again, your site, do what you like.

read the full sentence.

in other words, quotes don't mean "model number", they mean "this is exactly what they wrote".

I believe it. I think Apple—all things being equal—want to release their products in the last few weeks of each financial quarter e.g. late September.

Two Thoughts:

(1) Tim Cook recently said "Apple is doubling-down on privacy." It would be quite funny to learn that this is a controlled leak of misinformation. In a way, I hope it is.

I agree with you, but one thing I'm thinking of is that while Apple of course has the right to identify leakers all they want (and they have done it before, with Asteroid), Apple's a much bigger company now than the last time. They're no longer an also-ran in the field and their rumors move markets. They probably don't want rumors out there at all, even "useful" ones that identify leakers.

Who knows what would happen if a super-cool rumor turned out to be a canary trap?

Just hurry up already! It's been a month since I bought new tech and I'm getting hives! Give me my taller iPhone! GIVE IT TO ME!

In what way have they given up on the iPod touch?

Keep in mind the Touch has always been somewhat crippled (Compared to the iPhone) by Apple since it's introduction. The first generation was really feature rich, however they left out a Mic, or a way to connect one. Subsequent updates had last generation iPhone features slowly creep into the product, with even the Retna model having a lower quality display than the iPhone 4.

Any chance at a 4S XL instead of a 5?

Also, I am not a huge fan of this form factor. I hope they create next gen hardware with current gen screen size. I don't want two things that big floating around in my pants! ;)

Agreed, and I see this as completely plausible.

(2) Regardless of whether this is true, this is going to decimate iPhone sales and some iPad sales for the next month and a half.

I agree and disagree. I dont know how many registered users this site, and ones like it have, but I'm guessing it's a VERY slim faction of iPhone owners, so while "many" on here (like myself) are waiting, I'd bet that a vast majority either don't know or don't care. That being said, Apple's latest financial results would indicate that there had been some declining sales in the past quarter.

Oh well, who knows?!?! :)

Timing is the issue

I bet that Apple initially planned to release all of these products in October, not September. Apple management doesn't think that the company can afford to have another disappointing quarter like they had last quarter. By pushing these products out for the last week in September Apple has a good chance to win the quarter from Samsung.

Im calling bulls**t on this as:

1. Is there even any events scheduled in for september with apple. Surely they would be booked by now (even if marked as generic event)

The Yerba Buena Center, the traditional venue for iPhone announcements, shows no events on September 10-12.
That fits perfectly with past announcements because they are never on the schedule and Apple usually needs 2-days to prepare the building.

Sure, there is a market for a smaller tablet, but I'm just not sure if that is really gonna happen. My guess would be that they replace the iPod touch with it. There is no real need for both. I mean, with the next iPhone, the iPhone 4 will take the place of the iPhone 3GS and without contract, it is $375, and the iPod Touch starts at $199. The difference in price is actually mostly win margin. Now, if Apple comes with a smaller iPad, it will eat from the iPod Touch and iPad market. I realy wonder if the iPod Touch would survive that in sales numbers.

Yup. Also, IMHO, the Touch was/is seen by Apple as an important stepping stone and part of the iPhone product umbrella. I know many parents who don't want to get their kids iPhones, so the Touch is a great solution. The benefit, of course, for Apple is that those kids then, naturally, will want to upgrade to a phone (and one which they are familiar with and can keep all of their apps).

Apple is stepping up security...

...and I wonder: We have seen leaked parts for the next iPhone (buttons, back shell, front glass, and battery) and we didn't see anything of the iPad Mini. I wonder if that is just a deliberately spread rumor from apple to hurt the small form factor tablet sales like Kindle, Galaxy 7.1, and Nook. There is a reason Microsoft is going even bigger with over 10 inches. Apple does not seem to be the company with wide product diversification.
